As the title suggests I have got a whining noise after doing a cam belt change, I've removed it and re installed a couple of times. I've also changed the tensioner and idler, all genuine parts. I've eliminated all the other belt driven parts by leaving them disconnected.

Could the belt be too tight or is it something else?

Cheers

did you use genuine nissan - I hear that some of the guys on here have trouble with the gates being a bit noisier.

Its a bitch because if you dont get it right the first time you have to undo the crank bolt again to get the timing cover off right?

Ok it's seems odd that it's over tensioned as it has about 5mm play either side on the intake side and a very small amount, almost none on the exhaust side...

Could it snap if over tensioned, although it has some play in it?

LOL you can keep the bloody ashes :D

I used the technique in the FAQ's for tightening so yes I used the spring, it is really annoying I think I have it tensioned right, to be honest I wouldn't feel right losening it off as it seems right, not sure what to do

thats hard to say. I know with mine it was a bit like - "feels about right" aswell as following the procedure.

I thought I did mine pretty tight but no whining. I know other cars weve had done at the mechanic had a different engine note after the cam belt change - i.e. a bit more whiney

You used nissan belt..i see. Not sure mate.

You could take it to a mechanic to show them the tension. Just take the top cover off outside the garage after youve showed them the noise its making... if youre really concerned.

Well it drives perfectly, just taken her out, noise seems to be getting quiter already? I have got a a slight bit of play in both my exhaust and intake pulleys though which I didnt notice before but I may just be being too fussy, are they supposed to be straight as a dye or is a small amount of play acceptable?

    • I don’t really have any ideas how to set the timing on the CAS 😂, sounds like the top, sounds like it maybe misfiring as well as ticking,  got the box sorted 😌, must of been a air bubble on the clutch side
    • Use a 2' length of hose (that's 2 foot, not 2 inches) as a stethoscope to localise the source of the ticking. From cam covers? From exhaust or turbo manifold gasket? From injectors? From lower down in the engine? Etc. Use a timing light to set the timing. Put Redline Lightweight Shockproof in the box. It's not the very best thing for the box, but it will take a box that refuses to engage a gear with other oil, and make it engage a gear. I had to put it in when I installed the R33 box I have in my car. It would not select ANY gear when running. Smurf jizz made it work. That was >10 years ago and I still use it. I'm stuck with it now. Failing that - rebuild the box.
    • Well done Duncan. The fuel tank bulkhead lid is also in great condition (some of mine were stuffed). These are now out of production and good ones like that are becoming hard to come by.
    • Wow that's a steal, you've done well there.
