I must admit I maybe over 30 :D but I gues in this case it helps :) and I do have garrage parking (well under house, but lookup).

What about if you have a good alarm with noise and imobileisers and proximity mines etc... would they give you cheaper deal?

i have a 99 s2 stagea insured with Just Car $1150 with rating 1 protection, windscreen cover, etc.

The only thing Just Car DONT have is choice of repairer, but they do get 2 quotes and give you lifetime warranty on repairs so hopefully this will be ok if I ever need it (hopefully not - touch wood).

I will be staying with Just Car because IMO they are simply the easiest and best insurance company to deal with when you own an import, especially a modified one.

Just Car dont need you to list off for them where the car will be parked at hourly intervals for every freaking day of the year, nor do they need to know what you had for breakfast and why...

All they want to know is the details of your car, and they usually know a bit about imports (most times I've called the person on the phone owns an import themselves and I've even before had a conversation about their car etc).

I just cant trust most other companies to give a quote and actually later down the track stand by the insurance that you've been paying for. It'd be all too easy for them to turn around 12 months later and say, sorry we dont insure that car anymore. Trust me I've had that happen...its basically stealing.

Good luck to those with shannons too. Every time I've rung them they refuse to ensure my stagea, even though other people have called with much less unique cars and had no trouble at all. If I cant even get a quote, what are my chances of successfully making a claim with them? They advertise about insuring enthusiast's cars, and i explain that i've modified my stagea to get 160awkw, that i've been on several skyline cruises and a photoshoot, but still they say no. I mean what sort of company turns away potential customers? Wont be calling them again thats for sure.

i wouldnt touch just cars with a 10 foot pole personally i took both my cars from then as they have the new policy rules and they are shocking.

no choice of repairers

if they think they made the condition of the car better than it was before an accident repair than u have to pay the extra

they use second hand parts

they dropped my stagea value about 4k in one year and upped the premium another $300

theres a few other things on the back of the policy pages but i cant remember them.

also i have a friend who got her car repaired through just cars and is having no end of dramas trying to sort it out and them not accepting blame on a basic accident case, car went into repairer (panelshop) running fine with rear end damage and come out not running and wont start or run at all for some reason and insurance told her its her problem now. Plus they refused to fix the tailights with new ones becuase they claim they were damaged before the accident and not in the accident, even though she was hit directly in the rear.

dodgy shit if u ask me and i dont plan on hanging around to find out on a claim if it happens to come up.

I'm with Shannon's but got a quote today with JCI for the hell of it.....excess was $1500 compared with $500 for Shannons, also Premium was $1150 compared to $950 Shannons.

No luck reducing premium or excess with an Advanced Driving Certificate????yet my work put us though the course to reduce theirs.....wtf

I've heard plenty of good reports about JCI too. I believe most insurers will want to use factory parts so 2nd hand parts are probably your only option unless you want to pay millions of dollars in insurance to cover importing every part and panel from japan (besides, do they even still make these new?).

Say all you want about shannons, but their claims stuff dont mean a thing to me since I've never gotten past the first phone call - and I'm not arrogant on the phone or anything like that. Just wanted an insurance quote just like any other company i've rung. Shannons do have good policies and very good reputation though. I'll give them that much.

JCI have always been the cheapest for me and always easiest to deal with. Why would I want choice of repairer anyway? Who would I choose? I dont know any repairers and JCI DO know theirs so if I was to choose any old place out of the phone book chances are the repair would be worse than if they handled it.

As for the insured value dropping, there's every chance your stagea's actual resale value dropped $4K in 1 year if you bought from a dealer (not your fault - i'm in the same predicament). Mine did a similar thing, probably because I paid too much for it to start with...but even though its now insured for ~$4K less than I paid for it, I'd say it still about $2K above market value if I were to sell it - so where's the problem?

I dont think JCI are perfect - I just recommend them because they are easier to deal with than any other company i've called - and usually have the lowest premiums. Their excesses are high to offset the low premium, but once over 25 these drop a bit as well. And for a lot of people under 25, JCI is the only place that will even consider insuring them. Hopefully I will have better luck if I ever need to make a claim. I've worked for an insurance company before (not JCI) and they all have good and bad days. Either way they will pay up if the car is stolen and thats my main reason for having insurance. If it wasnt' the fact that I could potentially lose ~$20K in a write-off or theft, I'd probably just go third party. ;)

Hmmm,

I laughed at shannon's when they tried to say 'your not a car enthusiast', anyway what would they know from some

silly over the phone questions, they have always overcharged, shop around and you'll find a better deal.

I rang about 5 places and all were cheaper than Shannon's for the monthly/yearly payment (This was back in May '07).

However the winner was GIO Custom cars $550-600 yearly, full comp with a reasonable excess.

I contacted GIO in Adelaide and they told me they don't insure imports?

Yeah, GIO is not the same as GIO CUSTOM - different phone no., different deal!

Look on the net!

My premium is still over the $1G mark but I have heaps of mods listed! Best deal around for a daily driven car!

I've looked but can't find a website. Is this the one you mean? http://www.customcarinsurance.com.au/

It looks... interesting. It wants a username and password (???) and when you don't supply those it redirects you to some broken page of terms and conditions for a competition?? Maybe "GIO Custom Car Insurance" to me sounds like it maybe a 3rd party who retail GIO Insurance? Anybody able to provide more info. on how I can get in touch with them?

Thanks,

DaveB

try this website

http://www.gio.com.au/gio/promotion/custom..._insurance.html

Just got a quote from them, $980 compared to current Shannons policy of $1400. Less restrictions than shannons too, like no need for security alarm, secured car parking, etc.

Worth looking at, not sure of their payouts though as have not dealt with them. Any insurance company is going to be reluctant to pay out if it looks dodgy though.

Thanks Stu; gave them a call but they don't insure in SA  I should've read the fineprint...

Custom Car Insurance is issued by GIO General Limited ABN 22 002 861 583 in VIC, NSW and ACT only. To approved applicants.

i rang yesterday they were deerer than shannons and then offered to do same premuim.excess was still gunna be 600 bux dearer than shannons tho.also some ridiculous excess figure if a non nominated driver is at the wheel and something goes wrong.all in all i think shannons is best for me there were no hassles dealing with them at all and shiploads better deal than justcars who just about wanted to know what time i crap but hey each to their own i spose regards mike

I don't get it - I got a quote for my pulsar, from GIO and it was more than twice what it was from SGIO :)

Mind you, I tried to insure it for agreed, and they wouldn't let me because I paid too far under the market value :D

Gotta wonder though...if GIO custom Insurance have to "price match" or "better XXX company" - how good really are they?

Can't they get their pricing good/right in the first place?

Just imagine the claims process then....

    • Hey all, not sure how active SAU is anymore but will ask away anyways. Just wanted to get some experience on the 2008 model GTR CBA model.  I've hit that age in my life (43) where I'm like fk it time to get my dream (midlife crisis) car. Looking at importing one in and seeing if these can be reliable if the main flaws are fixed up. Plan is to keep money aside to do the following straight off the bat to future proof it: * install a stage 1 rebuilt trans with all new bits and pieces.  * install a new Bellhousing from the later model GTRs. Or potentially an upgraded stronger version like MAD or ATR. Besides the above two things and typical maintenance items anything else you'd recommend doing.   Been speaking to a few people and the engine on these are very reliable apparently. But keen on the view of the community here. Hoping to find a nice grade 4.5 with low mileage in Grey. I'd go black but swirls too easy. Look forward to your responses and feedback. Cheers
    • Do Alan and Keith work on Skylines now? I remember buying stuff from them when I owned my Ralliart Lancer a few moons ago. Definitely genuine guys and be excellent if they dealt with the skyline platform as well.
    • Hey all, I'm Gaston from Sydney's West.  I was a member on here when I was a younger lad and owned a mint R33 GTS-T. Ended up selling it and getting married having kids (yadda yadda) we all know how the story goes. Now I'm back with the intention to get my midlife crisis (dream) car ... a R35 GTR.  You'll see me about asking questions and searching the forums. Good to be back and can't wait to get back an Import again.
    • I have to put something here in order to post the photos. From what I could gather there's more enthusiasm for modified cars now than there has been for years. There were probably more younger people there than older (me included lol) which was a good sign.  It did seem like the record least amount of representation of the 90's era hero cars on display though. Like maybe one or two examples of S-chassis Nissans, and maybe 3 or 4 R-chassis. By comparison there were a lot of Civics from that era but in all there were about 10 - 12 EG/EK Civic Type R.  Euro exotics are always there in large numbers, led by Liberty Walk...... say what you will about kids using markers to scribble on a Ferrari F40, it did seem like a stunt to infuriate Ferrari enthusiasts, or Ferrari itself. I wonder if there's something more to it. Either way LBWK have done some heinous things to a Lamborghini Miura this time. They should stop now.
    • Engines and drivelines are not war stoppers for me mate, busted arse bodies and un-obtainium parts and panels are though Both cheap Brumbies I looked at had trashed tubs and a fair bit of rust
