Hi,

I'm looking at upgrading the lsd on my r33 (as it no longer works) i've worked out which brand i will be buying (NISMO) but i'm not sure weather i should go for a 2way over the 1.5way.

The car is daily driven, and most of the track time i see is grip events but i dont mind a drift event here and there. Is there any major loss in going for a 2way compare to the 1.5way?

well a 1.5way is still a 2 way. just weaker on deccel (which is good unless you like backing it into to corners all the time). up to you. if you are hard core into drift then a 2 way is the go.

hmmm, what do you mean by backing it into a conrner?

will i have more chance of braking traction with a 2way into corners ?

1.5way for a street/track car <-- I use a Kaaz, and it's great!!

2way for drift only car

I have heard of too many accidents with 2way diffs on the street.

Under acceleration both are equal, but under deceleration the 2way will lock just the same as acceleration but the 1.5way requires more force to lock the second wheel. This 1.5way allows you to coast through round-abouts and turn corners easily without having to take it out of gear.

i was abit worry about the 2way lsd as i've driven a 86 with a 2way kaaz and i found it extremely easy for the rear end to come out when turing but i wasnt too sure if it was just the lsd or the car setup

a 1.5 way is much better suited to track work (for ameture track work) because they dont lock up as easy under de-acceleration but remember you have a certain amount of clutch/shims you can put in the diff (the clutch packs for the lsd) to make it stronger/ weaker in its lock up . there wouldnt be alot of difference in them if people knew how to set them up properly :D (on a side note, did you know that v8 supercars use a full spool) , it comes down to your driving style/skill in the end for the decision

Under acceleration the 1.5way and 2way lock up at the same rate: Provided they are the same make and have been set-up the same, with the same amount of shims.

The difference is only under deceleration.

Do you drift exclusively? No, then get a 1.5 way. Yes, then get a 2 way.

If you get a 2 way and you track your car then you will be driving around the diff on corner entry as it will unsettle the car in anything but a straight line when braking/decellerating. Which means any corners where you have to brake in a curve, arse end tries to come around so you are backing it into corners as Beer Baron has already stated. It's great if your car is an understeery pig as it gets the nose in, but otherwise just a pain.

For occasional drift the 1.5 way will do the job. It just means you need to initiate the slide a bit differently. Plenty of guys drift with 1.5 ways.

i hate the kaaz diffs, bear in mind if you buy a decent diff many are 1.5way and 2-way switchable. CUSCO for example do this and NISMO also has the ability to do this and to tune the torque preload WITHOUT removing the diff. i hate the whole kaaz feel and design.... just in case you missed i the first time :rofl:

I totally agree that the Nismo diff is better. But i got my diff from an Australian supplier at a very reasonable price (fair bit cheaper than Nismo) and it does the job VERY nicely.

Agreed. Got mine for $800 new and its good enough for my thrashing around...

I havnt driven it cos I ripped my achillies and on crutches for ANOTHER 4 weeks... no deca driving for me, will come down though Al with Alan.

    • Thanks for the reply @GTSBoy Haven't really thought of that yet, but you are right. If the hose was damaged it should be absolutely pissing by now. I'll put some heat sleeve around it for good measure since I'm already removing the line anyway.  Maybe I'll put on some of the stock hardlines if I ever fully remove the turbos again. Maybe when T51R modding the compressor housings? Might be a fun mod on GT28s for that "fake single turbo" effect.
    • Update 1: I did some work on the car already before finalizing this post and my "issues" list. I dropped the Tomei exhaust in favor of the HKS Hi Power Silent. Sounds nice and I can actually hear myself think now. Also gives me a realistic chance to legally drive without silencer inserts. A bit of cheating was necessary to still be able to mount the Top Secret style diffuser. Some malusage of washers and a bit of "convincing" toward the brackets and exhaust hanger seemed to do the trick. The shaky steering wheel has been resolved as various suspension components were worn, like sway bar bushings and link bars. Most notably the two steering tie rod ends. Had some trouble finding bushings because my sway bars are not OEM thickness, 23.x up front and 27 rear. But non adjustable, so no aftermarket I suppose. Maybe they are nismo units? Turbo oil drain hoses were definitely still the originals and are new now. Wasn't the cause of the turbo oil leak sadly. Currently removing the rear turbo because of it, I suspect the braided oil feed line is the culprit. This issue needs to be dealt with so I can work towards actually getting the turbo setup legal and inspected. Two new issues to add to the list as well. Rear Main seal is probably leaking. Time will show how bad it is, I don't really want to drop the gearbox right now just for the stupid seal. Could fix a few other things in one go once I do that. Front right driveshaft grease is going past the cv boot, so at some point I'll fix that too.
    • Ok so no 4cyl clutch... Yeah it is a factory manual. So if iam correct i need clutch and flywheel too?     • You're probably right about that one. Thanks for your suggestions, I hope I don't need a new 3rd brake light. Although wiring issues might arguably be worse. Right now I'm in the midst of a turbo removal because of my oil leak, other problems are going to have to wait for now.
    • Hell, I know that much. So far I just put it off as "part of the deal".
