What do you mean by 'Aussie-sourced parts'?

As in components made entirely in Australia? Don't think there are too many of them and they would cost nearly as much as Jap parts (i.e a catback from Hi-Tech or CES would cost the same as a JDM brand)

A guy over here in WA snapped a "Well known" CHINA tie rod at a drift day and the front wheel ended up going thru the firewall -

There are f**k all "local aussie" parts- there aussie companies distributing chinese made parts.

Depends on what parts. If by local aussie parts you mean Turbosmart, Plazmaman etc, they arent much cheaper than the Japanese parts and are also up there in terms of quality.

Ive tried some aussie parts which were substandard (I found King springs in my R33 werent that flash)

Most are great though whiteline would be an example of good parts.

I sill voted for Jap parts though as I have never had a bad experience with them, I put this down to the Japanese having more exposure to their own cars.

I would source Jap parts as first choice....as they have been tried and tested and also in most cases are made specifically to your make and model and best part is the bolt on mods are just tht..."straight bolt on" no messing around.

I don't see how this is in question... The japanese make the best parts for their cars and know how to get the best out of them...

half the garbage you get in japan comes out of chinese factories with poor quality standards... i'm not talking about big brands, but stuff sold and rocked by guys on the street in japan... like HICAS lock bars. Contrary to popular opinion most of the drifters (with small budgets) running around in japan don't have Tomei HICAS lock bars, they have the same cheap nasty $90 bar that's on ebay here. Same with some of the "drift style" bodykits coming to Australia as "omg wtf direct import from japan! wow".

As long as the quality is good, there's been a fair amound of R&D, and the prices are competitive I don't give a rats arse where it comes from.

Just because someone farts in Japan, it dosen't mean it'll smell of roses and lavenders. A shit product is a shit product regardless of where it comes from.

That said, there's easier acccess to better quality Japanese products.

If you need something from a brand that there are no Aussie distributors for, you could try Slidewize, Slide or performance-wise on these forums. Or you could use Nengun or greenline, etc.

I'll buy whatever works. I won't buy a Japanese part because its Japanese, but because its the best for my budget. Which is why my car has a mix of everything.

My exhaust is a mixture of Australian, American and Chinese. It all works, it all fits, makes the same power gain as JDM stuff, but costs about half the price. Pod filter is American.

My coilovers are Japanese, but only because I wanted EDFC. If I didn't have to drill through trim and metal to access my rear struts, I would have bought European suspension which tends to be far superior when it comes to streetable sports suspension. Swaybars are Australian, but then its really hard to get them wrong.

My bodykit is made in Taiwan and a copy of the JDM parts, and having compared it to the genuine article the fitment is only marginally worse. Neither would have fitted without modification, however, but at half the price and CF instead of fibreglass I'll live with it.

Rims are Japanese, but no-one makes lightweight forged aluminium wheels at a price to beat the Japanese.

Depends what the part is really, if it works just as well, and is a fraction of the price.. then i'll buy the Aussie/Chinese parts over the Jap parts any day.

Some things such as internals, turbos, wheels, brakes, suspension are best left to the Japs though!

Some fabricated Aussie parts are of amazing quality. Plenums, oil catch tanks, carbon fibre panels.

They are not cheaper than Jap parts though for the most part.

Some Chinese/Taiwanese parts are fine too especially when you consider half the people that are buying Japanese brand parts are really using items made in China or Taiwan and they don't know the difference. It's cost prohibitive for Japanese companies to manufacture everything in Japan.

maybe not aussie parts, but i did vote aussie ftw against most people. they way i took the question, was using, say, a garret turbo over HKS or Trust, its not aussie but it doesnt have that insane pricetag. i persoannly would source parts from other brands than jap, as they, like the europeans, tend to charge insane amounts of money for products that arent that much better than what you can get here at half the price ie garret vs HKS. if money was no object i would go for HKS, but other than that, garret all the way.

PS yes i know garret supply HKS, but you cant get HKS spec turbos from garret, and im pretty sure HKS get all the best sh*t, someone feel free to correct me on this

    • Hey all, not sure how active SAU is anymore but will ask away anyways. Just wanted to get some experience on the 2008 model GTR CBA model.  I've hit that age in my life (43) where I'm like fk it time to get my dream (midlife crisis) car. Looking at importing one in and seeing if these can be reliable if the main flaws are fixed up. Plan is to keep money aside to do the following straight off the bat to future proof it: * install a stage 1 rebuilt trans with all new bits and pieces.  * install a new Bellhousing from the later model GTRs. Or potentially an upgraded stronger version like MAD or ATR. Besides the above two things and typical maintenance items anything else you'd recommend doing.   Been speaking to a few people and the engine on these are very reliable apparently. But keen on the view of the community here. Hoping to find a nice grade 4.5 with low mileage in Grey. I'd go black but swirls too easy. Look forward to your responses and feedback. Cheers
    • Do Alan and Keith work on Skylines now? I remember buying stuff from them when I owned my Ralliart Lancer a few moons ago. Definitely genuine guys and be excellent if they dealt with the skyline platform as well.
    • Hey all, I'm Gaston from Sydney's West.  I was a member on here when I was a younger lad and owned a mint R33 GTS-T. Ended up selling it and getting married having kids (yadda yadda) we all know how the story goes. Now I'm back with the intention to get my midlife crisis (dream) car ... a R35 GTR.  You'll see me about asking questions and searching the forums. Good to be back and can't wait to get back an Import again.
