Front Tie Rod Ends

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone can help me out. My car is off the road for a while, so i was thinking of replacing the front tie rod ends on my R32 gtst. The rubber has perished and the grease is now gone.

Nissan can supply them for $125 each which, while not the end of the world, was a bit more than i expected. My question is: Does anyone know where i can get some aftermarket tie rod ends that are cheaper than Nissan?

Also, is it possible just to replace the rubber boot around the ball joint and fill it with grease? Im not sure that the joints themselves are worn out; just the boot has perished.

Pedders do them.

I picked up a pair for a little over $20 each. I believe rrp is ~30 each.

Consider getting a set of universal rack boots ~$8 each and replacing those while you are there.

Thanks for that! I thought $125 was a bit too much to pay.

Just to be sure; tie rod ends are the ball joints that connect the ends of the steering rack to the wheel assembly arent they? Theyve got the pillow type rubber boot thats filled with grease.

Yes, that right.

repco part number rrb033 for rack boots that fit straight up with no trimming if you decide to do those too.

Come to think of it I didn't use universals.

I took measurements and then in the book they turned out to be the same as the R31 steer rack boots.

So thats what I got for $8 each from Motormates.

pedders told me the have 3 types for the front. only differance between them is the threading or somthing like that. but the quoted me $160 for the front tie rods installed.

thats $70 for both front ends and $90 for labour+wheel allignment.

that i thought was very reasonable and will be getting mine done by them next week.

the only thing suz is theres nothing there for rears. or there is but they are having a hard time finding them coz i need my rear ones changed to as the boot in them are split to.

Rears are a genuine item.

I have just returned from Nissan dealership with OEM tie rod ends in hand. $138 each.

I purchased Pedders units in January this year for the forementioned $35 each..... 6 months later and they are stuffed.

The OEM nissan items are much larger and better built.

In the long run, I wish I had got OEM in the first place.

This is regarding a 1998 stagea, which is 4wd and quite heavy compared to my r32gtst (Pedders tie rod ends are still doing fine so far)
