Anyone had any experience with the HKS twin GT2835's on a GTR? What are your thoughts on these turbos on an RB26. What engine work and cams etc would work well with these turbos? Maximum power made using these turbos (and @what psi)? Best 1/4 mile?

I was thinking of using 280° HKS cams with headwork and bottom end strengthened.

Thanks in advance.

Charlie.

well I have driven a gtst with rb26 and 2835r's

this vehicle http://www.meggala.com/ther32hot.htm

you get postivie boost from around 3k rpm full boost @ 6k rpm or so first gear was a waste of time when on boost 2nd gear was interesting/scary, third was scary and so was 4th If you can afford a motor to handle these turbo's you will find avery satisfying package the car was running 272 cams I think.

Talk to dr_drift from BMT on here he and his partner are performing work on that car btw it had a hks dogbox or trust one not sure it was a h pattern the nicest box I have used period.

Hi NXTIME, personally I think 2835's are too big for a 2.6 litre engine. I have found the 2530's to be much better, stronger mid range with almost as good top end and useable power all through the rev range with good throttle response. You may get a higher maximum power with 2835's but the average power over the required rpm range (say 4,000 rpm to 8,000 rpm) will be higher with 2530's.

It all depends on what you intend using the car for. For a road car that does a bit of track work, the 2530's are very hard to beat.

Hope that helps

Thanks for the replies, guys. It will be used for drag and mated with a 6 speed (Trust?) box. Also looking into a stroker kit. What about cams? The head will be upgraded also with valves, springs etc. I like to drive on the street, so it will be used there, but it's main aim is the strip.

meggala, since it will be 4wd, I don't think that the traction will be as big a problem as the gts-t. I have started another post regarding the Trust 6 speed box.

enjoy mate you will have traction issues they will be fun dont stress 272 or 280 cams ashuld be good get the heads done as well which I assume you will the gtst was very drivable on the street so dont worry about that the triple plate clutchwas a bit edgy thats all have fun I know you will in a car like that.

people can talk about it but once you drive a car in that type of tune is when you fully appreciacte then. and I am not one for big hp infact I am about restrain but I kept saying to my self that car was scary but you know what is even scaryier is that I could live with it :)

good luck

hey meggala, how did that thing pass compliance with the external gate up in the bay like that?

all i can say is 2835rs are sweet! everything ive heard and read says that they are the best in hks range for compromise between torque and top end.

if a 2835 is too big for a rb26? then what would you think of it on a rb20 sydneykid?

Munro has done this with a 3L bottom end, I think it made over 900hp, runs mid 9s on street (nitto) rubber. For box, I believe trust boxes dont handle the power too well, hollinger is probably a better choice. If Munro reads this thread I am sure he will reply, but otherwise you could always pm him.

If you can get hold of the back issues of HPI - that is his 3L streeter that is written about.

yeah has always been running but lacks mgt. although off the road for the moment cause was changing the exhaust manifold gasket and found that one of the studs has snapped off and needs to be drilled out. bummer. while its being worked on considering getting adj cam gears put in.

so whats the deal with that car?

Meggala, thanks for the info. Where is this car now and when will it see the dyno and drag strip? Any more info on the Trust gearbox?

Steve, thanks for that, I have heard plenty about the few 9 (and 8) second GTR's down under and am in awe of some of the set ups.

hey Aybee

I believe you put 2 on an RB26 and one one an RB20 - i think there is a difference... for a street car, 2835s are too laggy, but if its dragger, then why not...

S of S

i know that you put two on a rb26. but still i dont think that it is too big for an rb20. i bought my car with one and its not too laggy even without the mgt that it so desperately needs. boost gauge starts going positive at around 2900 and gate opens at 4500 hitting 1.1-1.2 bar. i dont think its that bad for street.

Thats how to do it. As for gearbox Fark off that trust piece of Krap, and go for an OS Giken product (5spd gearset). Its cheaper and wont cause you anywhere near the trouble of the trust which is weak, cant handle any decent power and poorly made. I have seen these time and time again sheer teeth.

Boost response would be even better if you used the JUN 2.7 stroker kit

hahaha ross what a joke you better tell all the guys in japan running 9's and tens with trust boxes they are idiots.

the trust box is a dog box the osgiken is just a stronger gear set and not a dog box. you hav eboviously not driven a trust box have you they are very nice

cheers

Then you better tell Munro, Ben @ racepace (Melb), and Garage Active (in Japan running 9's R33 GTR HPI issue #26 page #24)

that their cars arnt that good because they all had a go with the Trust gear box and all stripped teeth. What I said is that they cant handle any DECENT power, and this is only relating to GTR's NOT Gts-t's.

to quote HPI issue #26 page #24:

"Keeping the Trust gearbox in one piece is a different matter. The trust six-speed, while durable in LOW POWER applications, simply cant cut it when placed in a 9 second drag car. It commonly strips gear faces, breaks shafts and generally falls to bits.

Countering this is the great collection of spares that Fonz has in place - we counted six Trust transmissions. He reckons its easier to keep rebuilding them, rather than switch to an "exotic brand" like a Hollinger."

Dog box or not, the trust really is for low power applications, and having a dog box is not the latest or greatest application either. I never stated that I have driven a car with a trust dog box, nor am I an authority on the matter, but I dont believe driving a GTS-T once with one qualifies as an expert either.

Please Megalla correct me again if im wrong, but can you name any other guys in japan running 9's and tens with trust boxes that run them reliably and without multiple and common failures, because I would love to know. Look forward to hearing from you.

Ross

    • I removed the head expecting to find broken and bent valves, but instead found number 1 at TDC and cylinder 2 at the top of its cylinder stroke as well, thought that was weird and proceeded to push cylinder 2 back down until it either bottomed out on its other piston half or the conrod either way we found the issue kind of,  now to remove the engine and see how the block looks, hopefully its just the top off a piston.
    • A little more work this week.  Fitted astra power steering pump in the boot with a lowe fabrication bracket. Gave the pump a good clean, fitted Anderson plug and high pressure fitting. With the intercooler being flipped under rad support factory headlights weren't going to work. Ordered a set of origin battle lights, they arrived so got them test fitted. Will require some fiddling to fit nice but was an easy quick option for now. And today we pulled out the manual Rb gearbox and test fitted a ZF 8HP50. It will fit with some casting tabs cut off and small tap of the tunnel with a hammer. Pick up the adapter plate Wednesday so hopefully all bolted in Friday and measure for tailshaft which will be a 2 piece. Been doing a lot of ecu, pdm and tcu loom design so when comes to wiring it in a few weeks will all go smoothly.
    • FYP. Sadly. Even bolt cutters wouldn't take 2 sec. But in the days of 18v angle grinders, nothing is safe.
    • One piece driveshaft I would recommend a dual CV setup otherwise stick to OEM. I have heard most one piece driveshafts cause excess vibration otherwise. The transmission grind I'm quite familiar with. You can try shockproof gear oil, otherwise you need a new transmission. The shifter is extremely simple on these cars. If you want pull apart the assembly and replace the plastic bushing but I doubt that fixes anything. The tail light issue is very common, unfortunately new tail lights are long discontinued. The trunk antenna going up always is because your radio doesn't have a true power antenna control, just remote amp power signal. There is a blank switch plate that you can pop out and install a switch for this or alternatively source a head unit that has proper antenna control. Throttle body sticking you have to disambiguate by disconnecting the cable and seeing if the linkages are the problem or something else. There is a procedure to adjust them, refreshing them is also somewhat involved if that's the issue. I have dealt with many of these issues. Old cars really are fractals of problems. The more you fix the more you discover there is to fix.
