Front Spoilers

i was "Driving Swiftly" down a lane cause we were in a hurry. and i saw something that scared me, i hit the brakes but it was too late. a huge drop infront of my sent the skyline on an angle and the awful sound of a grinding front spoiler made my teeth shatter.

i have owned the car for 2 weeks and have now scraped it. there is no real damage, just some scratches on the underside. but it made me think and i put the question to people who have to deal with the same kind of problem.

how do you deal with such a low bumper, and how durable are they :S

can they take the occasional knock?

depends if you got a cheap knock off fibreglass one or a top quality original that has flex in the bar...

Better quality bumber gives you more wriggle room for avoiding damage

it also depends on how many times it has already been repaired too. body filler will just chip away even with the slightest touch. you can also buy the flexable bumpers, i seen them in a magazine, mind you they would be pricey. bumpers have a limited flexability as paint has near none. in many cases the bumper will flex and the paint in that area will tend to come away over time...

before you know it you'll be dodging potholes without even thinking...

and esp on your usual routes u'll know where they are.. i always stay out of the lane if i know tehres a bump coming up

my fiberglass one has had a few hits.. the ripple strip sideways at 80kmh on a drift day really killed it though.... meh

my original bumper has taken a fair few bumps,grinds, and hits and im surprised its still holding up pretty well. if it was an aftermarket fiberglass one it would have died ages ago.

Mines scratched slighjtly underneath, Skylines seem to have a bad turning circles (like many other Jap cars) as opposed to bigger commodores.

The best advice i can give you is "take your time when turning, doing u turns, going over bumps etc...

About 100m behind me usually in the next lane.

as far as bumper flexability goes you can get a flexible primer (undercoat) to help prevent fractures in the paint...

Thats what I did although its better for stone chips than anything else...... I am having the car completely resprayed and at the same time they are making me a mould of my front bar and making an extra two (current one has been repaired too many times previously - previous owner + 1 is mine). This way both the other bars will be ready and waiting - they are also giving me the mould to keep so I don't see every other 33 in the area with the same bar

The cost of the two new bars + the mould is $650. Pretty cheap considering the cost of replacing/repairing and I can use it on any future skylines or sell the mould to a friend with the same bar
