hey guys

a mate of mine has a 94 skyline. has stock everything bar its has a cat back zorst, pod and a hi/low boost controller runnng 7/10psi.

the issue we have is that the car doesnt seem to run right on either boost setting and at the same time has a miss down low around 3000rpm, then nothing from then on in. he's taking it to 3 or 4 different tuners who say the car is fine but i went for a spin and the car felt crap. its sluggish at best down low till it builds full boost, then kicks in like a mule. fuel economy is ok at 450km to a tank, dont know if that makes any difference??

the issues we are having are:

is this a stock computer? or does it look like its been re-mapped? arrived as is from jap with the car.

and other issue with the miss? plugs are at .8, and tried different afm, and considering its running standard side mount with no mods other than metioned im stumped as to what this problem could be. we are planning on taking it down to Ray @ RE Customs but thought some self diagnosis is an option b4 we go and outlay $$ that might be just to solve a minor issue.

help me out. any other suggestions would be considered and tried

cheers

daniel

looks like its a remapped ecu to me.. nissan markings with k sports or whatever rom sticker...

if so, it has likely been tuned properly for 100ron petrol, but should be alright on 98 as it likely still has the stock ecu's engine protection systems if it starts to ping. you could always back the timing off a tad at the cas, but probably wont have to. because your ecu is an unknown, you may want to get it on a dyno to check the a/f ratios on both full throttle and regular cruise points to make sure all is in order.

the smaller the plug gap, the higher the chance of running like crap at low revs. thats why it is a compromise. In your situation you may find it is in the fuel map tho. try and find like i said some dyno time, or see if anyone with a wideband will help you out for a bit on the road.

if we put standard plugs in with 1.1 gap, we still have the same issue. if your correct in saying that the ecu has been re-mapped, would it be ok i guess to put a stock ecu in and that should eliminate the problem yeh?

also if we take it to get dynoed, would it be worth while gettin say a SAFC2 installed at the same time to assist in tuning or are u able to re-mp the stock ecu again?

With a K Sport sticker on there. I would be investigating the ECU, it would generally be modified when the ECU has been labelled by a company.

I mean, why would you put a sticker on something you cant see? ;)

Open it up and get some shots and maybe the chipping is obvious.

Or it could be a one-time burn. In which case probably better of sourcing a stock ECU.

no dramas. i will investigate a bit more for you guys to see. ill get my mate to bring the car round on the weekend and ill open up the ecu.in the mean time ill hunt down a stock ecu and see if it makes any difference. once i get some more pics might be able to help out.

apparently guys "ks rom" is a large company in japan that produces "drifting" computers, they re-map the standard ecu so as it produces more torque. car must have had more mods when over there obviously so without the same mods comp doesnt know what it is doing.

will prob look at a SAFC2 and tune to resolve the issue, or SAFC2 and new stock ecu with a tune.

will get more info on these and post as it comes to hand.

you are right in thinking that your ecu is probably not tuned for a stockish car, whatever it had in japan, plus the different fuel in australia, is likely causing the problem. even an atmo bov on the previous tune could cause these sorts of issues at low revs. either way your timing and fuel is out and you should look for a solution, it will likely give better fuel economy too.

safc is over rated, it is not the easiest to tune well but you can get a decent result. if you can find a power fc use that. if you are planning a turbo upgrade i would look for a full computer as matt said, otherwise a stocker will be fine with a stock turbo and whatever mods you chuck at it, still making reasonable power safely.

you should be able to get a stock ecu for <$100 or free. find someone with a halfcut. if you are planning a turbo upgrade i would look for a full computer as matt said, otherwise a stocker will be fine with a stock turbo and whatever mods you chuck at it

mates not looking for an upgrade at all. at best he just wants the car to have full zorst, fmic, pod and raise the boost to 10psi all the time. i have SAFC2 in my 33 andwith stock 7psi boost im making 178rwkw.

and yes we have checked the car all over. everything is fine. checked all the bushes, springs, cv joint, rails the works, for any twists bends and the otherwise.

thanks for your help guys.
