i've notice in the last 2 weeks in canberra that there seems to be an obscene amount of road kill, mainly big F76k off roo's. next week im moving to gordon, and have to drive to fyshwick and back along the manaro hwy around 3pm and 1am ish,

how can i prevent my car getting smashed?

I drive on a 100km/h back road to work and its full of kangaroos and bunnies, have had a few close calls with kangaroos but havent hit any yet, I've nailed a few bunnies in the skyline though, never fun to clean... Just keep an eye out and if you see a kangaroo near the road start slowing down, can never tell what they are going to do

get a car trailer and borrow a cheap $500 honda, they work very nicely, managed to kill 13 possums, 2 rabbits and something unknown within 30 minutes of driving on a rural road out here :)

If you manage to hit a roo though, hit it with the passenger side of the car, because the honda will crumple :whistling: it'll look cool though and you could brag to all your mates about it

i havent hit anything along there yet, and i've been driving along that rd for years during all hours of the night/day. you do see roo's though, so try not to speed. i did hit a roo once in my 31, but that was along Long Gully rd (very close to monaro hwy). car wasn't too badly damaged, but it did have blood all up the side of it. looked awesome!

My stats:

Got hit 4 times to kangaroos. We've killed 3 roos - One had to be shot down by ranger because it was injured - Joey was taken away by the ranger. Front/quarter panel damages on the Echo, twice.

Another time, a Kangaroo tried to jump over the car, hit from the rear, minor damage to rear plastic wheel guards.

MR2 killed 2 birds and 1 possum.

They just jump out of no where, you can't avoid them. Once you killed 1 or 2, it won't shock you.

I heard that hitting a wombat is pretty bad.

hitting a wombat is awful.... i hit one doing 60kph in my MX-6, which had 18's, 30 profile tyres and rock hard suspension (ouch!). it launched the front of my car about 1m into the air and landed with an almight thump! i thought i drove over a boulder!

I took out a bird while overtaking in my 33 at about 130km once, Flew straight in the path of my car and went SMACK into my windscreen then got tossed backwards over the top of my car...

Damn thing put a small smudge on my windscreen!

Ive taken out a fox under my back wheel. that stank a few days later

Scott "Thats funny and unusual" :(

Hehe, i have only aimed once, but im too cautious nowa days, I dont want to break my spotlights

HEY!!! You never told me that.

I had a mate that hit a HORSE on the way to the snow once. he was going about 80. the car was destroyed. it was an old school mazda 626. the poor horse got up and staggered to the side of the road and died.

haha i hit a bird in my old car (Hyundai Accent), bird managed to get in between rear window and antenna while i was going about 60km. Destroyed the antenna the day before someone was coming to inspect it...

I was driving from Moulamein to Deniliquin one night in the work vehicle - a Landcruiser with a winch and bullbar - and I hit three roo's in a group. Blood and guts everywhere.

The next day we drove into Deni for lunch and when we came out [to get in the vehicle and go back to work] there were two stray dogs licking the bullbar.

Ohh yeah, and the impact bent the bar a bit and tore the front number plate off. Never did find that plate.

My mate was supposed to put down a horse in a paddock. It was apparently the ONLY horse in the paddock.. so he shot it after saying, "What now.. b!tch!?"

The next day we woke up and was questioned by the owner why we didn't put the horse down.

Coincedently, the neighbours were missing a horse.

EDIT: BTW, I haven't hit anything yet *touch wood*

    • Actually,  just remembered there should be info in the threads (somewhere) about swapping to a manual steering rack and deleting power steering all together.
    • Also had a look at the Nissan JP website looks like the 400r has a slightly shorter ratio than than the regular V37 3.133 VS 2.937 which from a guy who has driven both 3.69 vs 4.11 ratios in the S15 is bugger all. Seems that the AUTO Z runs the same ratio as the 400R but can't find any info as to if its an open or LSD? More often than not the auto LSD is open
    • Do not replace the power steering lines with this stuff. If it's anything like the Chase Bays stuff it will leak and be worse than stock. The reason why the reservoir is on the LH/passenger side of the car is because that's just where the reservoir was most convenient to fit. Don't overthink this stuff. The intake/cold side of the engine is pretty busy on these cars. And again, the hardpipe is designed to be a janky power steering cooler. In theory you can replace it with a real power steering cooler but that's really only for track use where boiling the fluid is a distinct possibility. Start with the low pressure lines feeding the pump from the reservoir. Make sure there isn't a bunch of junk in the reservoir filter. Be careful to not get ATF all over the engine bay. I hate dealing with ATF spills, you can clean it up and the slightest crevice will still release more oil that can still drip over time. You also want to inspect for leaks before you make a mess and can't tell what happened. Most likely you have a leak somewhere that is allowing fluid out and air in. Failing that it's allowing air in but not fluid out. Only place I can really see that happening is on the low pressure side because the pump will pull a slight vacuum to draw fluid in. Everything after the pump is high pressure or lower pressure, approaching atmospheric by the time it returns to the reservoir.
    • I did a skidpan night at SMSP this week, it was much cheaper than $350. But yeah, you need to slap an LSD in that thing.  I put an OS Giken in the 370Z and it's f**king MARVELOUS even compared to Nissan's viscous LSD. So you're saying it's free now that it's a housing estate? 😂
    • Nah, the car seems to run exactly as it did prior, in saying this it does "seem" to be better down low, like more eager to rev, but that may be 100% placebo effect from intake noise But, I'm not worried about it at all, in the end it is a fairly low compression NA engine that has a well shrouded intake,  if it is getting hotter IAT I cannot notice anything negative performance wise from the seat of my pants thrashing it about on the street or sitting in traffic, so meh, car now now makes induction noise so I'm happy
