Oh and also i believe the Falcon is a good quality car. Why? Think of it, why rnt their any magna's or camrys or acccords, or even maximas as taxi's in Aus? 90% of the Taxi's are Falcon, and 10% is Commodore. Falcons I6 can do over a million km's without the need of an engine rebuilt. Those cars run 24/7, they only get bout 2-3 hours rest a day.

My old man used to own a cab and always bought falcons.

The word gets around pretty quick how good or bad the new vt's vx's are etc amongst the owners. Fords are the most reliable.

Funny thing is with the AU the powersteering pump would crap its self quite often. Apparently they ran the same pumps as the commodores and the commodores had that same problem.

I always thought the commodores were a little more fuel efficient BUT they just arn't as reliable. On average the V6 when a cab has trouble as soon as it starts hitting 200,000kays.

My old mans AU at the time didn't have any problems until 450,000. The first cab he had was a XD falcon with a 250 x flow.

That thing never had the head off it and it had done 900,000km's when he sold it. It was overheated once due to a stupid driver that kept driving when there was no water in it.

lol this is the funny part.

Cab drivers arn't to bring well... some of them.

Due to Uni I work part time in a servo and the other night the cab driver left the gas screwed on to the car and tried to drive off. lol.

Silly Arab man. I couldn't help but smile when he realised. :)

LOL some one here said they bet a XR6T with their Volvo wagon, which i find it interesting. My R33 Gtst is basically all stock with a 3" exhaust from turbo and a Apexi catback. I managed to pull 14.7 the best.. Now i guess ur Volvo wagon is even faster than my car? Coz a XR6T Auto does 14.2 and manuel 14.1 stock, their damn powerfull and got 185rwkw. The Auto Tremec is better, coz if your lookn to  modify your car later on, it can handle it quite well. U can get a Chip put in for $1200 from APS gets the car to 290kw... Now what have you done to your Volvo wagon to get it to do 13 seconds?

BTW, my r33 is manuel :)

Good thing you don't live in perth then isn't it.

this is the offender.

Just another point my freind. Magazine reviews of a cars 400m performance are not conducted at a real drag strip, as such they are a poor measure of the reality. I believe the best 'stock' XR6T time I have seen on a 'real' drag strip was mid 14's, with good traction.

I don't think it's so much that Fords are more reliable than Holdens just because of the manufacturer, I think it's just that the inline 6 engine design is better. I remember even into the early-mid 90's I would occasionally see an old HX or HZ Taxi. If the VL came out in a wide body then I think we would have been seeing more of these as taxis around for longer than subsequent Commodore models.

KDR33, as for the Volvo beating the XR6T, just because something is faster on paper doesn't mean it's faster in real life. If you let the engine bog or if you can't get traction, then a much slower car can beat you. That's why people actually race, not just compare figures and say "yeah ok, your car wins" :D

Speaking of Volvos, I know a guy whose dad had a twin turbo Volvo a few years ago (might still have it) and he would occasionally put slicks on it and hoon around the neighbourhood in the middle of the night. One time this guy borrowed the car and reversed out the driveway too fast, the turbos kicked in and he ended up mounting the gutter on the other side of the street :P

That is true JimX.. When Commodores brought out the VB to VL shape they really were to small for taxi's. This is why we saw so many of the XD's XF's etc..

The Inline 6 is a better design. More reliable, smoother.

My fiancee's VN commodore had a rebuild when it hit 200,000kays as it started getting really slow. When the motor was stripped down apparently it was ready to drop a valve.

Its now done 280kays and the thing vibrates like hell and sounds sick.

I think the person who did the rebuild should be shot.

the configuration of the cylinders has no bearing on an engines reliabilty. it is the quality of design and engineering, the ammount of development, and successful execution in production of each engine that will determine its reliability.

its probably more to the point that early australian and american engines were of a generally lower standard on a global scale that made them inferior. just a thought, im positive there are exceptions. but im sure you'll all agree that the 4 cylinder out of a Torana Sunbird was a bag of baboon balls.

Skylines were designed first and foremost as a sports car. Commos and Falcons were designed as family cars and have had performance forced upon them.

The only way to compare these 2 cars is straight line performance. Stock for stock I spose there would be very little difference. However, the "rice rocket" would do it more smoothly, efficiently, quietly, and with more class.

No they weren't, they were designed first and foremost as a family sedan. It's just that they happen to be the right size and shape to take the performance upgrade and 2 door treatment more readily than a Commodore or Falcon (ie, Skyline coupe weighs less than Skyline sedan, the opposite for Commodore).

The Skyline was never a sports car from the ground-up, not even the R34.

You gotta ask yourself why so many Commodore drivers end up driving Skylines. I used to drive a Commodore. It'll be a cold day in hell before I end up owning a Commodore again.

Falcons just are better packages for taxi's being good on LPG and with a tough live rear end.

Oh and the 33/34 is based on the Nissan "Laurel" floorplan/chassis which is a luxo sedan.

The only REAL sports based Skyline is the original R32 GT-R :D

T.

yeah the same engine will be used in alfa's and some other brand cars under the GM ownership, in different configurations (3.0, 3.6, 3.8L). estimated 200kw is pretty decent. wonder id they will turbo it to go head to head with the XR6T? that would make some serious power. would be a much better engine than the "new" gen 4 double pushrod :) engine that is supposed to be going in the VZ SS etc. still i don't think i will buy Oz again for a while......

    • I'd need to check my notes at work Duncan, but I'm pretty sure most of that is purely OBD2 on the display. How quickly is it all able to update? Do you have any internet capability in your workshop with a laptop?
    • Yeah just gonna be near stock runner only want 180kw to 210kw can’t find anything been looking ages looked in to rb25 but money is tight as the moment need the car back on the road
    • From there it is trickier. Ecutek seems to be one of those closed ecosystems where everyone password protects their tunes which means I either choose a tuner and can't change from them and can't make any changes myself for any reason, or I have to buy the tuning software (about $4k) and then get someone to tune from scratch (which is not simple with all the multi dimensional tables these days). Once you buy about 300 "flash points" per ECU you can get it tuned and add their "RaceROM" function which hacks extra functionality like launch control onto the ECU, and also makes extra data available for logging over CAN Not sure what I'll do there yet; I'm tempted to use one of the overseas shops that does billions of remote tunes of the platform instead of starting from scratch locally, a lot can be done online these days.
    • Can I log IAT eh? Well, can now So next thing was looking at data logging. Not straight forward because none of the motorsport displays have cracked the nissan/inifinti CAN and ECU based displays don't do g logging, lap timing, predictive laps etc.  So, I bought an Ecutek dongle from Tunehouse (Oz distributor). Even without a tune onboard that allows display and logging of about 50 parameters via Android (and presumably iOS) app. Approx 600 for the bluetooth + Usb version That gives me (pretty ugly but) functional dash display on Android And logging of these parameters I'll play around a bit over the break, but at least now I can make sure I have oil pressure when I get to some track testing.
