hey all

about to install my oil cooler my self and have the oil filter relocater but want to no if i can put it in upside down so that its less messy for oil changes and what not.. also its going to be sitting higher then it does on the engine will this pose a problem at all. and finnally with an 11 row oil cooler how much more oil is the rb25 going to need???

the only problem i see with having the oil filter upside down is that when you turn your car off the oil will rush out of it. this means that when you turn your car back on, you'll be running without oil pressure for a while before the oil filter fills up (around 600ml worth).

if you insisted on having it upside down i'd suggest having a loop in both the feed and return hoses to stop oil from rushing away from the filter when you turn the car off.

for eg, the feed line to the oil filter would look like this:

the distance at a) should be as short as possible so oil rushes up to the oil filter and starts getting distributed quickly.

mines upside down attached to the block .. so id hope so... however I do start my car and the oil gauge doesnt move for about 3 seconds .. this normal?

this is the point im trying to make. most of the filters that suit these oil relocators are off commodores (not jap) and are pretty big. alot of the ones made here, like the justjap ones, use filters off commodores.

its not normal to have no oil pressure for 3 seconds. mine fires up almost instantly.

pretty much any filter i've used had a drain back valve. and min is intalled that way (ie hole points down). it's not fool proof though, some oil still comes out when you take it off.

The filter you are referring to (the Ryco Z145A or equivalent) is off an RB30 motor, so VL Commodores & R31 Skylines. It is larger that the "proper" Nissan item, but if you have had a good look at the Nissan item (I have a spare at home) you end up thinking "Yuck, not going to use that". Or similar sounding words. The larger filter is better in that it can hold more filth before it degrades in performance. Downside is that they are a pain in the arse to fit past the HICAS unit.

Just about every filter you can buy has an anti drain back valve. It is just a bit of rubber that stops the oil draining out fron the filter. In any case filters are basically just paper/cardboard so I can't for the life of me figure out what all the fuss is about.

couldn't you just turn it upside down so the the filter screws up from underneath. i'd say that would cause less mess then removing the filter than having the filter screw up from the top. even if you have to mount it down off a chassis rail so you can get to it easily from under the car while you are taking the sump plug out.

i thought that was his original question, can he mount it upside down as in the filter's thread pointing up, so when you unscrew it, it's full of oil but held in a way so it won't spill out...I've always wondered this - it would save having to hold a rag under the filter when you unscrew it.

That's what I've done with my relocator/oil filter and it's made for some of the easiest/cleanest oil changes I've ever done! Mine's not mounted in the engine bay either, so very easy to have a tray or something underneath it and oil doesn't get on anything else :yes:

i thought that was his original question, can he mount it upside down as in the filter's thread pointing up, so when you unscrew it, it's full of oil but held in a way so it won't spill out...I've always wondered this - it would save having to hold a rag under the filter when you unscrew it.

yes that is my original questionsimple turning it 180deg so its upside down... which i will do so on the weekend when i install. just to add to the convo i was given a honda z160 oil filter however im going to use a ryco z30 which yes is off a commodore however it does look to be the same size as the nissan filter i have on there now

you could fix that by running some 900 fittings from the plate. it will minimise the amount of oil thats left in the hose.

if the filter is mounted strait up like threads are pointing down to keep oil from coming out when removing the filter u can take a screwdriver and puch a hole on top of the filter before u remove it. this will allow pressure to leave the filter allow oil to flow out and u can remove the filter with no mess! i did that on my old setup on my sr20, worked perfect!

ruff but afective. i think i was just being too picky as it is by far the best way and depending on here the relocator was mounted it would be easy cleaned anyway.

    • Wish I had this advice when I did my pump. It went in and out 3 or 4 times, and on the last time it snapped.
    • Tried them, they leaked. I also foolishly bought some random rubber ones that leaked too.  Genuine and not looked back.    As always though sample size of one, and I could have made a mistake installing them. 
    • Technically still manual process to set it first time though
    • Shit job but not hard. I'd use a piece of wood to knock the plastic lid open to avoid damaging it, use a vacuum to clean up the fuel sender lid also so crap doesn't fall in. I'd probably do pump and filter at the same time since you're already in there, I reused my OEM sock after a quick clean since the one provided wasn't long enough. Could also hardwire your pump if you feel inclined.

Sadly I've removed the pump about 75,000 times over the years. I don't know if you're a large lad or a smaller lad but my advice to you as someone who is 185cm is if you are my height or smaller, is to sit in the boot and take your time. Yes you can put the seal on. The seal goes over the white thing/lid (you will see how it 'slots' in) then the whole assembly presses into the tank. then you screw the lock ring on. I spent so much time doing things the wrong way by trying to mount the seal into the tank first, then putting the white fuel hat on in the space provided. Put it together first then it'll all go in. But seriously be careful about removing the hoses AND where the removal tool is moving relative to the plastic pipes coming out of the lid when you've removed it. IT IS BRITTLE So brittle in fact I have two spare lids, and would recommend buying a spare and having it handy before attempting to do this. You may need to/strongly recommend you re-use your OEM fuel sock or use the one supplied with a length of hose so it sits at the stock height.
