Hold on a minute there, can you explain why is it the 911 GT3 not a super car?

1005big.jpg

-driven by Walter Röhrl himself.

Which is directly related to this

2060726.003.1L.jpg

"a capacity of 3.8-litres with two 30.3 millimetre air restrictors. With the mandatory air restrictors, the unit delivers 359kW/485bhp at 8,500rpm. Maximum torque increased to 435Nm. Top engine speed is reached at 9,000rpm."

Because the 911 GT3RS is not a 911 GT3RSR for starters. Related or not they do not have the same attributes period. Second to that, you would compare that to a Z-Tune, and the Z-Tune ain't no Super Car either. Porsche built the Carerra GT as it was one of the few high end car manufacturers that did not ever make a Super Car. That being, something new and entirely different from any other previous platform.... which rules out any 911.

Roy, your biased and taking the piss. Well done, the 32 goes hard but why this conversation is still trying to compare a horse to a nisan is kinda stupid.

Someone mentioned before that Japan asnt produced a true supercar..well, what exactly then is the Toyota GT-1?

And Nissan? The R390 Gt-1? Anyone who says that its not a bespoke chassis, blah blah blah is talking crapola.

Nissan and toyotas had to make road going versions of these cars as the rules implied this for lemans competition.

Those two cars would dust just about anything on the top 10 list...

So there are full-spec road legal versions of these going around? Anyway, this is a GT-1 class track car. It's another category again. If you want to go down that track then you would have to include the home grown V8 'Super Cars' with a mere 650 bhp.

Drugs? LOL, nope sleep deprivation from working farked up hours

:D

Huh, say what???? Porsche had never made a supercar? What do you call this beast then?

Well, a good looking one anyway. I forgot about that one.... probably because it's fugly! I do stand corrected though. Nice pick up.

Ahem...

1994-porsche-962.JPG

Dauer_Porsche_962_LM.jpg

Porsche 956 (late 1980's) and Porsche 962 (early 1990's)... Group C homologation editions, sold to the public (well... privateers who could afford them, but still "public") and road registered. Definitely Supercars right there.

So what was the build volume on those? Wasnt it somehting like 8? Definitely exclusive, farking fast, horn looking . So SUPERCAR!

Who was first with the Supercar. Ford, Lambo? Surely the GT40 was close to being the first? Or GTO Fuzz???? Whats considered the first supercar?

LOL...see the F430 in the background :P

ford_gt40.jpg

lol this happen in perth, the driver was having a few beers at the pub then he got into the car, some people @ the pub were egging him on so he drop it from the lights and hit the lights!

more money than brains because he was in Ferrari that week ordering another one :P

yeh i remember when that happened lol, the thread following the investigation and mobile phone pics of the guy being questioned by police after he tried to do a runner haha

BTW, I totally forgot about two very unique and important japanese built supercars, that are real supercars in the sense of exclusivity, rarity and construction/spec.

The Tommy Kaira ZZ and Tommy Kaira ZZ2

tommy_kaira_zz2.jpg

and also the Toyota 2000GT

1969_toyota_2000_gt.jpg

only 337 made... and more expensive even now than a Porsche 911 ever was :P

Because the 911 GT3RS is not a 911 GT3RSR for starters. Related or not they do not have the same attributes period. Second to that, you would compare that to a Z-Tune, and the Z-Tune ain't no Super Car either. Everyone has his/her own definitions of a supercar which is all subjective. It however should not be defined solely based on for example; if it has an exclusive bespoke chassis; or whether or not it was a derivative of a common platform. Supercar is an X factor thing. The bedroom poster quote is actually not too far from the truth. I would say its something a bit out of the ordinary with a definite character.

Below is a supercar classification list I found interesting.

"For me it's a car that takes things to the extreme which can't be seen as sensible.

Modern Absolute Supercars (last 20 years):

Murcielago, Enzo, F40, F50, XJ220, XJR15, F1, EB110, Veyron, 959, Carrera GT, GT, MC12, Zonda.

Past Supercars:

Daytona, Miura, GT40, 288GTO, Countach,

The Everyday Supercars:

Gallardo, 599GTB, 360CS, 575M, 911 Turbo, 911 GT3RS, Z06, Cerbera, F430, Skyline GTR, NSX.

Gallardo: It probably would be if it's bigger brother wasn't around.

360CS: It was built to be a track toy, it was derived from a lesser model and the Enzo existed.

575M: It was never supposed to be Ferrari's flagship and, for me, the engine's in the wrong place

996T: Quick as you like but far too practical and far too reliable. Relatively cheap, too.

GT3RS: See also: 360CS

Z06: It's the everyday supercar but it's not a Supercar.

Cerbera: For me it lacks the bloodline (yes, I know I included the Zonda) and they're even cheaper than a 996T.

F430: See 360CS.

A supercar is something that is pushing the boundaries of the technology of the time, or at least getting very close to the boundaries."

When I conjure thoughts of a what classifies as a 'Super Car', I personally think of; the epitome of design (external & mechanical) from that manufacturer for the time, exclusivity, raw power (500bhp+, depending on the era), limited run made, not an everyday car, is road legal, aerodynamic low profile, carries a big price tag & probably without a lot of luxuries to keep the weight down.

This debate has been an interesting insight into what everyone classifies a 'Super Car'. I still think it's mirky between what is a sports car, and what is a Super Car though.

Put it this way, if a Rex can be made to be as quick around a track than a GTR, would this also be thought of as a Super Car by some?

    • Coming home late at night and driving past the police is the only reason i need one haha And yeh, definitley needs a switch to quickly enable it, dont have time to be getting my phone, opening an app, waiting for it to update etc before being able to make the change
    • Because it is financially convenient for them lol. Why wouldn't they want to give you the lowest possible valuation for your car?
    • Yep. @Duncan also shannons they will rip you dry and will be probably limited on how much you can drive. Also keep in mind that you always have to have it garaged with Shannons, with enthusiasts as per their PDS you can have it 2 times per week on the driveway for example.
    • I had a generic 4" Varex rear box on my old V8, worked a treat for sneaking home late at night, it was as quite as stock when closed The car was "fairly" loud when open as it consisted of 1" 7/8 headers to 3" catted Y pipe, to 4" single, it did have a resonator in the mid pipe and only the Varex out the back I also hard wired in a Varex dash mount switch, as the key fob thing is a pain to use when driving I wouldn't recommend giving the beans when it is closed though as it creates a large restriction in the exhaust  It also can in very handy when pulled over for "random" breath tests or just cruising past the constabulary
    • Here is the before and after of the scraping/sanding of the IC pads on the tachometer board for the fix mentioned in this thread. And yes it worked fine after. Just a note if you change any components on the board the tach calibration can be wrong showing the wrong idle etc...only problem is once it is installed back in the cluster you can't get to it to adjust...ouch! My fix was to cut out the calibration pot (the blue one) from the board and run it with two wires to the fuse panel under the dash where I could adjust the idle calibration once everything was installed. And yes I soldered everything up again including the half soldered components either side of the IC in my photos
