Probably silly question, but ever since getting car R32 GTSt, 1992, Front suspension bottoms out VERY easily ( does'nt need a pothole), almost any reasonable irregularity in road surface will do. Car handles well, seems standard specs. Is this really normal?? Had car 3 or 4 or more years. Always been same.

is the spring rate correct? if you push down on the front guards ( just near the front wheel ) can you push it down fairly easily? or is it pretty firm ?

are you sure there is not a plastic guard hanging down further than the rest of the front bar?

Or are you using lowered springs with stock shocks? That'll do it as well..

james.

I always thought it was standard, but maybe not. I had a look under it to-day, and in theory there's plenty of suspension movement. Nothing to limit it, that I can see, but in fact it doesent move much before it bottoms out ( hard !! ). I came to conclusion it had to be limiting in the Shocks, somehow. Suspension not too soft, quite firm, so I think have to come down to mis-matched Shocks. Does anyone know where to measure the ride height, and what it is standard factory setting?..'92 GTSt. ?

I know it's off topic but reading the title of this thread didn't give me any hint that you were talking about cars. :D

Maybe the shocks are just shagged - take it to a suspension specialist and get it sussed out.

same as above i thought you was sagesting some poron action.

anyway my r32 does this bad ever since instaling aftermarket springs on my standard shocks. i new this would happen but didnt realy mind to much. i finaly got around to getting it checked out by a suspension workshop and they saud the front shocks were shagged, the bump stops also needed replacing.

i am anly now 9months down the track getting some new front shocks to fix the proble. i will be happy if it does. i think if you check out sydney kids group buy on suspension you will find that he reccomends cutting the bump stops depending on ride height but dont do this with the standard stuff.

NOW I really don't know what's the problem. Just had wheel off to have a good look. Could'nt find any bump stops from underneath car. Good reason I could'nt find them - There are none!!. Can't see any place where any such thing could be fitted, either. Don't understand what locates bottom of coils around shocks ( Bilstiens ), theres a plate there which just seems to "be there" around shock body. Can't see what keeps it there. About 100mm available movement on shock absorber, which would translate to about 170 / 180mm at centre of tyre. More than enough. Any more and tyre would touch inner guards. Only moves a FRACTION of that before it bottoms out on something. I really don't get it. What am I missing???

same as above i thought you was sagesting some poron action.

'mazing !!! Thought it was suggesting some porn action. Maybe later, when I've got over this problem. Does anyone know how to change name of thread, so more ppl look at it? If so, do it!! But is anyone sure that suspension probs will get more attention than porn ?????

bump stops are on the shaft of the shock. inside the coil.

Ta,

Looked there. That's where I have around 100mm available vertical movement, which should give plenty movement at tyre. I'll keep looking. There is an explanation for everything. There is no magic.

yeah I too thought it was a " show us your front bottoms " type of thread.. but I tried to be helpfull all the same haha..

hey.. another thing you COULD do .. but its frought with possibilities to hurt yourself haah.

jack the car up and get it up on stands.

then get a trolley jack and see if you can stick it under the tyre or under the suspension arm to emulate the shock traveling over a bump.

Please dont miss my disclaimer about a strong possibility of self harm, or get a mate to do it and sit back with a few beers and enjoy the hilarity!

    • The German place in Cabramatta was rock solid, fresh pretzel cooked to order back then. Then it went all quiet, after all the poker machines were removed, then I believe it closed for good. I did drive past the other week and noticed outdoor lighting a big screen, but no idea what is there now.
    • Yeah I suspect even if you hold airmass per cycle/cylinder constant if you get too far away from stock you're still going to have problems running the factory tune within the bounds of the factory load scale. Cams, different displacement/rod ratio, etc. I'm just lucky that the GTIII-SS with wastegate boost + CA compliance cats is pretty much equivalent to stock turbos. When I have actual space I can finally get it tuned and modify the fuel system for flex fuel to 100% handle any detonation concerns when cranking the boost to whatever those dinky turbos can put out.
    • I would say no, why, because my daughter, who also lives in Goulburn, hasn't recommended us going there Pity, as we miss all the German joints around in Sydney, actually, the restaurants are the only thing I really miss about Sydney, and a special mention to Ishibanboshi at Bondi Junction, their Kara-age Don is heart cloggingly deliciousness (always added a special boiled egg...or 2) 😋
    • Does that German restaurant still exist in the old place out the NW end of Goulburn? When I say "out the NW end of"...I am really being vague. It was 1997 when I was last there, and the only point of reference I can recall is that it was on the opposite side of the main drag from the big merino. And when I say "opposite side of the main drag", I don't mean "on the main drag". It was either a couple of streets back from there, or might have even been out in the sticks a bit further. Was an old farm building or mill or somesuch. And when I say "the big merino" I might actually be thinking of a completely different part of town, because I just looked on maps and the big bugger is not where I remembered him to be! The food was good, consisting largely of various German mystery-meat sausage/loaf things and kartofflen.
    • So while the second sentence is completely correct and the whole point of the conversation, the first sentence bears consideration. If this bloke is just hoping to throw big turbos on and drive it around, because there are no helpful facilities at all in his tropical paradise** then he likely has zero chance of even knowing what the TP is on the last column in the stock maps, let alone know whether the ECU is operating anywhere near it or past it. So the point is very very moot. And, per what I said before, at stock boost on those turbos, you may well be off the end of the map. **I'm just back from Vanuatu, so I know exactly what small Pacific nations can be like wrt paradise without requisite facilities. But it's not even that simple. I put a high flow on my car and had to drive it around without a proper tune because of the lack of opportunity*** to put the bigger AFM and injectors into it to allow it to be tuned. I had to turn the boost down to less than I had before, and back off the boost controller's ramp, because it was exploring parts of the map that it didn't drive in before, and really couldn't access for tuning on the dyno either, and so was pinging. It was still well within the last column, because when I first**** set up the Nistune on the Neo I rescaled all axes of the maps to give some more space to explore. ***Family dyno was broken ****This was 13 years ago, and the TIM thing wasn't a thing then and so TP would definitely grow when pushing past the stock tune's limits.
