4WD will be quicker off the line in all conditions, with no driving ability required. I would be very surprised if you could floor a RWD Stagea off the mark with no lose of traction... So you have a weight advantage with RWD but you also need to drive it better to make it faster. Not really interested in a RWD myslef, that's why I bought one, so much traction it is ridiculous really.

Untrue. I have an S2 rwd with 186rwkw and i can load up the trans to about 2500 and floor it on the strip, this is on 235 wide tires. the rwd will be quicker in the dry up till about 200-220rwkw and maybe higher. After that the 4wd will have an advantage.

As for differences.

RWD has different suspension and brakes. It matches GC34 and s14 silvia i believe, also an absolute bitch to find brake parts for.

RWD is lighter and is therefore faster in stock trim/mild mods and theoretically more fuel efficient.

mine is rwd and it goes a hell of a lot harder then the awd owns that i have driven. my coilovers are different then my friends awd it is a fun car to drive an it is lighter then his by 120kg

Hey have you got wgc34 specific coilovers or are they s14 or something else?

The whole reason my wife likes the stagea is the AWD - while everyone above keeps taking about 'in the dry' - it is in the wet they are sooooo much better...

good to see that there's some rwd owners out there and thanks for posting all the relevant info! i had trouble deciding between rwd & awd, legendary gtr grip vs a** out fun, when it comes down to it regardless of performance i'm going to have more fun in a rwd car and when its wet ive got traction control and won't be pushing the car any way, its a family car, ive got a 450hp silvia for going fast, it just comes down to what you like and how you like to drive, everyone thinks the car they've got, awd or rwd is the best, its normal, much love to the stag!!!

GorGasm...

Your car seems very similar to the car I'm waiting for. Similar mods etc. Mine has Brembos, but no SAFC and SITC - which I'd love! I'm hoping for a similar 180+rwkW figure! You used the words 'at the strip'. What quarter mile time does your car do? That's the sort of info I've been looking for!

toootaaaalllllyyy

b4 my turbo blew I threw it around some winding narrow country lanes in the greasy wet garnished with cowpat slurry and the car was like it was on rails

all I had to do was keep on winding on the wheel

my guess is it's best to have power on in the turns and just let the awd do the thinking

.. when it comes down to it regardless of performance i'm going to have more fun in a rwd car and when its wet ive got traction control and won't be pushing the car any way, its a family car ...

I've got the rwd r34 skyline, and the awd stagea rs4s. Same engine, turbo etc in both..

So I can tell you - yes you will have traction control. But all that does is take the foot of the gas for you! And you may have already gone sideways a meter! Even with 245/45 tires on the back of my skyline, if I go around a round about in the very wet, and put the foot down even a little bit (not remotely hooning) on the way out, the back will slide..

In the AWD stagea, you don't NEED traction control, as it's like it runs on rails...

Now I agree that sometimes going out and sliding the back of a car around can be fun, years ago I broke 3 back diffs in the one car doing exactly that. However, at night, in the rain, when you aren't expecting it, isn't the time!

So if you are looking for a family car, and one the wife will be happy with, get the AWD. If you want to get a car that you will be driving 100% of the time, and having fun stepping the back out at times, by all means get the RWD..

hey,

Last time i went to the strip i didnt have the FMIC and a slightly different tune. I ran 14.77 with 170rwkws. Im hoping to get a low 14 pass the next time i go.

Ryanismo, check out the jdm/tein streetmaster??? suspension it's grouse, got it in my s2 stag.

Nice handling, smooth/firm ride (dampner adjust) and honestly does handle like it's on rails.

I wont comment on the speed of some corners of taken, but get's around em just as good as a smaller cars like wrx/lancer.

Of course got to have some good rubber holding you down ;).

Has anyone used or heard anything about just japs G4 coilovers for the Stag, are they any good??

Mine gets 420km a tank city driving. 98' S2 Turbo 4WD, although mindfull not to go into boost too

much and drive like a normal person not reving past 3500 that much:)

A lot of start stop driving in Melbourne's east.

Although watch that quickly drop to 250-300 if you get happy feet :)

Can still hang the end out on awd, flick of the wheel bit of pedal to the floor at the right time, just dont use the 4WD button. Although makes you a little nervours with the weight factor, that it might just keep goin sideways.

just want to find out everything about rwd stagea, differences between 4wd and rwd, suspension diff etc etc whatever you know would be great, any other rwd turbo stagea owners out there???

:thanks::banana:

get an awd and when u want some drift action remove the front driveshaft (about a 10 min job and 4 bolts) and its ready to go :thanks: I bought the stagea for the reason it had awd as i had big plans power wise and my last car with this engine in 2wd was a waste of time it was slower than cars with half the power lol

What was your last car???

I've owned 2 RWD R33 Turbos and with less weight, more power and decent sussie and rubber... and a wise ankle angle, I don't see how a far less powerful car could outrun you!

not a skyline, it was a vl calais with rb26 and 360rwhp and it was useless for traction, i have plenty of mates with rwd cars and 350-450hp at wheels and they are useless from slow speeds against awd with similair power. I realise from 80kmh+ the 2wd will be ok but most runs are done from a stop or slow rolling speeds.

different horses for different courses

i second that.

no good having heaps of power if it aint gonna stick to the road and get ya moving.

i luv 4wd, especially in the wet.

power isnt everything... the way power comes on is a big factor... a car with 200kw, but a nice linear power graph will eat say a 250kw car with a laggy setup.

that said though, 600hp limter launches with AWD is good fun!

after having a RWD, and now AWD car.. i'd take the AWD every time..

Wouldnt a RWD S2 use a GTS-T box to start with? I know they make an auto RWD.

From all ive heard you can always tell when a car has been converted from auto to manual... Never quite right. But who buys a stag or a legnum and wants 2WD anyway.....?

    • Also had a look at the Nissan JP website looks like the 400r has a slightly shorter ratio than than the regular V37 3.133 VS 2.937 which from a guy who has driven both 3.69 vs 4.11 ratios in the S15 is bugger all. Seems that the AUTO Z runs the same ratio as the 400R but can't find any info as to if its an open or LSD? More often than not the auto LSD is open
    • Do not replace the power steering lines with this stuff. If it's anything like the Chase Bays stuff it will leak and be worse than stock. The reason why the reservoir is on the LH/passenger side of the car is because that's just where the reservoir was most convenient to fit. Don't overthink this stuff. The intake/cold side of the engine is pretty busy on these cars. And again, the hardpipe is designed to be a janky power steering cooler. In theory you can replace it with a real power steering cooler but that's really only for track use where boiling the fluid is a distinct possibility. Start with the low pressure lines feeding the pump from the reservoir. Make sure there isn't a bunch of junk in the reservoir filter. Be careful to not get ATF all over the engine bay. I hate dealing with ATF spills, you can clean it up and the slightest crevice will still release more oil that can still drip over time. You also want to inspect for leaks before you make a mess and can't tell what happened. Most likely you have a leak somewhere that is allowing fluid out and air in. Failing that it's allowing air in but not fluid out. Only place I can really see that happening is on the low pressure side because the pump will pull a slight vacuum to draw fluid in. Everything after the pump is high pressure or lower pressure, approaching atmospheric by the time it returns to the reservoir.
    • I did a skidpan night at SMSP this week, it was much cheaper than $350. But yeah, you need to slap an LSD in that thing.  I put an OS Giken in the 370Z and it's f**king MARVELOUS even compared to Nissan's viscous LSD. So you're saying it's free now that it's a housing estate? 😂
    • Nah, the car seems to run exactly as it did prior, in saying this it does "seem" to be better down low, like more eager to rev, but that may be 100% placebo effect from intake noise But, I'm not worried about it at all, in the end it is a fairly low compression NA engine that has a well shrouded intake,  if it is getting hotter IAT I cannot notice anything negative performance wise from the seat of my pants thrashing it about on the street or sitting in traffic, so meh, car now now makes induction noise so I'm happy
    • Do you have an IAT sensor? It's worth checking it to see. You may be suprised how little gap you actually need to flood your engine with hot air. (I tape up my airbox for a reason) :p
