Hey Russ - what times are you aiming for at QLR on say the National Circuit?

It seems the times there are pretty much on par with say a lap time of Sandown - so us Vics have a comparison to look at (look at V8 Super cars they qualify in the 1.10's at both tracks and looking at the Dutton results it seems that cars were doing the same laps times that did both tracks eg Matt Cherry did 1.19's at both).

Because it would be interesting for us to know how your times compare to someone like Marcov (R32 GTR) , JFK (R33 GTR) and Benno (R33 GTR). I'm pretty sure Marcov's best time at Sandown with RE55's was a 1.14.9. and the other 2 are I think in the 15's.

hey guys

hope to be at the track friday a bit before luch for the afternoon.

snowy - hoping for somewhere in the 1:16 region on the national at QR. (MID 1.17'S last time out, so we shall see)

i would have loved to have got back to wakefield as that is the track we wanted to test at, hoping for high 1:02 at wakefield.

anyone had any experience with AO48's, as nearly all the cars are on them at Tsukuba, ( i have heard they are worth a second a lap)

i need comments??

cheers russ

worst semi-comp I have used Russ. They were uber crap. They were definitely 1-2s a lap slower than the bridgestones. I understood a lot of the cars run the A048's over there for these comps becasue they get sponsorship to run them...

I have heard the new DZ03's are the go but I haven't used them to be able to fully comment. Otherwise I still think from all the ones I have used that the RE55's are the best to date. (A048's, A032's. R888's, DJ01's, DZ02's, RE540's and RE55's)

thanks snowy - i thought they were suppose to be crap too!! (was wondering why they use them, but that makes sense) i am trying the dunlop O3G's at the moment and think we will stick with them.

A holinger is coming!! but it's for that r34, went for a drive in an r33 with a holinger and ignition cut of the gear stick, it was amazing, really linear power.

russ

definately not the yoko a032r they are our control tyres and are slow and horrible (go off quickly)

the dz03 or re55 would be my choice, considering everything else you are doing you should pick up a few sets of super softs and just change during the day.

HPI did a artice on the Saurus GTR, they have 2 engines for it, a drag engine, and a track engine. I can't remember what each one is though, i'll have to get it out to look.

Saurus GTR circuit engine and other stuff:

OS Giken RB30 engine 780ps at 7800rpm

6-throttle setup

T88-33D

OS Giken sequential gearbox

Grex Alcon 6 pot front 4 pot rear brakes

Carbon bonet, frp front guards

Aircon, ABS and Power steering removed.

Boot mounted radiator

Welded in rollcage, spotwelded chasis

HKS torque split controler

Hope that helps

thanks again guys!

duncan thats not a bad idea, i cant seem to get a hold of O3G softs but will continue to try (if i cant get them before we go , i will get re55 softs over there)

i have been told that the nismo festival is the sunday before the race!! so i will be there for that, hopefully get to see the 2008 gtr!!

Update

Engine was started tonight!! sounds great!

car goes to CNJ torrow to have new middle section exhaust made to match new tomei down pipes, then back tomorrow night to finish off, start fitting decals and things.

also have to try and get new rear turbo oil feed pipe as it has a crack a the top fitting and is leaking(should have that sussed tomorrow)

wednesday thursday dyno time (after run in)

cheers russ

Hey Richard

nah the dumps the were cracked were on there when we bought the car! so atleast three years old and look like chinese copies of hks dumps. they were pretty ordinary dump pipes and i'm glad to get rid of them!

russ

yep, the tomei dumps are the best I've ever seen which is why I have set for my car. and I went for the twin 70m HKS front pipes to go with them. very nice quality and the pipes are welded to the flanges on the inside which gives a much nicer finish and no overhang. The HKS dumps (and the copies) are too small imo. sure split is a good idea but in practice you end up with two tiny pipes than then merge again after only a few inches and go to a 60mm outlet. not good.

Giant,

Are you still using the AAC valve and the air regulator on your engine?? If not, what do you use instead of them. thanks.

and which of the 2860 turbos are you using? the -7 or -5?

HI mate

The turbos are -5 , i think! GCG helped us out with these and put the black heat coating on them and changed the bearings to steel cages etc.

with other question is that the valves under the intake manifold? if so , all that has been removed, idles is low on cold start up but comes good in a few minutes.

cheers russ

Yes , we have changed from the n1's, will find out if thats a good thing soon enough.

we stayed 2.6ltr because we want to rev it, and feel this is a safer option in that area as piston speeds increase with lengthening the stroke. fine for drag and short work but not as nice on longer distance stuff, i was lucky enought to be able to speak to the tomei crank engineer for a little while about the cranks and set ups while i was in japan, which was very interesting.

cheers russ

    • It makes you wonder, all these people starting to make a billet replacement head, I wonder if any have thought about trying to adapt tech from newer engines into them. You're already at the full design stage to make a billet head... Why not really spice it up and had some more modern tech into the mix too...
    • Connect all the plumbing up properly. The actual worst part about having the turbo unable to actually build boost, is you can and likely would over soon the turbo if you drove the car (free rev while stationary isnt likely to manage it).   If you do have an air leak as Duncan suggested, you'll have a bad time as the AFM will be saying different to reality.   As you have had the engine out, I'd go over all electrical connections again. If you have a consult cable, plug it in, and see what the ECU thinks is going on. Did you touch the timing belt? If so, double check your timing on the gears is correct AND put a timing light on it while it's idling and see what ignition setting you have. Is the AFM you've installed the one that was in the car previously? You said you replaced seals, what seals exactly? What have you had apart?   From memory when I had my RB25DET with factory throttle, there was two plugs the TPS plug on the loom could go to. One would leave the car running like shit, the other made it work, I think one plug on the TPS area was for something else (an option). It's too many years since I saw that part of the loom to remember properly though.   Is the car idling smooth (as smooth as an RB can)? Does it smell fuelled up?   I have a feeling either timing in timing belt is off, or a sensor isn't right.
    • Theres still skid pan and motokhana days up in QLD at least that are $100 or less. The ones that are ran as "driver training" less so, they're expensive, but just normal skid pan days like SAU ran are still low cost. And thats one of the places I learned to be a lariken, purely by asking for passenger rides, and how people were doing crazy things. Reese gave me plenty of pointers back in the day for skid pan! And yes Duncan, I will never forget your pointers for track work. Especially after Neil got out saying "I am NEVER getting in the car with him again!" 😛
    • 49719 is the cooler loop. Right at the front, LHS of that diagram. Return line from rack (LP side) goes to cooler loop on RHS front of car, then back under engine and returns to bottom of tank. 49717M is feed from tank to pump. HP line out of pump is thick rubber, followed by the hard line that runs down to crossmember and runs in parallel (but opposite flow direction) to the LP return line. Nothing goes anywhere near the firewall or interior of car. The closest they get to that is the connections on the rack.
    • Thanks, plan is to drain all fluid tomorrow and do smoke test to find out the leak.   Appreciate your help and want to understand how the system work. So cooling is achieved by the long loop not any rad? The diagram seems to suggest it connects to somewhere inside the cabin and I thought that is a cooler inside firewall. If you look at the diagram it seems to show it connects to something inside firewall. I tried chasing it but not easy unless I take loads off   i am confident pump is good as fluid goes in and it gets soft( steering) but as soon as I turn engine off , loads of bubble come to surface and overflow. When engine is on , fluid level is below minimum but when off it shoots off and thinking it is sucking air in. I suspect aluminium pipe may have a crack line or whole   smoke test with no fluid should be a good start and if needed will remove the pump   In addition, the one going under the engine bay is high pressure line and one directly connecting from pump to resorvoir is return/ low pressure?   finally I searched and suggestion is to use dexron 2 but that is discontinued so bought dexron 3 as all research suggest it is compatible and shouldn’t cause any issues/ blow seals. I bought two liter of dexron 3 motul atf
