Hey all,

Im upgrading a few things on my car, new pc, SEBC, Front mount, Twin dumps and highflow..

Im worried with all the flow and boost that ill need a Fuel pump or fuel cut defender to keep up with it all.

No im confused with the both of them, I assume the fuel cut defender will prevent fuel from cutting? and work with the stock pump?

and a aftermarket or gtr fuel pump will just drill fuel down the lines to make sure enough is being pumped?

If anyone could help out would be great.

btw ive read abit on pumps and if people suggest I get one rather than a FCD than im looking at Nismo, HKS and stock GTR one.

Anyone comment on my choices??

Thanks beforehand.

Nathaniel

Suggest you get a WALBRO pump, there about $160 delivered via express post from SLIDE, and are direct replacement of the standard.

GTR pump isn't a direct fit, but will flow 300rwkw if in good condition.

Fuel pump is always a good upgrade when increasing boost.

Sorry from all the testing ive seen on fuel pumps walbro is the worst as it does not flow at high rpm (not sure if that only applies to big kw)

Quiet a lot of high power cars (mid to high 200rwkw) running WALBRO's.

Maybe they weren't original WALBRO pumps?

The ones that SLIDE sell flow 255lph, and if I am not wrong thats more than a BOSCH 040?..

I cant back up my claim either, however someone high in the food chain did mention is on sau... forget who..

Anyway are the walbro loud? im pretty sure my mate has one on his wrx and it sounds like a freight train .. its either walbro or bosch??

Cant remember how loud the WALBRO's are , I'm ordering one tomorrow and will have it in by Friday so I can let you know then.

GTR pump is fair loud, thats whats I have in my car right now.

The BOSCH 040 is very loud, you can hear it from a while away.

might be bosch then, because I was in my car, 4 cars away windows closed and he had the ignition on (400kw wrx) and all I could hear was whining.. so yeah :P

Ok so what else ppl recommend then? Walbro everyone?

I put a walbro in last week. I bought it from slide, the same one abu is talking about. I rubber mounted mine so its not noisy. You can hear it, but its not loud at all. The exhaust note drowns out the sound.

The Mafia cleared up a few Q's for me here about a week ago about flow etc.

As for FCD and fuel pump. They're both totally different things that do totally different jobs. The fuel pump supplies fuel, the FCD is a AFM signal bender to prevent the ecu from going into panic mode.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Can't go wrong with a nismo pump. It'll support plenty of power. I've heard one before, It's not "quiet" but not loud either. Just be prepared to fork the $$ out for it.

The tomei and nismo pumps are the same item. Just different names.

Nismo and Tomei pump kits are supposed to be the same item from what i've heard with the Tomei being alot cheaper so get the Tomei if going for one of those 2.

If you going to fit it yourself, the above pumps are a sinch to install. Check the DIC thread on "easiest Fuel Pump upgrade ever"

Walbros and Bosches have some small adjustments to the bracket, and I've seen some wrapped in a sort of rubber sock to prevent the noise but check on the rubber as some can break down in fuel.

If you're getting a Power FC (you said a new PC????), forget the fuel cut defender.

Covers everything a FCD does, in fact the FCD is about the cheapest Air Fuel Computer around to fool the ECU, like someone else said before. Forget em, cheap and nasty upgrade. Either full Power FC (highest recommendation) or a SAFC or similar...or Greddy Emanage or any other full replacement ECU

:(

in my experiences walbro pumps in turbo cars are not reliable. they seem to drastically run out of flow as the fuel pressure rises (with boost). I personally wouldn't use one on any car I value. good fuel supply is one of the most important things to the life of an engine so bearing that in mind the price of a nismo pump is a wise investment.

What about BOSCH 040 pumps, how do they compare?

I am getting put off WALBRO the more I read about it. So many mixed responses and view that I don't know who to believe. Due to so much mixed repsonses though, it couldn't possibly worth it..

I am thinking about going BOSCH 040, how do they compare? Good reliable pump?

I'm not worried about installation, just the pump quality it self. I don't really want to spend $300+ for a TOMEI/NISMO.

well personally I wouldn't be skimping on my fuel pump. but it's your money and your choice. I'm still surprised that people such as your good self continue to reccomend walbro. I don't know if you have used one or not but the number of failures I have witnessed means I wouldn't ever buy one. bosch pumps well they have had a lot of bad press too with failures. some of that came from copy pumps being sold, and I think some was down to poor installation how much was actual poor quality pumps I don't know. but I do know this. I have never heard of one single nismo pump failure. granted there may not be as many out there, but still....

my car pushes 300hp at wheels and i have a walbro 255 lph fuel pump (using 550cc injectors) and its fine to me... i recently replaced it thinking it was faulty but found out after replacing it it was wiring... one thing to remember with the walbro fuel pumps they need more than 12v i think its 13.something with a relay to be running at full compacity, thats where people go wrong and shoot the walbro's down, also there are copys out there that arnt genuine (be aware)...

from my experience its a good replacement, and as said above you can get them for $160 delivered and are easy to install

make sure you get the right walbro pump for what you need as there are some different ones. you may need to seek pro advice.

oh and as far as sound goes. they prime a bit loud but cant hear it running under exhaust note... and give a nice note... noticed changing my walbro with the exact same part number it altered the note (dunno there... may have been because the filter is new and the other was a little grubby and with the newer filter it flows better)...

I have seen/been in a few cars running WALBRO pumps. One of those has been running a WALBRO for over 2 years with no issues or signs of failure. It is also making over 200rwkw, and has been for the period of time the fuel pump has been installed.

Also from what I have red in the forced induction section "turbo upgrades for RB20/25" many people are using WALBRO pumps and making well over 200rwkw.

However, I am reading mixed responses from people such as your self who say they have witnessed plenty of WALBRO failures, and then from others like 'THE MAFIA' who say WALBRO's are fine, I am running 300rwkw on one.

There is too much controversy for me to now agree/disagree that WALBRO's are good/bad now, but I am going off personal experience. I know now I will not be going with a WALBRO pump, as an item should not have so much mixed responses. It is either good or its not. It is telling me that either the quality of the pump is not consistent or it's just the luck of the draw, some fail some don't?

As for BOSCH 040, I have run 3 of them in 3 different cars with no issues but like you said, have also heard about them failing...

Now that you mention it, I haven't heard of a single TOMEI/NISMO pump failing, why? I don't know... However, it seems like they are doing something right.

All my recommendations/opinions are based on personal experience or from what I have read, so that is why I was recommending the WALBRO pump.

well like I said a lot of the reason you hear about walbro and bosch failures comes down to poor install. you will never get that with nismo or tomei pumps are they are 100% direct fit, even down to plugging into the existing wiring so you imediately elliminate the chance of installation related failures. but there are too many other cases for me to risk using one personally.

    • Oh and I lost my headlight washer jet cover!
    • Ok, so I got myself some X1 wheels really cheap to try out, they're a bit different and I like them but they're really narrow (18x8) they are available in staggered 18x8/9 also but really hard to find.  I kinda dig them, but not as much as the F10 19's I usually run, so these go into the wheel pile.   As I mentioned in another thread, I got a new exhaust. It's an off-the-shelf stainless one that fits OH-KAY. I don't love the tips size and how far they come out the back, I think I might cut the tips off and replace with some smaller (~3") ones that don't extend as far. It sounds really good though, I'm not sure if its just in my head but the car feels a little quicker, more responsive.    I fitted an eBay special front lip. Surprisingly it fit perfectly and all holes lined up. Its a little rickety but I haven't put any double sided tape on yet, I want to clean the front bar up where it has scraped the road a lot and fil in the number plate holes (or, get body coloured wrap to cover them - is this a thing?  I'm not sure if I'll leave it gloss or pain it matte. I really like it though, I don't particularly like the front bar without it, I don't really like the M-Sport and to get anything else is just too expensive. That said, I might need a new one now anyway as I dropped the car onto the jack after forgetting to put ramps under the front wheels. It bent a lot and while it did go back to normal after I got the car off the jack, I do fear I have not done it any favours.   Lastly, my headlights died. Different problems in each. They have gotten much dimmer over the past year or so, I put new (uber expensive) OSRAM bulbs in them but to no avail. One of them pointed at the ground and the other just kinda did its own thing with light working sometimes. Yeah, check this 18 year old BMW headlight wire. I reckon I know why they were stuffed.       BTW, the yellow and black is the power to the Xenons. Yikes. I hunted around an researched my options here. I would have loved to just get a replacement harness but not a thing. My car has adaptive headlights, that is they rotate left and right with the steering wheel. Good condition used adaptive xenons were over $700 each, non adaptive were around $400 each, but I couldn't help but think that they're all around 18 years old now, surely they'd have the same problems. So I looked at newer LCI headlights but they were even more expensive and I couldn't confirm that they'd be plug and play with lots of people having lots of opinions so not worth the risk.  I ended up getting brand new Chinese headlights from MARS. They're very close to OEM with only the angel eyes being a bit different. I didnt want crazy turn signals or sharp DRL's or anything. Not my bag.  They're not adaptive, I thought thats a feature I wouldn't really miss. So I coded that out.  The lights are awesome, they look so nice and they take so many years off the car. The angel eyes look great and the headlight brightness is ridiculous. I was so used to the old ones, I didn't realise just how bad they were. The new ones use the OEM bulbs, Xenon ballast and leveller motor which I was happier with. The only issue with them is that the rear cover is held on by SEVEN screws. This will be a nightmare to get to and open when I need to change bulbs.
    • Now that you mention it I can see those too. More subtle. The lighting and low resolution makes it hard to assess super well what's going on but what is visible is bad enough to pull the motor.
    • I feel like this is due an update
    • Yeah, I wasn't giving two f**ks for the ring running around the bore. I was looking at the vertical scratches running up and down across the hatch marks.
