I Want A Plasma Or Lcd.

Finally did my tax and am getting 3.8k back, so was hoping to upgrade the TV at home.

Annoying thing is, I don't really know much about Plasmas or LCD's, and the advantages of either one.

So I would really appreciate if somebody could point out the advantages of either one, or even better, point me to a store that has decent prices, or even recommend a specific brand and model. Was hoping to spend under 3k for one, and get decent resolution out of the ps3 (that's getting purchased for the remaining .8k)

We recently bought a 42" AWA LCD from Big W for $1700

I know it sounds dodgy, but the LCD panel is made by LG, it has a native resolution of 13xx x 768 and has all the inputs you could want including HDMI

Unless you are a complete videophile I can't see the need to spend another 1 - 2K for essentially the same thing. That money can be better spent on the car

Honestlly each have their pro's and cons.

The current range from Samsung are very hard to go past, their new panels are the same res as their LCD pannels. Plus Plazma gives you faster refresh and very deep blacks.

As where many LCD's suffer from not being able to produce black light, their blacks look dark blue or even grey sometimes. WHich is not good if your watching a dark movie. (ie. Horror)

Lcd also generally suffers from lamp bleed, its where the lamps positioned either side of the screen bleed white light into the corners of the picture, hard to expalin but easy to point out.

Plazma on the other hand can suffer from ghosting and pixel shift. Both problems when you have fast moving action. However that said the current generation of processors in the panels has corrected this to the point where its not really and issue anymore. The other down side to plazma is they are difficult to repair. So in 5 years if she goes boom then buy a new one. That said, get an extended warranty and you'll be sure to have many years of enjoyment.

That said I choose plazma over LCD.

PS. Nothing can produce black light, I mean t say the plazma can make black more realistic than LCD.

PSS. Type your question into a google search and you will be bombarded with a million articles with the pros and cons. These above are the main issues I looked at when buying.

I just picked up a 50 and a 42 inch Samsung Q Series Plasma, I like them for the larger sizes, but anything under 42 I go with LCD, I have a 22 inch LCD int he bed room which is good but just does not look good for action movies...

bought a 42" LG plasma.

- plasma has a slightly higher refresh rate

- they're heavier obviously

- shows true black

- it holds the picture a little more "solidly" than lcd

- better picture in sizes 42" and above

- etc.

a quick google on "lcd vs. plasma" will bring up loads of reviews.

but with the rapid improvements in technology you'll find it'll be a giant see-saw. one brand will put out the overall best this month, then another next month, then another brand the month after.

like warwick said, unless your a videophile you'll hardly notice the difference.

i personally find the plasma tv a little better on the eyes after extended use, compared to my lcd computer screen. (both LG)

Be warned, if you're getting a plasma, they do wear out and fade. There was a rather big price drop about 2-3 years after plasma TVs started hitting the market because heaps of people noticed that their plasma TV looked crap, retail outlets needed to offload them quicker, particularly their display stock.

That said, plasma do have better contrast then LCD and tend to respond quicker in quick action then LCD (only on larger screens though, expensive smaller LCDs don't have the same problem as the larger ones which sacrifice response for size).

Eug, if you're finding your computer LCD to be a little harsh on the eyes, try turning the brightness down. Adjust the contrast to suit the lower brightness of course.

True, ive seen a few plasmas shit them selfs, thats why i went a hitachi lcd, cant complain with the picture i get, when i was looking around most ppl told me that samsung produce the panels in the majority of new tv's anyway

My 42" Plasma just got delivered today!

My new years resolution this yr was to get one and today I finally did! Was deciding between the Samsung, Panasonic and last minute entry the Hitachi.

I've recently purchased sony x series 46inch lcd, it was voted lcd of the year and now i know why!!

It has full 1080p resolution which will be perfect with the ps3. A little on the pricey side but well worth it! Try JB hi fi.

one of these comments thrown in every single plasma or lcd thread I've ever read.. and I've read a lot!! good luck with that, they were talking about this 2-3 years ago. SED, OLED.. 'magic 3d woosh tv technology' i hear is going to be dropping the price on everything in 5 minutes

p.s. guess what.. LCD's shit themselves too, and have many disadvantages as well - plasma shouldn't be overlooked.

Foamer: you may be best off by telling us what you intend to do with this TV. You want to game on it thats a good start. Do you watch mainly DVD's ? Are you likely to want to watch bluray on it sometime soon? Do you watch during the day or at night? How many hours a day do you watch? what sized room?

For around $3k, a 50" plasma may do you well .. or if you have a smaller room, you might be better suited to a 42" with proper 1080p resolution.

All the reviews I read on the net voted them as the best overall value.

The thing that made me choose Samsung is they have the second lowest failure rate in the category.

Quality means a lot to me, price comes second.

Plazma when launched had a life span of around 60,000 hours use, LCD's first came onto the market with a life round the 100,000 hour mark.

These days many generations of technoligy have passed and you will find each are equal on life/expected life.

As for the price drop, this was caused by the market leaders reseting the ASP's to try and buy more market share from the competitors as they came online with the technoligy. Nothing to do with the quality of the monitors, infact in time that hve only gotten better. As for retailers selling demo stock, most work on a 12 week stock turn in brown goods its the industry standard.

What I mean to say is its no longer an issue.

My Panasonic Plasma has been awesome had it over a year, 3 of my mates have bought LG, all have had the screen fail, one of them has had the replacement screen fail also.

cant understand that. If i was going to buy a LCD screen it would be a Samsung or a Sony Bravia. Samsung produce the highest quality panels out there and are frequently used in other brands TV's... only if they pay the price to use their technology. Take a look at computer LCD's, samsung are the best by a county mile. The sony bravia uses the samsung panels and with their bravia technology as well its a great picture (just make sure you adjust the colours as they are waaaay to vibrant on stock settings, people dont look natural)

The way i understand it is, when they produce the LCD panels they get graded according to how well they came out. The best quality panels go to samsung for their own tv's / computer screens and the not so good ones go to other monitor manufacturers.

Cant go past samsung for quality. I wouldnt buy sony just because i hate the company and have had quite a few bad experiences with their other product lines (ie: car stereo!)

Saying all that.. i have much love for the Plasma. Pioneer plasmas are well worth the extra money. Good long warranty and they will come out and install it for you. If your panel breaks they will give you a replacement while yours is being fixed. The new generation plasmas (i dont know if they are available here yet) have much much better blacks than the previous gen

If you want to run a computer HTPC.. do your research on a place like xpmediacentre.com.au.. some monitors can be a real bitch with computer resolutions...

I have an LG 42" Plasma, i haven't had any problems...'touchwood'... 360 looks great on it so does HD-DVD

i cant recommend lcd enough

i got a 50" sony rear projection lcd (bravia) and its the shit (2 grand from clive peeters)

with lcd, you get better resolutions, so i often hook my laptop up to it (using vga cable) and use the 50" as a computer monitor

awesome for watching media on (moofies, dled tv shows etc)

cant fault the quality at all

plus it works good as a monitor so i work on it as well

i personally wouldnt bother with plasma
