After a couple of long trips in the skyline i have found the need for a cruise control unit.Investigated the aftermarket options & found that about $800 would have one installed. :( Also found that the vacuum units are not that good so it would have to be fully electronic. Then thought about modifying a cruise control module to work in the skyline!

Checked out how the holden VP-VR ones work & this is what i've come up with.

My understanding of how the module works is that it gets a signal from the VSS, when told to hold that signal(SET) it starts to control the output cable forward or back to get the same signal from the VSS as it was SET at.

The Res+ & Dec- only ask for a preset increase/decrease in the set signal.

Just interested to see if anyone has managed to adapt a vn-vr cruise control module to run in there skyline?

From what i can gather they require the following electrical connections:

1.Ground

2.12v+

3.Speed signal-back of gearbox

4.On/Off -connected in series with the brake peadl switch, & mounted on dash

5.Res + -am/fm button on dash

6.Dec- -scan button on dash

7.Cruise Control on light, mounted next to switchs

8.Cruise in use light, mounted next to switchs(maybe have a dual color LED instead of 2 seperate LED's)

9.Incorporate a switch on the clutch pedal into cancel/resume for gear changes while in cruise control.(Going up steep hills & going down hills)

I'm thinking about doing this and using the radio buttons on the dash as the Res+ & Dec- buttons then mounting a standby/in use/off light.

Taking the speed signal from the back of the gearbox.(May need to be convereted)

Can anyone with any experience or electrical knowledge help with this please?

Not trying to be cheap here just after a great DIY that others may also be interested in & maybe stop a lot of accidental speeding fines.

Can pick up the module & cable from a wreckers for $150, then make up a connection to mount onto the current throttle bracket.

Bit of soldering & wiring ,mount the module & there we have it Cruise Control.

Will attempt to scan the schematics later if that will help anyone.

Those interested please PM or E-mail [email protected]

Thanks All will update this thread with any relevant info.

I fitted a Rostra Electronic cruise control on my R33 then pulled it off and fitted on my R34. Got it from Electric Life in Melbourne. Had for 4-5 years and never missed a beat.

Gotta have one, like you say to stop those speeding fines!

do you know what the pulse rate for the GM item - it will be VERY different.. to do it correctly you will need to mimic the ladder network of the stalk. the buttons on the dash are (skyline) a ladder network also. get the speed right , inputs right and it will work get it wrong - nada.

feel free to ask questions ;)

    • Oh man what a deal.... Funny enough (well not really) I sold a car to some old dude (buying for his Daughter) on a Saturday, He asked if she could take the car now and pay me the money on Monday as the bank wasn't open. Needless to say I told them to come back with the cash or get f**ked! Luckily the money seemed to magically appear in his pocket a few minutes later, so it all ended well (for me).
    • Gucci bags tend to hold their value well, so someone’s definitely going to get a nice find here.
    • @Ozdavroz Not going to get a better deal than that. Cash up front and ongoing payments. 🤑
    • I wouldn't even move it like gTSBoy is saying. I'd seriously do what Duncan is saying. Unplug the injectors, and unplug the fuel pump.  Pull the spark plugs out. Have a look in quickly with a bore scope if you want. At most, you can't spray a bit of oil into the bores so there is lubricant in there while you crank it. (Don't fill it, as it's only going to enter the exhaust, or spit at you out the spark plugs holes. Before cranking the engine on the starter, after a 5 year sit I'd probably prime the oil system manually. Easiest way to do so is to look at buying an oil filter relocation block, fit it to the engine. The pressure line going into the engine on this block you can then shove into some sort of oil pump, or put it into a bottle, with that hose going to the bottom. Fill bottle up with oil. Now seal the bottle and add a compressed air line to the top of the bottle. Feed compressed air in, about 20psi will be PLENTY. This will pump oil through the motor. Be aware, it also means it will drain back to the sump, so make sure you don't end up over filling the motor Now bolt the old oil setup back on (or fully install the remote filter system).   This way you've at least pushed fresh oil everywhere, then you're letting the motor crank to then do its own oiling. Then I'd tap the key to make sure it can start to crank, if the motor free bumps, then I'd just hit the key and let it crank. After letting it crank and seeing you can get real engine oil pressure, put new spark plugs in, reconnect the fuel system electrics, and send it.   Additionally, you can look to remove the fuel feed line to the rail, and divert it to a tank so you can get the bottom of the tank shit out, and just incase there's some crud sitting anywhere that gets passed the fuel filter (or is already ahead of it).   If fuel injection at the injectors ends up appearing to be a problem, you can dump the injectors into an ultrasonic cleaner for a quick flush clean out. Note this isn't as good as new injectors, or getting them pro cleaned and flowed
    • All I can say is, that's still bloody awesome! No plans on caging it I'm guessing?
