Hi all,

I've recently become a skyline owner- an immaculate wine red R33 GTS-T Series II, completely stock standard. Its a fantastic car as is, really enjoying driving it.

But...I had always planned to do a few mods. Not after massive power- this is a daily driver and I don't want to be pulling over for fuel every 10 minutes. Aiming for somewhere in the realms of 230kw.

I'm planning on starting with a turbo-back exhaust system (probably Xforce) and better intake (via an Apexi pod). From people's experience here, what power gains am I likely to achieve? Other than raw figures, what changes to the car am I likely to notice?

And finally- what other mods should I be looking at?

Hey man

Been covered plenty of times on the forums, but I will get you started.

Probably a front mount intercooler setup, a lot available these days. Just Jap do a kit from $345 + postage. It includes all piping, clamps and joiners, pretty much everything you need to install it.

Turbo back exhaust, can pretty much get something off the shelf. Smallest you would go is 2.5", 3" is the preference. Cat back is fine, but turbo back if you really want to see some better improvements. More flow, more gains.

Some sort of cold air intake. Standard air box is fine for what you want, unless you want the nice induction turbo noise, as we all do, then get a pod filter.

Exhaust and cooler might see you a slight boost increase, if not then its more than capable of boost being upped to 12psi or so.

Also wouldn't hurt to upgrade the fuel pump if your upping the boost. Plenty of used GTR pumps available, if no then a BOSCH 040 or a WALBRO is your best bet.

Turbo back exhaust, fount mount intercooler, fuel pump, + 12psi should see you around 200rwkw on standard ECU (been done plenty of times), maybe a little bit more with a SAFC and a tune.

Best to upgrade clutch also if you want to increase boost and get a little bit more power happening, may pay off later down the track.

1) batmbl front/dump pipe & racing cat

2) cat back of your choice (i have a trust pe 2)

3) FMIC

4) Try to get you hands on a power fc

5) Fuel Pump

Thats exactly what I have found, I have FMIC, Full Exhaust, Apexi Pod and boost controller.

It actually runs worse than stock in my opinion and burns a heap of fuel, so if you were planning on doing mods make sure some kind of ECU is in your 1st purchase to tune what you put on.

i got safc2 tuned with 7psi of boost atm, just by grounding out the standard boost solenoid, FLYN front dump pipe, 3" metallic hi flow cat, 3" kakimoto cat back zorst, hybrid fmic, k&n hi flow panel filter and im makin 178rwkw. i just bought an R32 GTST wastegate actuator which will raise my boost again and im told by my tuner, Ray @ RE Customs that i should see around 190-200rwkw with my mods. if u wanna go into 210-220 range you'll need a hi flow turbo, bout 12psi and a piggy back like an SAFC2 or full ecu.

Want 230rwkw? Might as well shoot for 250, 'coz you'll need basically the same mods for both power figures. Start with a full exhaust, to let your stockie turbo spin, then you'll want a decent (75mm thick) FMIC to cool that extra air flow. This'll push the stock ECU into Rich & Retard territory, which'll likely give U spark trouble, if your CoilPacks aren't SuperDuper. So I'd recommend a full-ECU (SAFC's & boost cut defenders etc. are just bandaids, I.M.H.O.)

- That should do you for 180->190rwkw, where you'll probably tap-out the stock Turbo, A.F.M. and Injectors.

Next is a Turbo & Z32 AFM (assuming U got a PowerFC), or a MAFless tune, if you've got a fancy, expensive aftermaket ECU & MAP sensor. I dragged 200rwkw even outta mine with a tidy tune in the PFC and a Z32 afm, but the injectors were at 100% from 5,000rpm to redline ! ! ! You'll also be after fuel pump, Injectors, and possibly a Fuel pressure Reg, and You're done!

- depending on what size turbo/pump/injectors You got, You could probably support up to 300rwkw, however I believe the Pistons have been known to melt at around 270rwkw, and oil pressure is questionable, for this much mumbo.

p.s. Keep your stock airbox installed - it'll MAYBE cost U 5kw at most in this range, and may well keep you out of the EPA test-station for a very long time, as most coppers don't know much more than "Can't have an intercooler AND a pod"

Seriously. (Did I mention, You're meant to get a $500 fine with your second EPA visit??)

There can be a massive difference between the car you love to drive now and one with 230rwkw in terms of how the car drives and comfort levels.

For example lets take traction. At 230rwkw you are going to have an ice skating car on the factory tyres and suspension. You have 230rwkw and a car thats not easy to control under power.

You are better off listing the things you like about the stock car and then the things you would like to improve. 230rwkw is nothing more than a number.

'Doing things' to your car ought to have a point. For example the adding of that Apexi pod you mentioned will see your car go backwards in power if you don't have a cold air box. After you spend the time and money on those two items you have got bugger all power gain for cash that would be better spent eslewhere. Then again if your goal is to have underbonnet 'bling' and/or you like to give police a reason to defect your car then why not?

stock auto

Stock Injectors

Stock AFM

Hi-Flow turbo (vg30 rear etc) on Stock manifold.

FMIC (hybrid copy)

Split Dump Pipe wrapped in heat wrap and 3inch exhaust

SAFC11 (A full replacement ecu would be better, but this does the job)

BOOST98 (ethanol fuel)

Pod filter with 2 cold air inductions.

Thats it..tuned by HITMAN..

There seems to be alot of variables between diferent cars, as the injectors,AFM and pump are fine. I have been running this set-up now for 5months and the only thing to start suffering is the automatic gearbox.

I will be installing a gtr fuel pump soon as it is not a great idea to push the limits of the fuel pump, but it has not hesitated yet. Id also not use the aforementioned as a basis to modify your car though it is an example of what can be done.

Thats crazy! How is your power curve can you post the dyno?

This is very interesting. I made 195rwkw with basically the same mods but no hi flow - standard turbo. I would have thought you would have run into all sorts of problems with the standard afm and ecu running the hi flow... From what you have said - apparently not!

With that in mind, I'm aiming to achieve a tidy 200rwkw. Will probably end up following a similar path to the modification guide on the above site.

dynoed at 286.9 rwhp good result for just breathing mods

Im at work atm but if you do a search on my username I have an entire thread dedicated to it + dyno attachments...if you read it, I only expected about 190rwkw or so hence why i didnt go forward with the usual mods of pump etc.

If i had to start all over again..

I would have got a aftermarket ECU first.. as well as suspension at the same time..

Then go for mods..

hate doing exhaust etc.. and then getting flat spots, running rich etc.. The car becomes slow and shit.. and you will hate it..

unless you got money to spend to do everything at once..
