Hi,

I have been lurking here for a while now......

I have been wanting to get a Stagea for about 7 or 8 years and I am finally about to make the move.

I am looking at M35's but after hours on this thread and others I am a bit concerned about the turbo issue.

Are they guaranteed to go about 100,000km, or is it just a few that it happens to? And would an ARX4 be worse due to the higher boost?

As far as I can tell this is this case and the repair bill can be around $2k.

If anyone could clarify it would me much appreciated.

Mine now has 138000 on the clock and the standard turbo is working fine. I guess the issue is that you dont know how the car was treated in japan or if it was modified but then returned to stock before shipping over here.

It is a bit of an unknown but as mentioned if you budget enough for a replacement then what's the worry? Adding a couple grand extra is still cheaper than a PM35 and once replaced the turbo should never need replacing again.

Further, if you do spend nearer the $2k mark to replace the turbo, you will come out of it with a much better turbo than stock so its not all bad news :)

My turbo (NM35 ARX) was found to have chipped exhaust turbine and scoring inside the housing at 65,000km. Was still going fine and sounded normal - found while replacing dump pipe.

Kms on it seem genuine based on other wear and tear and was unmodded except joke mods like nismo badges, radiator cap and pedals.

Think there are many variables as mentioned by others that effect life expectancy including fake kms. Torque convertor failed at 65,000km under warranty which was interesting as it put the motor into a sort of limp mode.

So definitely buy through an import yard and get good extended warranty if you can.

Warranty probably wont be an option as I am currently looking at a private sale vehicle.

However I am getting my mechanic to do a thorough check over it so hopefully that will give me an idea of the general condition.

Not sure if you can determine the condition of the turbo without taking it out and inspecting it...even a dying turbo could sound normal

Turbo may be on it's way out (will sound odd - but they are quite loud from factory)

Transmission should be very smooth. There will be a little lag when changing gears which is normal. Check that the tiptronic works properly.

the trans should NOT grind at all, if it does it may have been serviced with incorrect fluid.

Rear Anchor Points can leak if not done properly during compliance (water damage is bad, mmmkay?)

There may be an oil leak from the passenger side rocker cover, check for oil stains on the heatshielding and the turbo (both directly below).

If there is, get the yard to change the rocker cover gasket (~$20 part from Nissan, but the intake manifold needs to come off)

i thought you have to change the whole rocker cover for us?

No, you are thinking of the oil leak into the rear passenger spark plug. If you have that, then yes you need to replace the whole rocker cover to stop it permanently.

I am talking about the common oil leak from the passenger rocker cover. There is a rubber seal that is easily purchased from Nissan that sits under the edges of the rocker cover (being rubber, it can become brittle and leak).

motors not out.. i have that sark plug leak issue, but its VERY minor..

dont think its worth fixing just yet. it doesnt even go through a/4 of a litre until i service the car next so ill wait till it becomes important i guess.

ohh dude thats a risk. seeing as you cant drive your car at the moment. now is the perfect time to do this

His leak is into the spark plug hole, other than silicone, what do you suggest? I don't think he can afford a new set of covers.

Hi Guys,

While checking out my engine (I got the car yesterday), I noticed that one of the hoses had been blanked off.

On the picture below from another car, it is the one with the red end.

Where should it be connected to ? Why would it have been disconnected ?

Hi, whitestag.

The hose with the red cable tie at the front of the plenum leads to the boost sensor for the dash display of Stageas with the single DIN 3 gauge pod above a single DIN stereo.

Being that yours is an AXIS, & I assume it has the Bose audio package; it doesn't have the gauge cluster, & therefore doesn't need the boost sensor. This sensor only supplies the dash gauge; not the ECU.

You could always use this barb to supply a dash mounted boost gauge if you wish to fit one.

    • As I implied in my post, I have NO idea what the were. But in case I didn't make it clear, the way they performed was brilliant; whatever the brand was. I think it was the compound that made the difference. And if they were Bendix, then sign me up, I want another set. I did drive down mount Ousley (just outside of the Gong) a few times, and they showed no untowards performance.   Its not the low dust that I am looking for NOW. At the time I needed low dust, but now I have no issues with dust but want the initial/early bite of the pads that were used. Yeah, the early cold squeal may of been due to a missing shim or such.  And to repeat, its not the low dust I am seeking, its the initial bite of the pads and increase in bite as  the warmed up during each breaking. As soon as I let off, I don't remember the breaks being extra sticky if I used them again soon after. But I also did not test that theory.   Thanks for the recommendation, But I would prefer to choose something specifically with the behaviour I described.   I assume that they didn't use the default compound off the shelf, as we discussed the dust issue at length. And the early squeal when cold, I have seen the sound is more of an issue with some pad compounds. Mostly ceramic, which also are said to produce less dust.
    • Well, in 2007 he must have been charging about $1800 an hour. He only looked at the car for 5 minutes. And another 4 to write the report wrong, and another minute to correct it. Mind you, this was for a car that was: Stock engine, fmic (hole in drivers guard), all alloy intake and custom air box, 3 inch turbo back exhaust, lowered, and a set of 17" Advans (255/40/17 rear and 235/45/17 front). It was nothing crazy. The blue slipper wanted the "hole in the guard" engineered. But that was because he got the shits that I wouldn't "relocate the battery from the boot, back to the factory position in the engine bay"... In an R33 GTST...     Also for emissions, E85, and don't go wild on timing. It's amazing how the closer you get ignition timing towards max torque, the last couple of degrees really throw NOx counts right up. And for the huge increase in emissions, it's only a small increase in torque.

    • I swear at my GKTech ones every time I have to take them apart and replace a spherical. But I wouldn't swap them for anything else. They absolutely slay every other option, at least in terms of how they actually work. You sure you don't want to live with bearings? I mean, they don't have "ball bearings". They are rod ends and sphericals throughout. Tough as nuts, even though I have found more than one way to wear them out.
    • From when I was looking at getting the 86 engineered for the turbo, the joint said to put in a few euro 5 or 6 cats, then tune the car on a nice clean E85 tune When I was looking at a turbo for the MX5, it was basically the same thing, a couple of cats and a nice clean tune Although, it will depend on the year of the Jeep IRT emmisions standards required, and what mods are done, especially if it has a newer engine installed that requires a higher Euro
