Hi guys,

finally had my engine swap work done to my '71 240z,

Have put in an rb20det w/gearbox, cooler, eng. management system, surge tank, fuel pumps

Looking at getting the exhaust done for it in the next few days and am curious on any thoughts in regards to a size.

I'm thinking 2 1/4 - 2 1/2", with a hi-flow cat and effective muffler. I've had a couple of friends tell me to go 3", but i'm not convinced its going to really help the performance of the car, moreso just making it louder than i want.

Have had a search through the forums with not much success, sorry if i'm repeating a gone over thread.

Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again

yep  fully agree

3" is best, a 3" will sound nicer, deeper, it won't be louder if you do it right

Put in 2 mufflers, or a muffler and a resonator, one just after the cat, one at the end of the car

It'll sound very nice

3" will drone like a m$%()#*(er, I'd be going to a good exhaust shop and saying "i want maximum power for minimal drone". 3" is very hard if not impossible to stop droning, it'll give you headaches, did in both cars i've owned with it (and this one is only a catback). imho

there is this new invention called mufflers. if you get good ones they will cut the noise and drone. get a good centre muffler and a nice oval muffler on the rear and it should be all good.

Bit off topic, but what brand resonator's do people use? I mean theres plenty of info on mufflers but resonators seem to be lacking on info like cfm flowed and noise reduction. Anyone recommend one?

trying to find a good 3" resonator is hard. most are too skinny through the body. just get a 3" off centre-centre oval muffler put in the middle, then a either a straight through 3" oval muffler on the rear, or a 2nd off centre-centre muffler for the rear.

Maybe dont be a tight ass and get a decent exhaust made?

Mine have never "droned" and they were 3" 3 times, and soon a 3.5"

Drone is a resultant from harmonics down the length of the system. Proper resonator / muffler choice should eliminate drone in ANY pipe size.

SMB are really popular in the rotary world, were a 3.5" system, comprising of SMB cat and muffler, bring 400hp turbo setups to legal limits, with no drone.

also the wall thickness and material of the pipe used has a bid effect on the sound and any harmonics (drone). generally mild steel is sold in thicker pipe than stainless and the mild generally sounds a bit nicer with less resonance.

    • Good morning all, Bit of a random question but figured I’d finally throw it out after wondering for a long while. Before I start, I'm hoping to do this purely out of personal preference. I think it would look better at night, and don't mind at all spending a few hours and dollars to get it done. I've copied this from a non-Skyline specific forum, so I apologize for the explanation of our headlight switch setup that we all know. Here we go: Zero lights (switch off) Parking lights (switch position 1) being a rectangular marker on the outside of the housing, my low beam being the projector in the centre (position 2), and a high beam triggered by my turn signal stalk. Most North American cars I’ve owned of this era have power to the amber corner (turning indicator) light as part of the first switch (parking lights). I’d love to have these amber corners receive power when the headlights and parking lights are on (headlight switch), yet still blink when using the turn signal which is of course a separate switch. Hopefully I’ve explained my question correctly. Is anyone aware of a way in which I might be able to achieve this? Thanks in advance
    • My heads are cathedral port! It's likely possible, but I don't want to add any extra moving parts (I know they don't move) between the heads, manifolds, etc. It will also affect how injectors/fuel rails etc sit and I don't really know if it would change how the FAST manifold goes/sits/fits. I have the LS6 steam pipes already as I have a very late LS1 block so it should be fine. I couldn't find anyone who had ever actually used one for this purpose, it seems 100% of people grind the water pump. The thermal spacers are 12mm and are half way to the cost of the newer water pump anyhow... so if it comes to that I suppose I'd rather buy a new pump. The bearing in the pump I do have is a little.. clunky, but it hasn't done that much time and I never noticed it when the car was together in the past few years, so..
    • The bushing has failed, not all that uncommon for a car of this age.  Any mechanic should be able to push in a new bushing for you, or you can probably buy the entire lower control arm, complete with bushes.
    • Could you not use "thermal" spacers to give the clearance, like the ones I used between the blower and head? That raised the manifold height by around 10-15mm Albeit the ones I used were for cathedral ports, but I assume they have similar for rectangular ports????
    • Thanks Paul I reached out to Autotainment but they no longer work on JDM cars as the guy who used to do the work moved on and is no longer doing that kind of work. I am talking with Level Up Audio though.
