Hey guys and gals of SAU, well if you have seen my thread with the recent results on the dyno then you may also be aware I want to build an engine to maximise the potential of my turbo setup as well as give me some peace of mind when I hit the loud pedal and when I take it for a thrash at the track.

Basically I'm after any information, experiences, knowledge or recommendations you guys have for me as I’ll readily admit I don’t know much about places to go, hence I need your help. I have chatted with a few workshops but I would like to hear some non bias (ok well probably more like LESS bias) opinions and recommendations from you guys.

To keep the peace, I’m not going to mention who I have and haven’t chatted too as I don’t want this to turn into a workshop war thread, nor do I want to play favourites. If you have anything negative could you please PM me as I am still interested, however I am well and truly opposed to slandering others names in the public forum.

Cheers

Ryan

racepace is nice, but if you don't own an rb26 i think its pretty hard to get work done on your car. it seemed to me that they preferred to work on rb26's which is unfortunate as they're a friendly bunch of ppl there who seem to konw their stuff.

Isn't Ray your tuner/mechanic??

Why not have a chat with him??

Hahaha remember in my 1st post how I said I have already chatted with some people............well yeah he MAY have been one of them >_< . Anyway, thanks for all the information so far guys. Basically what I really want to do is gather as much information from all the reputable engine builders in Vic, along with all the info I can gather from the forum and compile an outline of what I want for my rebuild as I know some places do things differently to others. The way I see it, I'll be able to "filter" out the necessary and unnecessary parts of the build and come to the best possible conclusion on what I do and do not need if that makes sense to you guys (it did in my head)

not sure about your experience but i never had any problems getting work done to my rb25, in fact Ben always comments its great working on my car being one of the best looked after cars he has seen.. >_<

Don't expect the builders to give away all their secrets....

And yes Benno prefers to work with GTRs... but it doesn't hurt to ask, if he likes you, you may get lucky :D

Have a heard about your car, Ben speaks very highly of it....

LOL...as opposed to me. I think mine is more like the car John Candy drove in Uncle Buck

I think the big bonus with the likes of Racepace and RE Customs is that you are using the person who built the engine to install and tune the engine. You make life hard for yourself using a certain engine builder, then to get it installed by your local mechanic or yourself. Then tuned by someone different again.

If the end result is less then you hoped its hard to pick if its the build, the installation or the tune. I always think the tuner will do a better job when they know exactly what it is they are tuning, and they know it has the right fuel pump, injectors etc etc

    • I mean, I got two VASS engineers to refuse to cert my own coilovers stating those very laws. Appendix B makes it pretty clear what it considers 'Variable Suspension' to be. In my lived experience they can't certify something that isn't actually in the list as something that requires certification. In the VASS engineering checklist they have to complete (LS3/NCOP11) and sign on there is nothing there. All the references inside NCOP11 state that if it's variable by the driver that height needs to maintain 100mm while the car is in motion. It states the car is lowered lowering blocks and other types of things are acceptable. Dialling out a shock is about as 'user adjustable' as changing any other suspension component lol. I wanted to have it signed off to dissuade HWP and RWC testers to state the suspension is legal to avoid having this discussion with them. The real problem is that Police and RWC/Pink/Blue slip people will say it needs engineering, and the engineers will state it doesn't need engineering. It is hugely irritating when aforementioned people get all "i know the rules mate feck off" when they don't, and the actual engineers are pleasant as all hell and do know the rules. Cars failing RWC for things that aren't listed in the RWC requirements is another thing here entirely!
    • I don't. I mean, mine's not a GTR, but it is a 32 with a lot of GTR stuff on it. But regardless, I typically buy from local suppliers. Getting stuff from Japan is seldom worth the pain. Buying from RHDJapan usually ends up in the final total of your basket being about double what you thought it would be, after all the bullshit fees and such are added on.
    • The hydrocarbon component of E10 can be shittier, and is in fact, shittier, than that used in normal 91RON fuel. That's because the octane boost provided by the ethanol allows them to use stuff that doesn't make the grade without the help. The 1c/L saving typically available on E10 is going to be massively overridden by the increased consumption caused by the ethanol and the crappier HC (ie the HCs will be less dense, meaning that there will definitely be less energy per unit volume than for more dense HCs). That is one of the reasons why P98 will return better fuel consumption than 91 does, even with the ignition timing completely fixed. There is more energy per unit volume because the HCs used in 98 are higher density than in the lawnmower fuel.
    • No, I'd suggest that that is the checklist for pneumatic/hydraulic adjustable systems. I would say, based on my years of reading and complying with Australian Standards and similar regulations, that the narrow interpretation of Clause 3.2 b would be the preferred/expected/intended one, by the author, and those using the standard. Wishful thinking need not apply.
    • Yes they do. For some maybe. But for those used the most by abusers, ie Skylines, the numbers are known. The stock eyebrow height for R32/3 Skylines is about 365/375mm or thereabouts. The minimum such heights are recorded in adjacent columns in the database.
