hi guys, ive got an r34 using the standard 3 gauge holes, ive got a trust electronic boost and oil temp, should i either

1 get another water temp for the 3rd one or

2 get an air/fuel one and have another water temp in the glovebox, just to see the temp at the back of the engine

I'd get an oil pressure gauge..........

The best four gauges are Boost, water and oil temp and oil pressure.

Most skylines have factory oil pressure, even though there inaccurate it still gives an indication.

I'd personally get an Oil temperature gauge my self.

ok, if you already have boost, and oil temp then you need oil pressure.

the common air fuel guages using the stock sensor are about as useful as a screen door on a spaceship so forget that idea.

water temp is not so important either and if you have a Power FC it will display it anyway.

the most crucial gauges in order of importance are:

oil pressure

boost

oil temp

fuel pressure

water temp

ext temp

air fuel is not on this list as it doesn't even really rate as a gauge. more of a flashy thing to keep passengers occupied.

amen.....

i'm sooo selling mine at some stage in favour of using the space for fuel pressure

I disagree on the order of importance slightly. I'd put water temp higher up as it's easier to tell whats happening at a glance of an analogue meter rather than trying to read the pfc screen when the sun is on it and the cars bouncing around a track.

Boost goes lower on the list as it's just another gauge that bounces around. boost controller with peak protection and peak recall will do it. You don't need to see what boost it's making all the time. I look at mine maybe once in a session on the track just to make sure the peak is right, then don't look at it again.

Oil and water temp as well as oil pressure get checked once a lap. I'm giving serious consideration to installing a bigger oil pressure gauge with built in low pressure light next to my boost gauge on the a pillar and ditching the egt thats there atm.

yeh air fuel isnt really that important if the comp is tuned properly with correction maps set up huh, i mean cause if the engine leans out you'll probably know about it before you look at the gauge, now i just gotta find a water temp gauge, the boost and oil temp trust gauges ive got are discontinued now

actually that's not really true AFR is vitally important. but any gauge that uses the stock sensor can only tell your AFR between about 14:1 and 13:1 so it's absolutely useless for anything other than steady state crusing. if you are thinking about a wideband sensor and proper AFR display then sure go for it, but I'm pretty sure that's not what we are talking about here.

BHDAVE has some good points.

yes I rarely look at boost gauge now, but in the initial set-up and testing of the car it's very important.

oil pressure is most important by far. I have mine set to record for my first two laps at any track and I have a warning buzzer, and a big shift light type warning light for it.

water temp, I can see your point, but I found PFC is ok for me even on track, and if things start to go bad the stock idiot gauge will start to ramp up towards H around 100 degrees or so.

i was planning on just using the standard R34 oil pressure gauge, they should be pretty reliable shouldnt they, i know the r32 ones stuff up but the r34 is newer so should be ok

the standard oil pressure gauge is rubbish. if you are spending money on gauges then oil pressure should be one of those gauges. it's not so much that they are unreliable, but they are VERY slow to re-act and often a fair whack innacurate too.

yep - standard the oil pressure gauge did nothing for me at sandown, when my car was leaking oil like a mofo......I was told to get an oil pressure gauge for hte next track day....the tow truck lady asked if i was looking at the oil pressure gauge in the car, i said yes, but it was saying that everything was fine (but obviously it wasnt)......so yeah id probably go the oil pressure gauge.

What oil pressure gauge you running baron?

The man runs Defi's

One question - how much does it cost to have a wideband gauge installed? cos i want one installed in my 3325t

Its not really about "cost of install" there are some complexities.

There’s a lot of debate about the best units in the pro tuning world it seems. Iv heard first hand many deficiencies with less developed units like the Tech Edge, which don't cope with altitude change well, and are a little slow in response. If your really keen, at a minimum starting looking http://www.innovatemotorsports.com/products.php Look around though, you can pick up some good second hand deals. A mate picked up a LM1 for under $800. Tested response with $5000 unit; sensor still seemed fine.

You mention permanent install? Keep in mind the sensor needs a constant power supply to stop the pump cell from coking up.

Others use the setups from Haltech, Autronic etc, which I believe are rebadged LM-1’s and another who’s name evades me atm.

Gauge isn't going to help you with a oil leak :)
