THE army has spent more than $500,000 of taxpayers' money to build a hot rod to attract recruits.

The heavily modified six-wheel Land Rover, known as Armygeddon, is used to promote the army at car shows.

It is powered by a seven litre, 900 horsepower racing engine, which was custom built by Starr Performance engineering for $120,000.

"The Armygeddon has been developed as a tool to increase the exposure of army to those interested in motorsport," a defence statement said.

Army chief and confessed rev-head Lt-Gen Peter Leahy said the Armygeddon was an amazing piece of machinery.

"Anyone can do a normal burnout, but this vehicle can do what others can only dream about," Lt-Gen Leahy said.

"I am very proud to say it is one of the army's newest and coolest recruiting tools."

The vehicle was built for an initial cost of $305,000, but the construction budget blew out to $425,000.

Half a million tax payers money for a recruitment drive aimed at us car enthusiasts..

So how many of us are putting our hands up after seeing this pimpin rod???

did they build the engine out of solid gold or something? $500K for that? why not just buy a lambo and paint it in cammo and get "ARMY" plates? then pay me $100K for 6 months to drive it around. still have plenty of change and I reckon it would do more good. for me, and the army.

yea it's old news however, it's based on the amry GS 6x6 land rover which they have put in new eng drive line and the like. it wasn't ment for promo but was built buy army trade apprentices and now they are useing it for promo duties.

the total cost is apx $500.000.00 thats cause it's had 2 diffrent paint sceams and diffrent sets of tyres. and it has done burnouts (all 4 rear wheels) what else can do v8 style burnouts with 4 wheels.

i know its old news but i didnt think it was covered here before, and i wanted to see peoples opinions as i think its 'overkill' to spend that kind of our money for this reason, especially at a time when we all realise how much tax we payed for the previous year!

ugly wheels

ugly everything.

they should have just spent the money on making an amphibian jet engine car that produces beer as a waste by-product. oh and some promo girls in camo bikini's with big jugs saying "we want you.....to join the army" would have worked better than that ugly thing.
