Hi Guys,

Need your opinions to help me decide on my next car. The main prerequisite is a car that I will enjoy DRIVING EVERYDAY. I'm not planning to start a family anytime soon so it does not matter how many doors or seats it has. I don't play golf therefore boot space is not a concern. A budget of $60k-80k. It will also see track days 4 to 5 times a year.

Again not in order of preference.

VW Golf R32

I like the fact its an AWD with DSG and a decent engine. Has the best interior and built quality of the bunch.

2008 Lancer Evolution X

AWD + Turbo + Twin Clutch. Brand new 2008 model car.

02/03 Porsche Boxster S

One of the most capable chassis. 3 times MOTOR performance car of the year. It's a Porsche.

R34 GTR Vspec

Well, it's a GTR for a start! and a R34 Vspec is always one of the most desirable GTRs in anyone's book.

I have said some of the positive aspects. Now I would like to hear from you, what do you like and dislike about each one of these cars. and which would you realistically pick given the budget.

Regards

- VW Golf R32 is a good car, but a bit expensive for what it is.

- Porsche Boxster S is an entry model, and only bought for its name.

- I thought the EVO X will be selling for $100k+?

- R34 GTR Vspec, awesome car but think about its resale value once the new GTR comes out. (could drop etc)

My opinion, get a brand new car

Get a 6.1L v8 300c with brembo brakes :whistling:

or

this which i just found,

limited edition F6 (300 avail)

Boxster S

it's not an "entry level Porsche" which only bought for its name, it's a 3.2L MR convertible!

maybe Golf R32? but I reckon the Golf Gti is good enough

then R34 GTR, then Evo...

Any of u guys actually driven an evo???

Livable on a daily basis?? yer if u like the lack of down low torque mixed with a laggy turbo... not a good combo for daily driver

and how isnt the boxster entry level???its the crappest cheapest one of the lot.. of course its entry!

why is that a problem if you daily drive it? when you daily drive a car you drive it normal, your not boosting it all over the place tring to get to the place in the fastest time

Golf GTi won best australian sports car under $60,000 + other awards.

Much popular over the R32 in terms of sales.

r34 gtr is not an easy car to drive daily by any means. clutch is heavy and its not designed for everyday street driving...evo is much more practical and easy in that respect. lag isn't an issue if your driving in town or in the suburbs

dont know much about r32 golf but have read about it and it seems the goods.

i'd say it'd be between the boxter and the evo. I'd personally go the evo as its good and practical for everyday with the option for more power if you want it. i'd imagine the boxter will be hard to extract more balls out of and hella expensive.

go the evo...looks *hawt* and its brand spankers.

The 300C goes well if you get the one with the big engine, but handles like crap. it's a massive car after all.

if it were me, i'd take one of each for a drive

17 votes for the GTR a clear winner so far. only drawback for me is as some already mentioned "r34 gtr is not an easy car to drive daily by any means. clutch is heavy and its not designed for everyday street driving" although Im not too concerned with a heavy clutch but being in a R34GTR means every kids on the road will try to race you plus you will have to be very selective on where you park the car in public. whereas for the other three you can comfortably leave in a shopping centre carpark to watch a movie or grocery shopping.

EVO X was rumoured to retail around $70-80k. still within my budget. We will know for sure at the sydney motor show.

as for the 300C I like the engine but not really fond of its size.

    • Thanks for that Paul.  Do you think if I posted a picture you'd be able to remember where it went?
    • Sorry Duncan, I didn't get a notification for the replies.  Thanks for responding!  It's a full Android device, but does allow you to use CarPlay/AA as well.  This is the one I bought from NaviRS on AliExpress: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006368602668.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.111.59aa1802JDzQ0E - the 2K 8G-256G CAM variant but it seems to have gone up by £170 since I bought it!  My purchase was £307.14.   It's not the fastest thing in the world but performs perfectly adequately.  It stays on standby unless I disconnect the battery and let it power down, then it's just a fairly standard Android bootup time from cold.  The DSP Equaliser is very nice and made the standard stereo system sound pretty decent compared to the stock screen.  Perhaps I can take a video of it when I get a sec. It *allegedly* supports the reverse camera, but I'm yet to get that working.  It has options for reverse cam (a camera unit can be bought separately) or 360 cameras (also bought separately).  To be fair it doesn't seem to detect that the shifter was put into reverse but I'm working on a theory about this as well.  At the moment I'm going without which is a bit annoying considering the car is an absolute canal barge but so far I haven't caused any damage I'll grab a picture of the wire I'm missing later today when I can get outside.  My theory, by the by, is that not only is the head unit different, but the CANBUS network has different signals for the different years.  I think this because I have a spare AC panel from a newer Infiniti G37 (as opposed to my Nissan panel) which wouldn't control anything except the volume when I had it wired up with the stock system.  I'm going to throw it back in and see if the screen will respond to it.  I've just ordered an arduino CANBUS module so I can have a look at the signals going around the car and see if I can spot anything.  I'm thinking if I can work out what it's expecting vs what it's getting I might be able to translate and relay the signal back but so far just a theory anyway. I also found this on my travels, so far the only one that specifically matches my car: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002822934280.html?spm=a2g0s.imconversation.0.0.33433e5fgttovi If you look at the picture of the before, it has the card reader slot, and the picture of the head unit is exactly the same as the one pictured in my original post.  I asked if they sell the cables separately but sadly they won't.  I didn't want to just buy this one because it's a super old Android version and only dual core - likely slow as hell.
    • As above, you did refill the coolant and burp the system before running it again didn't you?
    • To be fair - you see the same thing for every clutch. There's always someone making an installation error.
    • Just saw this, redacted names. It's on a R33 GTS-t Facebook group. Looks like still teething issues.
