After more discussions with the tuner, he called Matt and the reason behind the drop in communication is that there is too much electrical noise and the ECUtalk cable is the issue?? Tuner mentioned that it took him 30mins to change one section of the fuel map in between drops in communication... Now Matt suggested another cable probably the plms? one ($100) and problem solved. I paid $80 for the ECUtalk cable and it has, and I quote the tuner, taken 13hours on the dyno to get a raw tune!!!

I can't believe this shit... Needless to say the car won't be ready until Monday when the cable gets here and I swear it better not take long to get the final tune on it!

It took your tuner 13 hours to realise that the cable was dodgy? He better not be charging you the $200 an hour you quoted for that!

Probably 13 hours is the whole time added up so far which seems excessive

Initially they had write issues because of board installation probs causing errors, and after that the invalid license stopped further tuning, and after that problems with the electrical noise slowing the connection. He was trying to tune whilst it kept slowing down/dropping out because we didnt realise it was having noise issues. Trying to diagnose over the phone can be a bitch ...

If everything is done properly then there are no probs, but this time around has been multiple points of failure with the setup

It will be interesting to see how it goes with your nistune cable, i have one of yours and it is perfect everytime on every car. The only time ive ever had issues is with a 3rd party cable when out helping mates with home tunes etc...

i would bet it is the "other" cable causing issues.

I am using the BLAZT cable (I bought that before I was even thinking Nistune), it works but has issues every now an then.

So when recording a longer log it is mostly a matter of minutes till the connection gets interrupted.

I would recommend buying the cable from Matt, it's money well spend and saves you much headache ..

CRD wants around $1500 installed and tuned

That sounds excessive. I got my nistune supplied, installed and tuned for 770 in my r34 GTT. Dunno if the GTR's are a lot harder to do? Also depends on mods you have done i only had the basics such as FMIC, turbo back exhaust and boost controller

Yeh much the same as me, I got mine done for $550, bought the board for $200 so all up was $750. But my tuner told me mods won't affect the price at all unless they are done badly.

Depends on the value you put on your engine, CRD are known to do good work and can charge accordingly..... Tuning is a fluid thing and can be done good bad or everything in between and the prices generally reflect that.... it also keeps the shit out of your shop.

Agreed - tuning costs are also based on time spent. Doing the mapping for a quick power run is obviously going to take less time than carefully going through everything including idle and off boost drivability

With regards to cables swapping the customers ECUtalk cable for a PLMS one was reported by the tuner to work perfectly afterwards with no drop outs

Last week we put my R34 GTT on the dyno (just got cams fitted... squeezed 301rwkw @ 18psi out of the GT3071R) and was running with a blazt USB cable. We were experiencing several disconnects in the higher rev ranges, so swapped in the PLMS cable and no more dropouts on subsequent runs

I just have to point out that most of the cables out there were based on the original serial version PLMS schematic that was made available to the public and then add a FTDI USB converter chip on top. However Pete has spent many hours since on the dyno and using scopes etc to monitor, isolate and filter the noise which is why there is a significant improvement with data stability in the later version USB cables which have come out

Whilst most cables will work fine for your normal consult display apps (apart from ROM download) where data integrity is important, there is a requirement for nice clean comms signals from the consult port (this includes good grounding on vehicle also)

Hi people,

I've got an R34 GTT tiptronic and want to get a Nistune board and a proper dyno tune. The catch is, I am also looking at doing a manual conversion later on.

Can anyone confirm if a manual conversion requires an ECU swap? Or can the car be run with the auto ECU with just the auto 'logic' disabled?

And what's the go with Nistune, I understand the board is not transmission specific but what about the tune? If I was to retain the auto ECU after the conversion, would the board or tune need to be tweaked to support the manual box?

Thanks guys.

Dont see any problems still running AT image on the board with the manual trans, except you will get AT fault codes.

Since AT/MT should have no difference with fuel/timing maps etc (Trent correct me if I'm wrong here) then tuning shouldnt be affected

Other tables like injection limits, fuel cut/recovery will be different between AT/MT

I would suggest when it comes to MT conversion to get the board reflash the board to a MT image and copy the main maps over from the AT tune

Awesome, thanks Matt.

So it sounds like I should be able to continue using the original auto ECU and the Nistune board after the conversion, and just get the tune tweaked for manual transmission? Sweet!

    • The MX5 has had some annoying rattles in both front doors over bumps So I installed fancy pants door bushings, which stopped all of the rattles with the windows up, but........with the windows down there was still rattles, so after some googling,  and a chat with MX5 Mania, I got some new door to glass weather seals, all the rattles, windows up, or down, are gone now Shout out to MX5 Mania, the weather seals were on sale, and when I head to Dural to pick the up they even fitted them for me for free I did see a "really" nice Blue NA sitting out front   and this Black NC PRHT that looked like it has sat in the sun for its whole life and never had a wash, the clear coat was non-existent, an it looked horrible, really horrible, but, it had a nice turbo kit with over 200kw, the thing went like a cut snake, bagging the rears through the gears and dosing like a champ 😍 But, as I've always stated, I am keeping my NC na, I'm happy with the current power the car makes In other news: MX5 Mania do a drive in drive out turbo kit, the only minor additional part recommended for boosting my car, as it sits now, is a oil cooler, and that bonnet vents are definitely required for track use Aftermarket version look a bit to "racecar" spec I wonder how Focus RS bonnet vents would look?????
    • Paint is only structural when applied to the outside of Chinese and Indian cars. Otherwise it should never be present between mechanical joints that were intended to be metal to metal. Pain slips, slides, cracks, compresses, and add thickness that wasn't intended to be there. It comes firmly under the category of "just no".
