You could quieten the tweeters relative to the mids by adding a 1 or 2ohm resistor to each tweeter + output or increasing the values of the ones inside the crossover. Use 5 or 10 watt resistors.

This will make the mids relatively louder but won't fix the problem of the sound seeming to come from the nearest speaker. You would need to move the tweeters trying different positions and angles.
