Hey guys, long time browser of these forums and wondering if I could now get some help. The car is a 1994 r32 GTR.

Not so long ago my car began making this dreaded knocking sound that I have read about over and over again. I read many threads regarding the likelihood of this sound meaning the car had spun a bearing (or was in the midst of), listened to a couple .wav samples of spun bearings and the sound my car was making is exactly the same. The car was still running and would drive fine, however I stopped driving it. I had accepted that I had spun a bearing (and the money i was about to spend)

Anyway today i cut the belts off one by one to make sure and once I cut the alternator belt, the knocking sound seems to have disappeared.

Basically what I want to know is does this pretty much mean that my car IS NOT about to spin a bearing, or can the fact that there is no more load (?) on the balancer mean that it wont make that knocking sound.

ANY ENLIGHTENMENT/HELP APPRECIATED

Cheers

Dale

depends where the nocking noise is coming from it could be a number of things,

wheel bearing, Worn out uppercontrol arm bearings or thrust bearings.. take it to a mechanic and have them to have a listen.

sorry should have been more specific. the noise could be heard at idle and sounded like it was coming from the bottom of the engine, which rules out those possibilities...

well the clutch fan or bearing on the alternator *could* be shot. How long did you run it after removing the belt (make sure it doesn't run hot because water pump wont be running). if you give it a rev does the knocking come back (big end bearings get noisier with revs while mains are about the same loundess regardless of revs)

the sound only disappeared after i removed the alternator belt. when the sound was present it did increase with revs.

thanks
