well if its a 1989 R31 GTS-R RB20 and a 1989 R32 GTSt RB20 then yes, one is a NICS and the other is an ECCS.

Sorry to hijack!

But with regards from the red to silvertop... will the redtop ECU still talk to the silvertop enough to drive it? Im throwing a silvertop in the 200ZR this weekend but didn't even think about the difference between the NICS & ECCS! :(

Not quite sure, ask on the R31 forums or maybe someone on here with more knowledge on the older RB20's could tell you definitively. They could have different ECU pinouts and looms. I know the processors in the ECU's themselves are different as are the IO interface chipset... but they could have standardised input/output.

There is:

Red Top NICS (Early R31)

Red Top ECCS (Late R31)

Silver Top ECCS (R32)

I believe that they're all incompatible as far as ECU's go. I doubt even if the Red top ECCS ECU could work the Silver top properly (which I thought it couldn't), the NICS ECU definately couldn't. Besides from memory, the money to spend on getting the silvertop ECU you'll quickly save with the (far) better fuel economy.

The R31 forums are definately the place to get a definate answer though.
