anyway cut the story short, I went to Shanons, for extra $200, with only $400 excess (1000 for famous)..with all features that Famous can't provide and list on my policy,(which you wn't see anywhere from my famous policy), such as  

* Chose repairer,

* Life NCB protection

* $400 basic excess

more..

anyway, I believe Famous has better price, but for extra 200, I have piece of mind..

My Famous policy lets me choose my repairer. This may have changed since I got mine last year, so I will be reading my renewal very carefully.

Lifetime NCB protection - forget about it. Write off 3 cars or get them stolen and see if ANYONE will insure you, let alone let you keep your NCB.

My car is currently undergoing repairs, there was no confusion in regards to choosing my own repairer, so you should be right Jim.

Famous's approach during the ordeal has been above satisfactory, the only complaint I have had is that they could have had my car assessed a little quicker. With hassles of finging Jap parts, I just wish there was a rental car clause.

To all - ask Famous who the underwriter (insurance Co) is - its an unlicensensed offshore insurer. Good luck if you are involved in a third party prang with a Merc ie: limited funds in Aus to pay claims. For the extra $ go with an Aus based Co that have a door you can approach should you have a dispute.

Anyway - just for those who have read this, famous have been fantastic in regards to my GTR and my 180sx when I had that. They have been very supportive of the club and I am very thankful for that.

If anyone needs any information about Famous, let me know or post here as I have lots of information that they have sent me and if they continue to check these forums, they can answer also.  

Also, any negative comments towards Famous will be removed as they sponsor the club and not the forums.

I think you need to read up on how insurance companies work before you start speculating.

Is that right that famous don't insure you if you had a suspension in the last 3 years?

I just go ta call from famous after sending them a letter notifying them that i am waiting for a 6months suspension for speeding. Robyn i think it was told me that famous won't be able to cover me next year?

And i hear people here have had like 3-4 speeding fines and they are still covered. And this is my first offense in 3 years and they aint covering me no more. Isnt that a bit harsh?

I was expecting the premium to go up...so fair enuf..i did somethin wrong so i should pay..but no covering me at all...

fark...gonna try just cars now and see what they can come up with?

Anyone know what other insurance companies apart from famous and just cars in Sydney who will cover a 19 yr old wit 1 speeding fine/suspension?

JimX..if you are due to renew the policy, my suggestion is check the fine print; I had choice repair last year, however it does not list on paper, asked them they say it will cover automaticly, however I see nowhere in policy memtioned that it's covered..try shanons..

I've tried Shannons twice. I do know that they insure Skylines, but both times I called I seemed to get some bogun on the line who seemed more concerned with insuring Australian and American built hot rods and said they wouldn't insure my car. I guess I will just keep ringing until I get someone useful.

After another review of the various forums regarding insurance, it is sad to see that so many members who are considering getting insurance, or already have insurance through us, are still posting uninformed comments or continue to be mislead about certain aspects of our company. This thread is not here for us to sell our business, but more to state the facts about our company and answer the various questions you may have about Famous Insurance, or insurance in general.

Once again, here is some general information about famous insurance:

Established in 1982 initially insuring classic, vintage & veteran cars in WA

Started insuring imports in September 2002

The total value of all cars insured with us exceeds over $300 million dollars

In regards to claims, we have paid claims totaling $3 million dollars. The majority of these claims are single vehicle accidents, where people have lost controls in bends and hit trees, etc.

Heritage is the largest insurer of leaner driving school cars in Australia

Our premiums are flexible to move with marker forces. Famous runs a business, not a social club. Unfortunately we are unable to please every 20 year old who calls up for an insurance quote, nor can we refuse to take a business when we think the person would be an excellent risk, regardless of their age. Every client is different and we take everything into account including post codes, as well as the attitude of the client, etc

Our policy has choice of repairer as a standard benefit. NCB protection is also standard, as long as proof was sent at the time of application. If there was no proof received we are unable to show your NCB on renewal. It amazes us at famous that every 19/20 year old has 50% or maximum NCB when it takes five years of full comprehensive insurance in your own name to achieve this.

Famous has motor vehicle assesor's in every state so all claims are handled by local experienced people, and all claims are handled in the local office here in WA.

We have also found many of you are still concerned about our underwriter, Heritage motor vehicle insurance, so we have also included some information about them;

Famous Classic Car Insurance acts as an agent for Heitage motor vehicle insurance. As such famous must conduct its business the same as any other agent or broker under the Australian trades practices act, along with the New

Financial Service Reform Act.

Heritage is a fully registered authorised insurance company in the UK Channel Islands (Guersney), using the same insurance laws as the UK.

Just think, if there were no companies like Heritage, where would the competition be for the other insurers? On average Famous was deducting competitors premiums by $1000-$2000. Without Heritage, imported car owners would be back to paying $4000 or more for insurance. Heritage has driven the prices down, not up!

Famous Classic Car Insurance is considering taking legal action against any person who makes a defamatory comment on the skyline web forum. Most of the comments are coming from people who do not understand what an offshore insurer is, nor the fact that Heritage has a 100% reinsurance program through an Australian re-insurance company.

All that means nothing when you are proclaiming to be an Authorised Australian insurance dealer, registered in gernsey.

Then ASIC investigated to reveal you in fact are un-Authorised.

You as a company did not comply with the corporations act at the time most policies were taken out. Correct?

This will legally be deamed deceptive and missleading conduct under Corporations Law.

Smothline's posting shows the folly of not getting your facts right!

His/Her reply is a blatantly ill informed and ignorant opinion. He/She should read all the disclosure statements and the Offshore Declarations that can be found on all our paperwork. If he/she persists with this line, we will find out who he/she is and take legal action against him/her and the website.

    • Hey guys. I have a 400R on its way to Australia from Japan currently and have a few questions I’m hoping others may be able to help with.   Wondering if anyone here has had any luck getting the Sat nav unit to work in Australia!? Assuming the Stereo is as simple as a band expanded and tv won’t work?  Seeing as they’re based off a Q50 which is Aus delivered is there any way to link that system to the nav? Nav modules and head unit are different part numbers and appear slightly different at the rear with plug ins etc. can I put my xtrail sd card into the rv37 and will that convert the maps or update to Australian? Has anyone got any advice here?     also has anyone fitted the factory remote start and Security system once it’s landed in Australia? I put an enquirey to Nissan Japan in via a third party, and they suggested it needs a Nissan Japan dealers device to setup and couldn’t guarantee if one here could do it or not. They can supply and I can physically fit it but to setup I would need a dealers device. Any information here would be appreciated also. I’ve seen one here with it fitted already prior to leaving Japan at a dealer/inporter, so clearly passes compliance and works when fitted Japan and doesn’t need changing here.      also, does the tyre inflation sensors work here? Does anything change with them when the vehicle arrives? Where are they actually situated? I’ve read they have batteries and they need to changing at times and seems like resetting involves the nav system?    any help here would be appreciated and any other aust specific information to help would be great. Looking forward to see what the current generation skyline is like and eager to see how many of the gadgets can be utilised here.  Thanks in advance 
    • Do need to take it with a pinch of salt. One of the adapter failures, they clearly had setup issues with the flywheel.  One of the slipping ones I spoke to and it was pretty clear the throwout was riding, rather than fix, just swapped to a new clutch.    These clutches are being put in anything from 5k offroad 4x4 beaters, GR yaris, 500hp commodores to 1200hp barra monsters. Bound to be some issues in some of them when they are not a simple bolt in affair due to the changes in height.    There is a lot going on in this picture and unless I did the job myself no way to tell what really happened. 
    • I did this mod in 2019  You just have to modify the top bracket of the ABS/TC/Fuel Pump Control ECU so it sits more upright and closer to the back seat and run a good quality positive battery lead from the engine bay, the negative lead i just bolted down to the body in the boot.
