yeh, those mount definately will not work, they are different heights. look like R32 GTR mounts. yours are the same as z32 300zx, same family, whales and boats. ha ha. We will get some new standard ones ordered 2moro, and get this external oil pump bracket sorted, then you can continue to bolt all your toys on.

You should know whether they will work by looking at them. You were the last one to see them alive, Stu. :D

Spent a day in the workshop at Bezerkly today finishing up the oil pump mounting bracket (which had to be modified to accommodate the power steering bracket and pump) and fitting up the intake and exhaust side of the motor. I've posted some pics so you can see what we started with and how it ended up.

This is what we started with this morning. The bracket had been made for the oil pump but it used the power steering pump holes instead of those once taken up by the air con pump.

Then things got a little more interesting. We started unpacking boxes of goodies that the car fairy had deposited at Bezerkly earlier on in the week. These goodies included the intake and exhaust sides of the motor.

Tomorrow morning the car is leaving my shed and heading into the workshop on a tilt-tray to emerge soon as a running concern.

Starting to get really exciting now!

you look to have explained it very well, besides everyone can see how good my work is. besides this thread is more interesting than mine at the moment. lots of bling to be seen. at least you know you can always enter the car in autosalon if it is to slow. ha ha ricer...

You shouldn't post after more than one beer. New rule. :thumbsup:

soon is the emphasized word, unfortunately adrian is learning the hard way as we all do that when you modify, you can expect teathing problems. When you modify to the extent that adrian has, the more problems to rectify. some due to poor workmanship of parts supplied, others down to poor or miss-communication, and somethings you just cant forsee, oh the joys.

After repositioning the external oil pump bracket, which was much less painless than expected, we continued the fit-up. next was the plenum. Looks pretty enough but was quite envolved in fitting. It was found that the studs supplied bottomed out before they were flush with the base, which meant the gasket had no crush and would not seal. had to remove all studs, countersink holes in plenum, clean threads then re-install studs.

Plenum was now fitted. all was good until it was found that the vacuum port thread for the brake booster was welded over. had to mask plenum up, die-grind weld back, re-tap thread and machine fitting down.

Just when we thought it was all good we found that the throttle cable bracket did not have enough clearance for the cable retaining bolts. So out came the die grinder again. This was a mission for us in a workshop with all the tools necessary. Hate to have been attempting this at home in the garage.

Next was the turbo water feed plumbing. The factory pickup point was unfortunately overlooked when the block was grouted so had to find an alternative point. ended up using the port behind the thermostat housing and eliminating the bleeder port and throttle body plumbing.

next was the oil pump/sump plumbing. Just before fitting the engine it was noticed that the position of the sump pickup fitting was in a position where it would not clear the engine crossmember. Could have been worse i guess, could have fitted the engine and then noticed. The sump will have to come back off and the fitting moved.

Hopefully after all these issues are rectified it will be smooth sailing for Adrian and his project. But lessons have been learned all round. sometimes too many cooks spoil the broth, but it will all be well worth it in the end. The worst part is these setbacks which require rectifying are time consuming and therefore expensive to resolve. An unwelcome additional cost seeing you have already payed good money for the item or service provided. This is not even a case of you get what you pay for as sometimes you pay good money and it still the product or service falls short due to poor communication or workmanship.

At the end of the day communication is the key, when you are getting something fabricated or supplied, get some advise from whoever is fitting it as they may have encounted issues with products previously and can help to avoid these issues. but on some occasions you just have to suck it and see.

After the sump is modified the engine will be fitted and it should be smooth sailing.

Adrian would have much loved to race his new baby this weekend but as you can see its not going to happen. He will be racing however in a borrowed car, wish him luck for the meeting and his project.

If more people knew the grief involved before they started there would by way less modified cars out there. Its been almost 12 months of modifing the modifications, hacking, cutting changing, discarding, reaarranging components to get it all to work as a unit. I thought I did my homework but there are so many hidden perils just waiting to bite you on the arse.

The next person that tries to sell me a part and insists it simply "bolts straight on" will have said part rammed up their coit.

seriously, yor quite welcome to come to the shop and have a go, but they are the same mount that came out of my 32gtst, 33 mounts are round. they will not fit without modification and even then, what makes them any better than the standard mount that lasted 12 years before failing.

good post stuart - people incorrectly expect these things to just bolt up and off you go. as you said it is hard enough in a workshop let alone the garage at home.

one poorly made set of gtr dumps we had were on and off 4 times for modification - before we finally found out that they were not going to clear the gearbox bellhousing. bad words were said that day.

Too bad about the Plazmaman plenum Stuart, I made a thicker gasket for my plenum (I think it mentioned that in the instructions that came with it?)

Looks like the build is going on very nicely though.

Keep up the good work and look fwd to see how it goes on the black stuff. :D

    • Yeah, my moulds and seals are 32 years old now. I think I will continue to not use a pressure washer on it.
    • I hear the old "I'd never use a pressure washer on my motorbike" BS in the dirtbike community too.  The only people that have had a problem from using a pressure washer on anything are the people that aren't using them properly.  If you hold the wand any more than 45 cms away from pretty much anything (radiators, wiring connectors, paint, etc) you aren't going to cause any damage.  We've had detailers wreck moulds and seals on cars at work before and the only reason why is they held the pressure washer too close and on the one spot for too long.  If you have 5% more brain power than a detailer then you know not to not do that and you'll never have a problem.
    • I'm pretty much healed up post surgery so I spent another almost full day out in the shed re-arranging everything to make room for all of the shit that I've taken off the car.  I need to get everything off the floor and away from the car for when I start making a massive mess stripping off the remaining body deadener and then for the the painting process.  Almost got the shed to a point now where I feel I can actually start working on the car again (clean shed clean mind or something!).  Almost 11 years of accumulated car parts, building supplies, tools, junk, etc have taken a long time to get in some sort of order again!  Most stuff is now boxed up and in the back shed if it's not car related.  Most people would still be horrified walking into my shed but it's significantly better than it was before!   For those that saw my separate post the other day, yeah I ordered one.... This version- I convinced myself to stop being a clown, wake up to yourself and realise it will take you 5 weeks to make one by which stage you're over working on the car again...  Maybe I am getting on top of my "mental ailments" and making smarter choices.... $1450 delivered which will take my miserable half-dutch arse a few days to get over having spent that much!  If I don't have a use for it straight away after my car is off it I might even see if there is a "rental market" for them.  See if anyone wants to hire it for a period of time.  $25 a week or something like that.  I'll worry about that when my car is actually ready to come off it though as that might be a while away!! There's now no excuses now for not ending up with an underside you could eat off! Away for kids sport the next few weekends so hopefully can get the rotisserie assembled ready to go for the car to go straight on it the next available weekend.    
    • I always use my Karcher, but it's only a little one that I picked up from Supercheap  The only issue I ever had with a pressure washer was when I was a kid cleaning coaches, they had a hi-po industrial sized petrol jobbie that would strip paint if you got to close I saying this, we have a fairly high power washer at work with a diesel powered heater that sprays water at about 60°c, it works great for removing old wax and road grime on the underbody after some foam cannon action, albeit from a "stand off" distance of a few feet
    • Sorry no - The sandtrap adventure ended the day, happened at the end of the last session. At that time I wasn't hearing any weird noises nor were the brakes shuddering anymore. It was only when watching the videos that I remembered I had these sounds early on!
