hey i was wondering if it was legal for a p plater to drive a factory (e.g gtst skyline) which had been converted to non turbo engine (e.g rb25de swap) with no illegal mods.

Would this be still a restricted car as the model gtst is banned but it is still a non turbo and not considered high performance v6.

this is mainly a hypothetical question

What a complete waste of time, unless of course you would only consider such a thing so you could still tell your mates you have a 'GTS-T'

As Mars said, save the money, save the hassle, buy yourself a nice GTS and learn to drive.

When I was looking at Skylines I was advised to buy a GTS-t instead of a GTS because making a GTS turbo charged is more expensive than buying the GTS-t in the first place...

But your buying a GTS-t and pracrically making it a GTS. I think the money spend on such a procedure would be a huge waste. Besides, you can buy a GTS and put GTS-t, or even GT-R badges on it, in effect they do the same thing.

But to your question, would it be legal? In my opinion yes, but only you jump through a whole bunch of hurdles that will make your wish you just stuck with a car that is legal for you to drive as standard.

What I would do in your position (and I say this under the assumption that you recently got your Ps and are in the market for a car) is buy a car that is reliable and reletively cheap to run, start saving some cash and who knows? By the time you get off your Ps you might be able to get something better than a GTS-t :)

Modifying the engine is an illegal mod, rendering your entire premise irrelevant.

unfortunately your "opinion" doesn't count as law and isn't a defence when he or anyone else gets reamed. check with the the RTA is the only smart choice but I can tell you with a high degree of certainty that it will NOT be legal.

thats still just what you've interpreted from what you've heard about the new laws, so thats an opinion too isnt it - its not solid info.

he's asking a hypothetical so lets say he's got the car and the parts ready to go.

hypothetically speaking, if he got the work signed off by an engineer (engineers cert.), and told the RTA what he's done because it was cheaper than buying a non turbo car, he might be eligible for an exemption (obviously it wouldnt be cheaper, but for the sake of getting the exemption, thats what he'd say).

the fact of the matter is that the RTA is like any other government authority. there are loopholes around everything.

hey mate it will pass as long as the engine your putting in your car comes from factory in the same family it is OK. (rb25de or rb20de ok as it came from factory NA)

RTA told me this themselves.

also you must change the engine # with RTA and your insurance (coz if you dont and u have an accident u may not be covered) so you gotta do a blue slip again for a full inspection.

cops just check "is it turbo?" they rev it and hear no turbo then they leave you alone unless u got defects etc.

thats still just what you've interpreted from what you've heard about the new laws, so thats an opinion too isnt it - its not solid info.

yes, which is why I said: "the only smart thing to do is check with the RTA" and used words like "my interpretation"...

the only "solid info" you can get is what the RTA states in writing. not what anyone posts as their opinion on a forum. which really makes this topic a complete waste of time.

ok heres the facts for all you critics. if he put a NA version of the motor in his gtst, and takes the new engine number to the RTA and get its swapped over, the car is no longer deemed to be turbo in there records, and thus allowing a P-plater to drive it (that is, assuming a r33 GTS is not on the banned list).

dude i called up the rta myself and this is exactly what they told me. double check just to be sure, but yeh thats the word at the RTA :(.

now whether its worthwhile, probably not, but den again its your money and your time so go for your life mate.

all the best

I was with you till this line...

no such thing.

GT-R? ;)

Completely agree with you, although the RTA web site is a pain to navagate through :)

I just thought if you made such a significant change to a car, you would be required to tell the RTA, thus making the car legal to drive as long as you don't have any performance enhancing mods on the car. Still don't see the point as there are already standard naturally aspirated Skylines out there that are completely legal for a P plater to drive.

It's not just turbo laws it's a power to weight ratio for P platers.

It will say what it is on the RTA site

How I wish this was true...

This is the list of cars that are 6 cylinder and P platers can't drive - Linky

2002 PORSCHE BOXSTER - 1260kg to 162kW - Banned

2003 MAZDA RX-8 - 1337kg to 177kW - Legal

I really want to slap the person who came up with that list... I can't find any logical way of how RX-8s aren't on the list or Porche Boxsters are off the list. Perhaps Porsches do better burn outs...

finding a n/a skyline is impossible

trust me ive been looking for about 2 months

either they want 12-15k for r33

or with r32s with only rb20e version which i dont really want

im mainly looking for a r32 or r33 with an rb25de

ive also seen quiet a few r32 n 33 gtsts selling for 5-7k

it should only cost upto 2k to put in rb25de in gtst.

anyways its a hypothetical quest so i wanted to clarify if it was possible

thx guys. might go talk to rta for myself before getting serious about it.

Did you get it in writing? Or the name and contact details of the person you spoke to?

One thing I've learnt is that there's a world of difference between what is officially enforced, and what some public servant pleb tells you on the phone when they know there's no way you can trace it back to them and hold them liable in court.
