who has done what?

my pads/rotors are pretty rooted, what have people done, what was involved?

1- r33 gtst calipers all round, new rotors and rb74 pads. should bolt straight in?

2- r33 gtr brembos all round, new rotors and rb74 pads, gtr master cylender, everything just goes on? will it fit behind stockies?

I'm running R32 GTR brakes F+R with DBA 4000 series slotted rotors and Ferodo DS2500 pads. am using a Z32 master cylinder, and had hoses and lines for the front made up locally.

this setup cost me just over a grand all up,and was well worth it,considering the next step up (brembos) are easily double the price.

the R33 calliper sbolt straight on,but the hydraulics don't connect to them on either end. you'll need new hoses on the rear, and either source 4wd front hoses and lines from a wrecker,or make up some copper lines and custom hoses up front and bend these to suit, like I did.

I went for a similar set up, 32 GTR (or 33 gtst) brakes for the front, DBA4000 discs, bendix ultimates and RBF6000 fluid.

They pretty much bolt straight on....you can keep the standard front lines (bolt them into the caliper using a banjo bolt). The only issue is the stagea hubs are drilled for a M14 bolt but the GTR calipers use a M12 bolt. I am just using the M12 bolt (so its a bit loose in the hole, no movement thru the pedal of course)) but if you are worred you could put a sleeve over the M12 bolt, or drill and tap the gtr calipers to take a M14 bolt.

BTW option 2 is a pretty bad choice to me.

GTR brembos with old discs and pads about 1500. +300 for new discs +200 for new pads +100 for new fluid +200 for new brake lines.

Why not just buy G4 8 spots from Just Jap instead? Brand new and a much better set up for cheaper overall.

because what are they like quality-wise in comparison, and where else can you get pads from, and in what compounds?

what about rebuild kits if a seal goes,or you damage a bleeder?

they're the same reasons that I won't fit AP's or similar to a car I drive daily. it's not a good idea to use parts that have hard-to-source consumables. if you can't get pads at your local auto shop,or on a day's notice it's not a good idea.

brakes are one area I wouldn't take risks. brembos are proven. G4's aren't. and if a lot of just jap's chinese made stuff is anything to go by,I won't be giving them a go.

You're welcome to your opinion Justin, but I've run both the G4s and GTR Brembos on the same car - the G4s are far superior brakes.

And as for brembo seals being easy to get.....I have been waiting 12 weeks for a set from the local importer and they are going to cost me a fortune when (if?) they arrive

Pads for the G4s are easy to find, they take the AP 6 piston pad so there are a range of brands and compounds available.

for 880 i got new 325 mm 4000 series 6x6 wiper slot discs, to replace the stock 280 mm

ferrodo formula ts 2000 pads which r bigger than the stock ones and a bracket to move the caliper out

comes in kit form u get every thing u need and works well

and it works with all the nissan 5 stud range

the small pad in the pic is the stock one the bigger ones come with the kit

Duncan: I'm surprised a seal kit is taking that long to arrive, but fair enough. I've never had to wait more than a week for parts in the past.

at least the pads in the G4's are known, even if they're still uncommon. that makes it a bit easier.

KLR33: Who'd you get the offset kit from?

Justin...

I fitted R34 GTT turbo brakes front and rear including the r34 booster and master

Fronts-

Calipers and disks bolted striaght on, no mods 310mm disk on r34 (r33 are 297mm)

Used the stagea front brake lines and banjo bolt. Need to shorten banjo bolt approx 2-3mm, done in lathe, or you could mod the caliper by removing the metal seat so the banjo bott will not bottom out

Rear-

same size as R33, caliper and disk bolt straight up.

Used the r34 brake line both the metal line and the rubber hose, bolted straight up to body.

I also fitted the R34 booster and master as I bought everything as a package. Not sure if it made a difference, but they have a different part number, so maybe it suits better. ( note brembo fitted GTR's ie vspec 32's have a different booster to the non brembo cars)

Red caliper is a r34, which shows the metal seat, black caliper is a series 1 stagea

Note my car is series 2.

Wheels clearance, I have R34 gtr wheels, so no problems

Duncan I have a Brembo seal kit sitting on my shelf and I can get more of them about $80 delivered in about a week.

Shame your local guys having trouble getting them. Anyway im happy to let you have my set for what I paid. PM me.

For my 10 cents worth I would pick:

RDA rotors out of the group buy.

Ferodo pads DS2000 or 2500's (take your pick) - they are much better than the Rb74's from my experience.

Fluid is cheap - even the Motul RBF600 is $28 a 500ml bottle & is as good as you will get. More pedestrian stuff is half the price (if that)

Stay away from the Brembo calliper as fitted stock to the Nissans. It is really no better than the Sumitomo version you can get for much less money. The only gain is in rotor diameter.

Also, IMHO the DBA4000 series are a waste of money. Put simply, if you use them for their intended purpose they will crack due to insufficient internal cooling vanes & a bad slot design. So why pay over $300 a corner for that sort of nonsense. If you don't need to up spec the rotors, why pay that sort of money for something you don't need?

last March or April (yes, 2006) I bought AlexCims' front slotted rotors (brand new) and front/rear used maltech braided lines. they are getting fitted up today :laughing-smiley-014: Think they set me back $600 delivered ? cant recall.

FiNaLlY, anyway, FiNaLlY installed today (along with cam gear, all fluids flushed, new water pump - grrrrr, and a tune)

I use Bendix heavyduty pads at the rear with stnd rotors and Bendix advance pads for the front (150 delivered for all new pads). Using 2 bottles of Castrol super response dot4 brake fluid to bleed and flush.

I imagine when I pick up the Stagea from the dynotune tomorrow the brakes will be fine for my applications (fri/sat night AdelaideHills runs, weekend daily city traffic), although could be better. Obviously. But meh.

Looks like the most sensible thing to do would be to fit new RDA rotors all round, try out some Ferodo DS2000 or 2500's and some good fluid, and then decide what to do before it all wears out.

you can pay over $300 a corner if you like,I got mine for $220 each. trade rates. I'd only pay over $300 for project

Mu discs.

4000's have been more than fine for street use for me over the last 6mths I've had them on my wagon. why you'd be worried about track racing reliability on a stagea,I don't know. they're the last car you'd bother to take on the track.

    • Lucky man, who owns it in the family? Any pics?
    • The engine stuff is Greg Autism to the Max. I contacted Tony Mamo previously from AFR who went off to make his own company to further refine AFR heads. He is a wizard in US LS world. Pretty much the best person on earth who will sell you things he's done weird wizard magic to. The cam spec is not too different. I have a 232/234 .600/603 lift, 114LSA cam currently. The new one is 227/233 .638 .634. The 1.8 ratio roller rockers will effectively push this cam into the ~.670 range. These also get Mamo'ified to be drilled out and tapped to use a 10mm bolt over an 8mm for better stability. This is what lead to the cam being specced. The plan is to run it to 6800. (6600 currently). The Johnson lifters are to maintain proper lift at heavy use which is something the LS7's supposedly fail at and lose a bit of pressure, robbing you of lift at higher RPM. Hollow stem valves for better, well everything, Valve train control. I dunno. Hollow is better. The valves are also not on a standard valve angle. Compression ratio is going from 10.6 to 11.3. The cam is smaller, but also not really... The cam was specced when I generated a chart where I counted the frames of a lap video I had and noted how much of the time in % I spent at what RPM while on track at Sandown. The current cam/heads are a bit mismatched, the standard LS1 heads are the restriction to power, which is why everyone CNC's them to get a pretty solid improvement. Most of the difference between LS1->LS2->LS3 is really just better stock heads. The current cam is falling over about 600rpm earlier than it 'should' given the rest of my current setup. CNC'ing heads closes the gap with regards to heads. Aftermarket heads eliminate the gap and go further. The MMS heads go even further than that, and the heads I have in the box could quite easily be bolted to a 7.0 427ci or 454 and not be any restriction at all. Tony Mamo previously worked with AFR, designed new heads from scratch then eventually founded his own business. There he takes the AFR items and performs further wizardry, CNC'ing them and then manually porting the result. He also ports the FAST102 composite manifold: Before and after There's also an improved racing crank scraper and windage tray. Helps to keep oil in the pan. Supposedly gains 2% power. Tony also ports Melling oil pumps, so you get more oil pressure down low at idle, and the same as what you want up top thanks to a suitable relief spring. There's also the timing chain kit with a Torrington bearing to make sure the cam doesn't have any thrust. Yes I'll post a before and after when it all eventually goes together. It'll probably make 2kw more than a setup that would be $15,000 cheaper :p
    • Because the cars wheels are on blocks, you slide under the car.   Pretty much all the bolts you touched should have been put in, but not fully torque up.   Back them off a turn or two, and then tighten them up from under the car with the wheels sitting on the blocks holding car up in the air.
    • Yes. Imagine you have the car on the ground, and you mine away all the ground under and around it, except for the area directly under each individual wheel. That's exactly how it'd look, except the ground will be what ever you make the bit under each wheel from
    • Yes, if you set the "height" right so that it's basically where it would be when sitting on the wheel. It's actually exactly how I tighten bolts that need to be done that way. However....urethane bushes do NOT need to be done that way. The bush slides on both the inner and outer. It's only rubber bushes that are bonded to the outer that need to be clamped to the crush tube in the "home" position. And my car is so full of sphericals now that I have very few that I need to do properly and I sometimes forget and have to go back and fix it afterwards!
