Hey all, I won't lie to you I'm fairly young compaired to some of you old times. stereotypical some of you would think that I'm just another young punk, thinking he's hot sh!t and thinks that he knows everything. Well....I'll put it straight to you....I don't know sh!t. I mean I've been looking around the forums for quiet a fair while and can't pickup most of what you all are talking about, but im learning . Honest to god I only jumped onto these forums because of my sheer passion for these cars. Unlike some of my fellow generation I don't want to show off (Idiotonemia) or go fast (especially because I'm such a young inexperienced driver (again in comparison to the old timers which I have tremendous respect for ). Yeah, of course everyone wants to go fast, (Safety first people) which brings me to my problem. Im looking to purchase one of these awesome beasts, however it seems that my wise father sees that they have protential to be quiet dangerious to inexperienced drives such as myself. So to the wise men (and wemon if there are any on here) of your excellent forums is this (Please don't laugh if there isn't a device that does such a thing, remember I R NOOB)

Is there any way that you (or in this case my father) can limit the speed of a car, other than buying a slow car?

Buy one with a factory computer, it will only do 180km/h that way.

Or you could get an aftermarket rev limiter fitted. If it can only rev to 4k you have a max speed of ~140 in 5th (for an R33 anyway).

It will not make for an exciting drive (speed wise). But shouldn't effect daily street driving.

Aside from learning how to drive? A car only goes as fast as the driver makes it go. Even RH9, which makes 1100hp at all four wheels, can do a whopping ZERO kilometres an hour if the driver chooses to.

If your father is after some kind of electronic nanny solution, I believe some engine management systems allow you to set a speed limiter. Alternatively, rev limiting you (which can be done on most standalone ECUs) means you can only go as fast as that RPM in top gear.

If you've got a turbo car, your father could make sure you don't mod the powertrain (aside from the above ECU tweaks) so you're not making more power. Then do stuff that kills power (like tuning the ECU for economy instead of power) to pull the car down in speed.

Alternatively, you can get some GPS/tracker systems which SMS' back to base (or a mobile) when speed thresholds are exceeded. It won't stop you from speeding, but your old man can know immediately when you do and give you a very angry phone call...followed by a grounding or something.

Any of this stuff can be circumvented, of course, for someone suitably motivated to figure out how.

As above a auto r32 gts will keep you out of trouble as it has only about 115kw 2.0lt vs a ED Falcon that has 140kw

If your dad is foolish enough to think that it only takes FI to make a car quick then he'll be appeased by it and the AWD drivetrain.

yeah i also am a young skyline lover and had the same problem with my father, i got the r33 gts4, if you cant convince him even to let you get that, then let him drive it, works like a charm

I mostly agree. Those first couple of lines are unlikely to change a persons opinion though. The best way to show that you are trustworthy is to extend trust to him. Do this by giving him a test-drive of the car you are interested in and get his opinion. Stick to what he says even if it is not favourable, because arguing will never win anybody over. You can try a different tact next time if you don't win him over the first time around. The more he sees that you trust him, the more likely he is to trust you.

Buy something cheap to purchase and run and maintain which is also slow, as your first car.

Drive around in it, do your stupid shit in that car (because inevitably you will. guarantee it.), then look at getting something nice a bit later.

Im not saying you need to wait ten years before getting something better, but for your first year or two behind the wheel, stick to something a bit more boring and a bit more front wheel drive.

Well I can see the logic in that swanny, but from what I've heard above some of the comment surgest getting one just not a super fast skyline. I think someone said just a normal GTS or something? Concluding, if I get a skyline of any kind I asure you I will not be going anywhere over the speed limit, I would value it to much to put it or myself and others in any risks. Ask for the stupid shit well.....thats what my mates car is for .

Well, to answer your question - you can get a speed-limit to peggy back your ECU which controls max speed you can achieve - never seen anyone do this, but I think you can get it done a qualified Jap import mechanic. Will be very expensive though. Good luck.

I really like that idea, I've googled around a bit but can't find many that are like you describe. Any idea's anyone on where to get one of these? Maybe a link?

All of them came up when I Googled gps speed tracking sms and limited the results to Australia.

I'm not sure if they're tamper proof - I read about that system in a SMH or Daily Telegraph article ages ago.
