Hi guys,

I know there's been plenty of FMIC posts on here, but I'm looking for an intercooler that has the return outlet on the same side as the intake so that I can connect it up to the standard piping.

I know its been done before, I just dont know what products do this, and where to get them from and how much.

If anyone could help out here that'd be great.

The problem I see with most of the ones on here is that it involves cutting away at the chassis etc. and making the car not only illegal (irrepairably) but also unsafe.

I dont want to do any cutting, I just want something that will give me more cooling than the standard S2 smic and can support say up to 200awkw with efficient cooling.

If I cant get one with the return on the same side, is it possible to run piping either behind or under (not sure if this is legal either)? The reason I want it legal (or as close to legal as possible) is because FMIC's are very visible from the outside and I'd rather not hafta worry about stuff like that :ninja:

The s2 smic will do well, but even at 160awkw I feel that it gets too hot too quickly and the car has much less responsiveness after about 20 mins of driving. I'm putting it down to intake temps getting too high.

Any thoughts on what FMIC to buy? I'm hoping for a really easy installation (part of the reason I want to use the standard piping). And also hoping to get one installed for under $600 - is this possible?

cheers

easy

Apexi GT Hybrid intercooler

half tube/fin half bar/plate

is a return air feed type cooler, generally made for the 180sx

apexi have since taken the product off their website so I cant link you to it

post-18854-1188796072.jpg

you'll find them on ebay or yahoo auctions

Mine came from ebay Japan, paid around $250USD for it, plus $100USD for a aluminium 3" pipe kit, plus 3-ply silicone joiners from JustJap (half price to autobarn, blue TermalPly brand, not the cheap red shit in the above pic) and expensive bolt style hose clamps from an irrigation place (using 2x clamps per join). All up would have come to $600aud I guess, plus my time to install it all.

Didnt have to cut a thing from the car, just that I cut the dayz front bar where the numberplate sits, to open her right up. Obviously cut the pipe kit to suit.

ARC do a great performing smic

Trust and Blitz make a return air feed unit, looking at a grand for either of these options. Apexi ftw !!!!

as for performance, the apexi is all good for at least 220rwkw.

Yeah Blitz do one. I think Trust do one as well.

Its a BLITZ TYPE M, I just bought one from Japan about 1 week ago.

Return flow, piping runs to 1 side, 3 layer intercooler.

Good size cooler to, would be about 600x300x7X, but not to sure on specifics.

theres a guy on here selling an ARC cooler, for an rb25det, and it uses the stock pipe location.

950 dorra.

Not a bad price for a new ARC kit.

Probably worth considering.. I would have if I didnt buy my BLiTZ one.

Hmm thats all looking a tad expensive. I was thinking I could get away with it for say $300-400 for the kit and a couple hundred for piping & joins/hoses etc.

Any more info on these water spray thingy's. Chances are I could probably get away with just maximizing the efficiency of the stock one. Whilst searching I came across the old R34 GTT SMIC upgrade thread (for series 1's) and SK mentioned that the only about 30% of the air travelling into the front duct will hit the intercooler (or something like that). Also there was a mention that the intercooler will get a fair bit of oil buildup inside it (not sure if this will reduce its effectiveness).

Wondering if I should just look into a water spray setup and/or more efficient redirecting of air - as I reckon this could bring some good results.

Getting more power isn't really my aim right now, as I'd need to upgrade my fuel system (pump, injectors/fpr) to handle any more than I have anyway. I just notice that the car performs great and very responsive when it first warms up and after a while feels like its struggling to make power. Last summer on 30+ deg days the car would feel very sluggish. Is a FMIC even that effective in summer?

Yes the water spray makes a big difference, the trick is to

a) stop the water draining out the nozzle (the resivior will be above the outlet so you will need an anti-syphon set up)

b) some way of activating it. Either temperature or throttle position would be my pick.

As for the air supply issue with the S2 cooler on a S1 - the easiest way to get around that problem is to get the R34 GTsT ducting and cut to suit. I looked into all this quite closely right up until I smashed my car :) but I came to the same conclusions you seem to.

This seemed the best option I could find, but if you are good with electronics you could probably come up with something similar yourself (I'm not and I couldn't :) )

This kit sounds great in theory but there's no way I'd be capable of installing it. :)

However, it should be possible to hook up a manual system to do a similar job. All this controller does is automatically spray the intercooler when the temperature difference between ambient (intake) and throttle body reaches a certain point.

If nothing else it proves that spraying water on the intercooler can dramatically improve its cooling efficiency.

It does also beg the question...even if I paid someone $200 to install it, I'd still come out significantly cheaper than a big fmic with the same effect. :)

although I'd hafta top up the water every now and then but it doesn't sound like it uses enough to be of any concern. I have a rainwater tank too for anyone that is wondering if this water usage is necessary

Blitz and Trust do make an FMIC each, but I doubt you'd get one in for your $600 target, unfortunately.

I do believe that they're both a return-type cooler, which is perfect for your application (and, eventually, mine too), but you should CONFIRM this before you order, if this is the way you end up going...

Blitz part #: 12331

Trust GReddy part #: 12020467

I'm sure ARC make one as well, but I can't find the info on their site.

Im going an ARC FMIC using stock pipes, there are 2 which I think will fit, the R34 (M073ER34F06) and R33(M073ER33FM06) one. Both available from NENGUN.

http://www.arcinter.co.jp/arc/products/int...nissan/er34.pdf

http://www.arcinter.co.jp/arc/products/int...issan/ecr33.pdf

http://www.arcinter.co.jp/arc/products/int...ont/nissan.html

the R34 has a return pipe on the rear and the R33 return is on the bottom, also the R34 is 600mm long compared to 470mm for the R33.

Hopefully the pipes and brackets wont need too much work to align them, if anyone has fitted these to their Stagea please inform us.

nobody has mentioned water to air intercoolers!

they CAN be expensive.. but from what I understand fairly easy to fit.. and of course depending where you mount it ( they dont need airflow ) totally invisible.

they have a pump and a small radiator style core PWR do one if I remember correctly.

could be worth a go .

yeh either that or the water spray kit.

    • Also had a look at the Nissan JP website looks like the 400r has a slightly shorter ratio than than the regular V37 3.133 VS 2.937 which from a guy who has driven both 3.69 vs 4.11 ratios in the S15 is bugger all. Seems that the AUTO Z runs the same ratio as the 400R but can't find any info as to if its an open or LSD? More often than not the auto LSD is open
    • Do not replace the power steering lines with this stuff. If it's anything like the Chase Bays stuff it will leak and be worse than stock. The reason why the reservoir is on the LH/passenger side of the car is because that's just where the reservoir was most convenient to fit. Don't overthink this stuff. The intake/cold side of the engine is pretty busy on these cars. And again, the hardpipe is designed to be a janky power steering cooler. In theory you can replace it with a real power steering cooler but that's really only for track use where boiling the fluid is a distinct possibility. Start with the low pressure lines feeding the pump from the reservoir. Make sure there isn't a bunch of junk in the reservoir filter. Be careful to not get ATF all over the engine bay. I hate dealing with ATF spills, you can clean it up and the slightest crevice will still release more oil that can still drip over time. You also want to inspect for leaks before you make a mess and can't tell what happened. Most likely you have a leak somewhere that is allowing fluid out and air in. Failing that it's allowing air in but not fluid out. Only place I can really see that happening is on the low pressure side because the pump will pull a slight vacuum to draw fluid in. Everything after the pump is high pressure or lower pressure, approaching atmospheric by the time it returns to the reservoir.
    • I did a skidpan night at SMSP this week, it was much cheaper than $350. But yeah, you need to slap an LSD in that thing.  I put an OS Giken in the 370Z and it's f**king MARVELOUS even compared to Nissan's viscous LSD. So you're saying it's free now that it's a housing estate? 😂
    • Nah, the car seems to run exactly as it did prior, in saying this it does "seem" to be better down low, like more eager to rev, but that may be 100% placebo effect from intake noise But, I'm not worried about it at all, in the end it is a fairly low compression NA engine that has a well shrouded intake,  if it is getting hotter IAT I cannot notice anything negative performance wise from the seat of my pants thrashing it about on the street or sitting in traffic, so meh, car now now makes induction noise so I'm happy
    • Do you have an IAT sensor? It's worth checking it to see. You may be suprised how little gap you actually need to flood your engine with hot air. (I tape up my airbox for a reason) :p
