Hey Nick are they Benos custom Tein RE's?

I'm actually not sure if he played with them Jason... I suspect not... we both agreed there is too much rear spring in the car, the back end jumps around over some of the bigger bumps... but that's what you get with 10kg/mm springs front and rear... they are fairly old and could do to be pulled out and possibly rebuilt so I will get him to work his magic on them one day...

Nice Zed... must be fast, its red! :/

I remember reading thaty the short wheelbase Z was quite twitchy, do you find that's the case? Or have you not driven it yet?

Its a weight distribution issue.

2+2 is 48/52

2 seater is 45/55.

A street car on the track could be a handfull. I know last time I went to Winton in my street car. I pulled the stereo equipment out of the back. Big mistake. It was a handfull, but very easy to drift around corners. :D

As I said before, if you can get the weight distribution right it shouldnt be any worse than the 2+2. In fact it ishould be way more nimble.

So take as much weight as possible out the front and between the axels and move as much as possible behind the rear axel. Problem solved and a lighter car. IMO 50/50 is obtainable.

yeah I like 2 seaters better as well. Looks better balanced and more like a 240z style car instead of a BOAT like a 2+2.

It doesn't need to be perfectly balanced to handle. You can use any number of tricks to fix it. Most people find if they can run more rubber at the rear then the car is balanced better & is quicker with more weight in the rear. Weight distribution being roughly proportional to tyre width ie not 50 -50.

Here is a photo of my bucket o' lard to illustrate the point: :D

Agreed, Street car has 265/35/18's rear and 235/40/18 front. Is very twichy ride without weight in the back. Dont think the variable rate Eibach/AGX suspension helped it much on the track.

Track car has Hoosier slicks 245/40/18's front and rear. Will be interesting when its done see what its like. Suspension is expensive Proflex monotube coil overs with whiteline sway bars.

BTW your R32 looks pretty FAT with that rubber ;)

Thanks Steve-o funny you should say that it is bens old motor he gave it a good freshen up for me when i got it from him. We had a good talk about what we wanted from the motor and its all about the response so we bind the GT45 and went for the T04Z and a stock plenum we will still be looking at about 470rwkw when its finished.

  • 3 weeks later...

not really, should get the car back around Targa. Depends if the cage builder's Targa car needs time. The engine is at peices at the engine builder, we'll probably be asking them to start putting it back together soon, so we can drop it in the car when it's back with a cage

okay posting for phunky_monkey... please note I did not build it and haven't gotten it to the track yet but hey, what else am I going to do on a Friday

Previously owned by Nathan from the SAU Vic club

'96 R33 GTR, built by Ben @ Racepace many moons ago so is a bit old school

Built motor with Tomei gear, pistons, big cams, springs, lifters etc etc... with Benno custom sump and catch can etc

Trust T517Z 8cm turbos

Trust FMIC, Radiator and Oil Cooler etc

Tein Type-RE Coilovers etc

Harrop 4-pot Calipers, 355mm 2-piece Rotors

BBS LM Forged Alloy 18x10.0 +20

and a bunch of other supporting parts... makes 360rwkw @ 20psi

Is pretty loud and lumpy and generally not as refined as recent Racepace GTRs but I love it... it has personality :D

and it gets me to work really quickly lol :P

soon to be at a track day near you :P

Excuse the filth, had been driving in the rain before this...

Awesome gtr, what a package!!

I would give my left nut to own one of these!

unfortunately I don't take nuts as payment lol

I love your FC too dude! very nicely put together... maybe we need to give each other a ride sometime:)... actually that sounded kinda gay but you know what I meant lol

another pic for no good reason

i thought i should formally introduce myself as i just jump in and out of SAU topics all the time.

This is my car i have built up over the past 18 months and counting. best thing about it is i have been racing/using it while building it.

late 08 i took delivery of a stock r32gts with a RB25DE

DSC04535.jpg

i transfered all the stuff i salvaged off my old burnt out shell.

main stuff from this was a RB25det Gear box custom tail shaft and auto diff. also a lot of suspension bits. sway bars and adjustable arms

then i sat and pondered what to do with the engine. sell it and get some thing else or turbo it?

after consulting a few people who had had good outcomes with RB25de+t i decided to bolt one up.

i sourced a r33 turbo manifold, i had a stainless split dump pipe, and i robbed a spare Rb20 for the oil and water lines. A r34 neo turbo fell into my lab by chance and i got another cheap R32GTR inter cooler and cheap IC piping kit (just done the same thing to my old car)

DSC04832.jpg

during the engine freshen up i got a Sparco seat recaro bolt in rail and a brand new harness ready to hit the track.

while all this was being done to the car i was trying to sort out the best possible way to go with the ECU while maintain a modest budget.

the best option turned out to be the good old Apexi Power FC for a RB26dett. i sourced the wiring diagrams to modify the PFC to run on my engine and also picked up some GTR injectors and an MR30 resistor pack.

i got the car running and out on the track for a practice day one week before the first round of the 08 Drift Australia round in Tasmania. the only fault with the car was blowing IC pipes off at only 10psi

DSC04834.jpg

I made it the following weekend to Drift Australia to compete in super drift where i qualified 9th and finished 11th in my first ever competitive outing.

the next outing was round 1 of the Tas Drift series where i had zero dramas with the car all day and finished 6th.

DSC05036.jpg

like most budget builds what ever i can do my self gets done so amongst all my horse trading i ended up with a Z tune style bonnet vent and after may hours my best mate and i made it look like it was meant to be. in the process i cut the front off and fitted a Nismo splitter to cover up the cutting job.

this bonnet while not being much lighter than stock has never seen engine bay temps higher than 95deg even club daying during summer.

between the next few rounds i got the car dynoed as it had only been ruff tuned by a mate up until now. the dyno netted 194rwkw on 10psi but was backed off due to a slipping clutch.

new clutch in and a few more events achieved but nothing real major was done to the car just the usual maintenance.

i ended up finishing 4th in that Tassy Drift series for 08.

Callum221.jpg

round 5^^^

then i thought id take a few months off and this happened

DSC05285.jpg

and i made a new cluster

DSC05326.jpg

and a switch pannel

then i took it stripped down to a club day with some new 17" rims sporting dunlop semi's

DSC05395.jpg

i like to build things so i built a CAI and air box

DSC05321.jpg

DSC05319.jpg

after 12 months of drifting the front end was a mess so i got some GTR guards and a GTR bar and a Vail side front lip which has now been repaired 3 times.

DSC00296.jpg

brand new coil overs were the only thing the car really needed so i got some of the new Pedders ones

DSC00284.jpg

and then i also re-trimmed my dash in seuwed to stop reflection off the dash.

DSC00287.jpg

i was asked to do the drift demos at power cruise in tassy so the car was rushed back together once again and i made the most of it.

powercruise.jpg

After round 1 of the 09 Tassy drift series i decided that it was time to take a more serious approach and get a roll cage so i can move up maybe to circuit racing

DSC00883.jpg

a Bond Roll Bars weld in kit was ordered and has been my latest project for the car.

DSC00760.jpg

it has taken me a fair bit of time as i do all bar the final welding myself but i am pretty happy with the end result which is 2 bars off being finished

DSC01226.jpg

while the cage has been going in to keep myself sane i have upgraded the front brakes to R34 GTT calipers and rotors.

DSC01215.jpg

only one slight mod was needed to fit these and i am keen to see how hey perform over the stock r32 things. tech note that they are 30mm bigger diamiter rotors.

sorry if this has been a bit long but hopefully some people take some ideas from the stuff i have made and done.

thanks for reading Damien

Wow!

Damien - that is an awesome write up and build mate!!!

Done a bloody good job!

The air/headlight intake is pretty sweet!

Oh, and the dash is cool set up!!

Again - awesome work!!

What sort of circuit work you going to get into?
