this is one of the dumbest things ive read all day!!!i am a mechanic and i work at a reputable business in melbourne and if i fitted pads in a customers car and they sqeeled they complain.street pads wont sqeel unless theyre in wrong.instead of fitting your pads at home dont be so tight and get it done at a MECHANICS!!!!!then this wont happen..also some race pads sqeel but im talking about REAL race pads for track only.and thats usually only using cross drilled(crap)rotors.

It's good to hear there's workshops around that offer good service. Maybe you can help oblivo out with his predicament. Poor guy has gone through a lot without any avail to his problem. Please refer to quote below.

I think someone needs to start a sticky on this issue considering both the amount of threads and misinformation out there.

I had this intense squealing problem after swapping to DBA 4000 rotors and Endless pads. In trying to retify the problem, I've been to three workshops, swapped in and out five sets of pads (including Ferodo and Bendix Ultimate, Advance and Heavy Duty) had the rotors machined twice and on and off the car countless times, even tried the above combinations with standard rotors. I had the calipers rebuilt at considerable expense, tried a variety of shims, goos and compounds trying to get them to shut up.

Currently, I'm back to standard pads with the DBA 4000s with custom shims, and the squeal is still there on occassion but bearable. My pedal feel, and general braking power, however, is poor.

its people like you and theyre thoughts of knowing it all that are ruining these forums.just live with the fact that your not a mechanic and instead of looking on the internet for ansmers you should take it to a mechanic and PAY!!! some one to fix it just saying there are qua;ified people out ther to do jobs you obviously cant....but hey good luck to u and ill c you in the funny pages

I was serious about helping oblivo. Having a mechanics input on a this topic is very much welcomed. And yes your right I'm not a mechanic, and when issues arise that are out of my capabilities I do take my car to a mechanic. It's good too see a mechanic on here to share his thoughts as most of us are not mechanics and do not always know better including me. I look forward to seeing more of your posts that can help others.

People come to the forums to learn about their cars and a lot them are do it yourselfers. They like to know what is in their ability to get things fixed/modified/improved with their own hands, and if necessary taking it to a mechanic.

Like KeyMaker said, if someone is up to the challange of trying to help me out, I'm more than up for it. The three workshops that I have tried are all well respected here in Sydney. They are qualified mechanics and I was there every time throughout the entire fitting and bedding-in process, so nothing dodgy was going on. I don't think there is anything in this thread I have not tried, including the Nissan shim kit and copper grease.

Also, there is squeal and then there is 'squeal'. The orignal noise that came from the Enless/Ultimate DBA 4000 combo truly made the car undrivable. I was pulled up for it, abused by other drivers - you could hear it for a kilometre away.

I can live with the standard pads and a slight bit of squeal now, but what's the point if my braking capacity is reduced?

wat discs do you have again?are they cross drilled?cross drilled rotors used to cause this problem every now and then they also used to crack thats y they dont make them anymore.now they use dimpled much better

So what causes brakes to squeel? To my understanding, one of the factors was dust getting in between the shim and the piston or something or is this not true?

The ultimates are a very dusty pad. I'm running project mu's on the front, with ultimates on the rear, with white wheels. And the rears are blacker than the fronts :thumbsup:

thanks to everyone for there help. I figured out that i was missing shims. Geez it took n arm n a leg to source some cheaply, given that i got quoted $120 from nissan. ive put them in with some anti squeal paste and what do you know, the squal is gone, for now, n hopefully forever

Interesting... I thought there would be a longer, more definitive thread on this topic. I've seen plenty of skylines squealing while braking, and thought I was pretty lucky to have a very mild noise very rarely. I had DBA gold slotted and drilled rotors, and apparently some really really screwed bendix ultimates. That's how I bought the car two years ago anyway.

So i've just had all my discs machined, and new EBC green pads put in. Costs a fortune (to me), but it brakes even better than the ultimates. (and I used to use them in my last car... v8 berlina) So i've had ultimates a fair few times before.

My mechanic didn't want to give me my car back because while he was bedding them in, they developed the most horridly loud squeal. Suffice to say I was made to bring it back the next day. Apparently there are some little shims that clip onto a sliding pin? He susses those out, and decided that my shims that sit behind the pads were rooted. They got changed, and now the front is quiet.... all the time. But the REARS... oh my god! I think I could permanently deafen 20+ people waiting at a bus-stop if I really wanted to. With the windows up, it's unbearable. =-[

So he's already cleaned the discs, calipers, pads, shims etc etc etc before the problem even came about, and he pretty much refuses to use any kind of brake goo. It's going back to him on Friday, and he's talking about "linishing"(sp?) the rear pads?

Well in any case, my mechanic is great. (before anyone says otherwise) I'm not just saying this, it's just true. But the point of this update is for other "squealers" (that's what i'm calling you guys with squealing brakes) Hopefully i'll have it sorted on Friday, and I can add another solution to this thread. I might even take a little phone-cam footage of the noise.

99% of squeal is cause by vibration between the backing plate and the calliper itself... nothing to do with the friction material or rotor face. Old trick, get some permatex and spread a small amount over your backing plate! :D

Just wanted to add I changed out the old factory pads on the car today, put in Bendix Ultimates and the squealing is goooone!

Old pads were pretty glazed, took them out, cleaned all the shims thoroughly, put anti-squeal goop between the pad and first shim, and second shim and pistons. All good now :)

Update: So my squeal has come back loud and proud. =-[

My mechanic still refuses to smear any kind of compound on the shims and wants to have another look soon.

Interestingly... someone mentioned that the standard kit comes with some silver grease or whatever... and went on to talk about vented shims and solid shims etc. I'm pretty keen to see if I have all the required parts, and found this image:
