Hey,

Im building up a r32 gtr track road rally car.

I just want to know how much interior is needed to get it registered as a road vehicle.

At the moment it has no interior in it just a dash and i was not going to put any in it just the dash and door pannels with a roll cage.

Does any one know the rule on it i looked on vic roads site and it had nothing.

Can anyone help?

i think the main problem will be the cage, not the lack of interior.

as far as how much you need, i dont know of any rule regarding this, but i would say you dont really need any. maybe a speedo etc, and anything that covers sharp bits (for your safety). i've seen a few cars with completely stripped interiors, even with no door trims, and they were street driven cars, that doesnt mean they were legal of course.

maybe phone vicroads, although i cant see you getting a straight answer from them

I take it the car has no rego now?

If so then your in a pickle. You might have gotten away if you currently had rego... and just prayed you dont get pulled over :down:

You'll need everything that deems a car to be roadworthy on it.

All Seats/Belts - generally a harness wont pass, interior bits/trims, gearbox surrounds, under-dash parts to keep wires intact etc etc.

Basically i think you'll find almost all the interior will need to be in there. Ride height, washer/overflow bottle etc etc.

If you have a cage that doesnt allow rear entry seats, you also need to rego it as a 2-seater.

This requires a VASS Certificate (Engineers), as well as a Roadworthy Certificate as your changing the make up of the car from factory.

This will also apply to aftermarket seats and other parts. A VASS Engineer will go over the car quite hard as its his license at stake really, so he wont pass something that isnt upto the grade

If the cage isnt made to VicRoads specifications, then your basically stuffed as the VASS Engineer wont pass it i wouldn't imagine. :ermm:

THe car has no reg and hasnt been reg in aus yet so gotta start from the start.

Brought it as a shell and putting it back together with the parts of got at home.

I was going to leave the carpet and alike out but keep all the dash etc in it.

I believe you can remove things that do not contribute to either road worthiness or crash worthiness, but much of the interior does exactly that. For instance you will definitely need a working windscreen demister for example, but not a heater or airconditioning. The demister is a roadworthy item, the rest is for comfort. I believe the concept is, that the vehicle was originally crash tested with a crash dummy, and anything either added, or removed from the interior that could conceivably change the crash test results would not be allowed. Everything inside the car needs to be either made soft, or deliberately snap off rather than injure someone on contact. That is the theory as I understand it, anyway.

    • Just a follow-up on this topic. From what I can tell so far the rusty residue on the engine block might be unrelated to a coolant leak or maybe just older than anticipated. After driving it from the winter garage to my friend's garage I could not see any new traces of coolant leaking there, but I will test this properly once I was able to fully warm up the car and drive it for a bit. I think I can agree that the whole porous engine block stuff is kind of nonsense, but there is just a silly amount of true, false and half-true information on anything Skyline-related on the internet.
    • hrmmm , not mine , easter plans to pull engine not happening     
    • I removed the IACV, cleaned it and reinstalled.  I found a video on youtube that helped with the whole process, the guy then said the idle needed to be set, so the process was to get the vehicle up to operating temperature, unplug the TPS, set the idle screw in the IACV so the RPMs were around 600, then plug the TPS back in.  After I reinstalled the IACV, the car started (because, it was a cold start), once it warmed up, the car died, I adjusted the idle screw to see if that helped anything, it did not, I had to wait about 3-5 minutes, then the car would start back up. Only to shortly cut out, and only crank.  I loosened the TPS to see if adjusting that would do anything, and when I would rotate the sensor clockwise, there was a humming noise, but it would go away when I got the sensor in the horizontal position.  It only made the hum noise with the key on.  What do you guys think? 20250414_172604.mp4
    • Quick update.  The engine grounding strap was replaced, the engine is now happily running.  Tested the voltage drop before replacing the strap, was about 1.2ish volts down between engine to battery, chassis to battery. With the new grounding strap, pretty much no voltage drop at all.
