I think it does need a street class. only problem is everyone who is borderline wants to make sure they fit into street rather than race

think you're on the money there...

Both classes will be won by a select few $100,000+ GTRs so dont get too carried away about prizes. Just enjoy running your car and find someone about your mod level to have a bit of fun with :P

thus i conclude have 2 classes - one for gtr's and one for gtst's :P

see you on the track roy! :P>_<

Well hopefully Russ you'll get something down in print because Im building a Silvia at the moment to suit this format.

Also seeing it's looking like we'll be able to use Lakeside again late in 2008 I reckon with its twisty/challenging track layout that it would be perfect for the Qld rounds of the this particular Time-Attack series and perhaps an challenge could then be setup between the states.

Kind of a State of Origin except only Russell gets sweaty and wears short shorts...

It could be nice to have an interstate invite series.

Qld- Lakeside

NSW- Wakefield

Vic- Winton

+1 for Lakeside! Far more technical and challenging. It requires a far more all round performing car than QR, which is all about power and brakes. And would be much more worthy of the interstate trip for the southerners too - its an awesome track. Noise restrictions will be tight though.

I reckon Calder Park could be an option for the Vic track, as the lap times are close to 1min, everyone can strive for that sub 60sec lap :) Although the layout of the track is a little boring. On the plus side, being a AASA track, it doesn't limit the event to being governed by CAMS if the decision was made.

Calder looks more like a HP track, and the Club circuit at Winton is also a 1min approx track and looks more interesting. Tighter and more challenging plus its also a AASA track, being used by the AMRS which is a AASA event.

But, thats just my opinion.

i like it! yeah tying to nut some stuff out early new year.

we will need to run some big mufflers for lakside. but that would be awsome, will be cool to see a super quick silvia, basically what ever you want but must run semi's and standard firewall position , no space frame

hmm thats about it

:domokun: Yes it'll be semi slick shod mate. Priced them local, what a rip. I'll be bringing mine in from Japan instead.

No space-frames, no firewall mods. Just regular engineering and goodies.

Brakes off my race car, that sort of thing.

Out of curiosity Russ, do you know why the M-Speed GTR only runs 265 wide tyres? Surely it'd get better grip with 285 or wider tyres? Most time attack cars Ive seen have only 265s such as the HKS Evo

yeah mate from what i understand they can"t get super soft qualify tyres in sizes bigger than that. some cars were running 245 40 17 so they could run ao48 super soft one lap wonders,

really hurt our chances over there not being able to do the same!! oh well next hopefully( we would never have won, but could have top six it with a 57 lap, the car definately had the pace)

can you let me know, what sort of money for some semi's?, bloody dear as poison here

Chuck the mufflers/cat. not exactly a massive performance gain. I ran my GTR with and without cat and main mufflers - made alot of difference to the noise, but couldn't feel any noticeable power gain

now this i am unsure about, i ran my car with just the front pipe and from the first little stab on the gas i could notice there was a big difference,

to note, my track day exhaust consists of a 3.5inch two high flow veilside mufflers and no meow.

so that in itself is rather flowing and very non restrictive but if i had a little time i would make a side pipe

Russ, you're PM inbox is full mate

Want to PM me a different means of contact pls?

I just read that a 30year contract has been signed for Lakeside with a 10 year option. Lots of work to be done but it will be good to see racing there again even if it is controlled noise.

Paul, hook us up mate :)

Just get a street legal race going.

We need this street class for all those who dream of modding our street car up to race on the track while still keeping it legally registered on the street.

The problem is you can't even change the windscreen wiper blades (from OE) and be "legally registered". Non genuine mud flaps and you're illegal. For SEVS compliance the car has to have genuine OE brake pads. What's legal in Qld is not necessarily legal in Vic. My guess is every single car that turns up at these events would be illegal in some way/ways and would fail a roadworthy if the law was enforced 100%.

So where do you draw the line? That's the problem.

Let's try the shocks example (one I obviously know quite well)

1. Standard shocks, they would obviously be OK for Street Class. They would be mostly stuffed and hence quite dangerous for circuit work.

2. A used set set of Jap coil overs, are they OK for the Street Class? There are cheap, easy to get from heaps of import dismantlers.

3. Off the shelf Bilstein/Koni/KYB/Boge are they OK for the Street Class? Easy to buy, not expensive, replace the worn out standard stuff.

4. What about an SK modified set of Bilsteins, are they OK for the Street Class? A hundred and fifty or so sets sold, minor valving changes from #3

5. Same as #4 but with a coil over conversion. If #2 is OK then why shouldn't these be allowed for the Street Class?

6. A set of new Jap coil overs, same as in #2, just that they are brand new. Are they OK for the Street Class? They can cost up ot $4K for a set.

7. How about a set of quad adjustable, remote cannister Ohlins/Penskes/Proflex with Eibach springs, cost $12K or so. Are they OK for the Street Class?

And that's just shocks, what about ...........................

Cheers

Gary

street class,

bonnet free

front bumper free

all other body panels must be metal (no carbon doors etc allowed)

roll cage free

suspension must use standard pick-up points, but adjustable arms, aftermarket dampers etc are allowed

car must run ABS if fitted with ABS as standard

drivers seat is free

must have either standard passenger seat or an approved type (ie no home made alluminium 2kg seats)

brakes are free

engine must be same type as from the factory (intake, turbo, exhaust, ecu etc are free)

car must ran approved semi slick tyres (and maybe consider restricting size for each model like in CT and IP, only a bit more generous than their sizes)

maybe consider making it that car must have current road registration. but I'm not 100% sold on that.

The whole point of a street class is that its a street car, therefore registration is mandatory or its considered a race car.

It must therefore be able to be close enough to road legal to essentially pass a cursory police check (within reason)

Therefore having it sitting 50mm off the ground with no mufflers, lexan windows, drivers seat only and doors cut out to just a skin and no windows is not acceptable. The car would have to stand a chance of not being defected.

Its perfectly legal to have a car mod plated as a 2 seater, therefore 2 seats fitted would be the minimum and they'd also have to be seats that would stand a chance of not causing a defect, as mentioned prior. That is the only realistic means of governing it. If it doesnt meet these requirements, which are quite basic then it's race class.

Then among street class, and race class have a division of 2WD and AWD.

4 classes, easily governed requirements and less headaches for the people trying to run the days.

Remember that while you guys may want to make 1000 rules to ensure you can stop people trying to be faster then you, it all has to be governed on the day and if it gets too hard and political Russ and the other organisers may well just say its too mind-numbing and go back to living their own lives.

Having said all that, I don't care too much what happens in street class because I'm only interested in outright times

Whilst the silvia is registered I'll only enter race classification.

In my opinion, NO.

There is no way on gods green earth that rollcage is legal for proper registration.

For one, its a weld in cage and secondly side intrusion bars must not be above the height of the sides of the seats.

If it wasn't for the cage, I probably wouldn't have too much of an issue with it.

You can google all sorts of cars and ask all sorts of silly things about different cars.

There should be one rule of thumb, and that is would it stand a chance of genuine registration within reason.

If you have $12,000 suspension in your car, that wouldn't technically prevent the car being able to get a roadworthy certificate. Though realistically, coilovers using spherical bearings are illegal as these generally do not carry ADR compliance for road use.

When you get pulled over, if the first thing you think of is "my car's going to be defected and/or confiscated" then you're probably in Race Class

yeah agree. add no window replacement to street class, and must retain standard door trims. so yes let's make it current rego required.

also agree within the two classes you need RWD and AWD.

and personally I'm not too hung up either. Don't think I will be giving anyone a fright either in street class or outright. lol.

    • Yeah since those first 2 replies I actually went and put some 98 in it and tbf it's already doing much better than the 95 (which is weird and makes my inner tinfoil hat wearer think the 95 was a crap batch), getting 8ish around town. Again, wonder if it takes a while to stabilize if the fuel is changed a couple of times. I swear cars used to just either run "well" or "s**t* in my 20s, none of this fuel optimisation business haha
    • Any number of different ways. Have the coils draw sufficient current to provide contact wetting. Use different contacts in the switch, either by material or design, better suited to the low current drawn by a relay coil. Etc.
    • Hmm, how does the R34 manage to have headlight relays then without getting excessive carbon buildup on the headlight switch contacts?
    • Not R7R. Meant to type R&R, obviously enough.
    • Bugger "making it look stock". I put one conventional internally fused Hella relay behind each globe. I just pulled the plugs off the back of the globes and built new loom segments with male and female plug parts to match up to the original loom and the globe, and used the original power wires to each globe coming from the switch through the original loom plug to trigger the relays. Ran a big fat (also separately fused) power wire across the front of the car to feed all the relays. It's as ugly as f**k, but it is wedged down between the headlight and battery on the RHS and the airbox and headlight on the LHS, and no-one ever looks in my engine bay, and on the odd occasion that they do I simply give no f**ks for what they think. Fully reversible - not that you'd ever want to. For f**k's sake. It's a Skyline. They made million of the bloody things. We've been crashing them into roadside furniture for 30 years now. There is a negative side effect to putting relays on the headlights. The coil current is too little to properly clean the contacts in the switches and they get blacked up and you have to open them up every couple of years and clean them manually. I have 25 years of experience on this point.
