Hi Guys,

I have an R32 GTS that was stolen and recovered a while ago.. I did the whole rb20det swap while I was getting it back on the road.. Like most guys, I opted for a warlboro intank pump thinking it would do the job..

Well, About 6 months to the day I got it going again, the pump gave up the ghost just after it had been for its newest WOF (warrant of fitness here in NZ).. The car is my dailydriver so I had to pool all my money together and commit to overkilling the fuel system!

As a bit of a background, I make alloy car/industrial products/tig weld for a living, so I made the surge tank in house.. It was just sitting idle not finished (no mounts or a mount for the pump) when the original pump decided to go chug chug bang.

So, I purchase a Bosch 044 External from a trade electronic supply local to me ($325 +gst), 4 meters of 5/16" fuel hose (8mm) and my auto electronic mate wired it up for me..

I used a standard rb20de fuel pump as the lift pump.. this is still wired from the factory wiring, the trigger for this pump also triggers the bosch via a relay. I had doubts at first that it was keeping the tank full.. but it definitly is..

This tank was made by me when I first started welding (about 8 mnths ago)

Fittings are standard 3/8"bspt, using a speedflow -8 male weldon on the bottom (rewelded a new one after I dropped the tank landing on the taper, stuffing the fitting!)

It goes from speedflow -8male to -8female to -8 female coupler then to -8 male to m16x1.5 on the pump..

I needed the pump to connect to standard skyline fittings, I can't afford to convert the whole system to -6 from the pump to the rail at the moment, so I got a m14x1.5 to -6 adaptor and welded an 8mm nipple onto a -8 cap.. works great.

I'll never outflow this system and it is definitly overkill.. but i'm happy.

The tank is constructed out of 100x100x3mm alloy, 3mm base/top/bottom..

The spacer lugs / base are temp for the moment till I can afford an inline -8 filter, then I'll remake the base again with that filter.. I'm also going to put a proper grommit where the lines come through the body, they are sealing fine now.. but I want to be able to trust it.. it's just temp for the moment!

all looks nice n neat, only bad thing i see is that the earth wiring is red, wont make anything run any different but i prefer to keep my earth wires black and positive red.

Hi, The negative wiring is red with a black conduit on the outside of it, you just cant see it because it's "taped" with loom tape.. The setup works really well, just to tidy it up more to my liking i'll extend all the wiring and hide it when I redo my boot lining (The car was stolen and strippd a while back, bastards!)

Also, while thinking about it, this setup works flawlessly.. I had my doubts at first that the non turbo pump could handle the jandle.. I used to get really bad surge/cutouts when doing donuts at the burnout comps here, it's rather embarrasing.. now I get none of this, car skids like it should do..

Just wish the tyres would last longer or I had more power so I can do 3rd :happy: damn rb20det!

I really think this is a worthwhile investment for anyone that's pushing a bit of power or is smart about reliability.. Basic outlay was for the pump ($325+GST NZD) and 4meters of fuel hose ($40 NZD).. If I had more money I'd go braided lines.. as it stands I'm remaking the main fuel line from tank > engine bay out of larger stainless steel piping so I can go -8 from tank to engine.. it's way overkill, but oh well!

same in regard to wires, heres a pic of mine.

Ive lost count of how many hours ive put into it, i bought the surge tank but made the rest ;)

not finished yet, gotta polish it all etc

is that safe with the fuel so close to the battory

im putting a fibrglass cover between the 2 battories i have in the boot and the old lpg bottle i turned into a surge tank by braising a few fittings on it well c how it goes

what u using 4 a pick up pump

    • Here's one I help build and tuned a decade ago, Garrett  GTX3071R Gen 1, T3 twin scroll 0.83 rear housing. Went from larger 272 cams down to smaller Tomei Poncams to help with the low end. S13 non VCT motor. Car was purpose built for the track, hence low down was the focus. Note the actual dyno chart shows lower boost, however the EBC and boost gauge showed 1.9Bar (Ignore the torque, I was young and didn't know how to set derived torque)  
    • I’m doing some side developments on SR20det S13 engines, its one my hobby cars used it to compare flow capacity of some smaller size wheels. SR20det is one of another JDM legendary engines I'm sure there are plenty of SR enthusiasts on this forum, I will share results some common turbo configurations here. a quick run down of what the car is: Wide body 180sx Type X with black top engine (blue). It has: Stock bottom end Haltech 1500 ECU 5-0 motorsports trigger kit Kelford SR20DET Beehive Spring with Titanium Retainers Kelford Cams SR20DET S13 188-B 268/272 Cams G25-660 Turbocharger in T2 .64 rear housing internally gated ARP Head studs MLS head gasket 1000CC ID injectors Walbro 450L Fuel pump Front mount cooler kit JJR’s 3 inches turbo back exhaust (its too short for the 180sx it had to be extended) Pump 98 fuel Hub Dyno tune So far made 270rwkws at 22psi full boost by 4500RPM. Engine is very knock limited hence a pretty bad looking top end. From previous experiences it seems like SR20dets are happier with bigger size turbine, some thing like a GT30 would make way better top end, but on same time response is lost. It won't be a problem with S15 VCT engines. I'll be testing alternative turbine housing, turbine wheel and possibly dump pipe options for extra flow to resolve the problem and of course E85 would resolve all the issues.

    • Wow the colour matched hard top completely transforms the car. Are there any nice front lip options for the car or is that off the table?
    • Generally yes but for some reason I've been ruthless this time around!  I might even need to do another tip run after the way I've finally been able to hit the delete button on shit I've stepped over, stepped around and tripped over for the past 10 years!
