Fire Extinguisher

Hey,

I've just bought myself a Fire Extinguisher for the car, however I was just curious - where do you go to refill them, and roughly how much does it cost?

don't know how much it costs but you could try wormald. they test and refill if needed the ones at my work.

Last bill I saw was for a 10kg unit and that cost just on $90 to have refilled and that was a dry chemical one, red with the white band.

I think the little 1kg/2kg units are probablly cheaper just to buy a new one... As the cams approved ones are only $39 from auto shops...

i got my cams approved one from bunnings for $30 from memory, dont know about re-filling it, i have been lucky enough not to use it so far

Yeah I think at $30 or $40 they are hardlly worth refilling... Just buy a new one once you used the old one...

Hopefully you will never need it...

Yeah, seems cheaper just to buy a new one. I bought mine from Garden City for $35. It's just a 1.0KG unit, hopefully I'll never need it like you said Col.

But, who knows hey ..could save someone else's life with it or even my own so its there for safety ...and hey it doesn't look to bad either.

Its always good to have a fire extinguisher on hand when involved with motorsport. The guys I got mine from warned that the dry chemical will pack hard over time when installed in the car. Something to keep in mind.

Ah alright, thanks for that, roughly how much is over time though? Are we talking only months or a year?

I just had a look at the instructions from mine...

* Store vertically

* Shake contents once every 3 months to ensure contents do not settle

* Do not store in direct sun light

* Ensure bottle is not in damp position

* Ensure top of bottle does not impact (assuming this means dont hit the top of the bottle or you will be sorry)

* Ensure saftey pinis secure at all times when not in use

* Once the seal on the bottle has been broken, the bottle cannot be used again

* When bottle hs been dispenced please dispose of bottle as this bottle cannot be refilled

Thats about it, it also says on the instructions this bottle cannot be refilled... So there you go, I should have just read the instructions...

ahahah well i dont think mine will last that long it lives in the car is stored horiztonally and cops the sunlight

I assume the sun light thing is due to heat, as the bottle is under pressure 145psi to be exact then the heat would expand the contents.

Im sure the sunlight warning wont affect the use of the bottle in an emergency, it just might pop open on a hot day tho...

i work for chubb fire safety, let me know what extinguisher it is.. i can prob get a new one for cheaper than a refil.

..and summers almost here, what would be the best way to try and keep it cool though if you have one mounted in the car?

I reckon you would be pretty safe, ive never seen one go off before and seen heaps of them in cars...

It would take some pretty high temps to increase the pressure to make it explode... But i guess its possible...

The guy said to service it just belt the crap out of it with a rubber mallet. Keeps the power from compacting.
