You dont see any Top Fueler drag cars running turbo's, cos supercharges or the best for those and turbo's are the best for RB's :D

My GF and i are heading off on friday arvo but won't be going to avalon till sat morning... gonna go to the NAB final friday night.

Yeah im heading of 5am friday morning. might go to the night show. will deff be at the sat and sunday show. I go every two years.

Honestly my fav thing to watch. I would rather see a jet fly over and showoff than any car/bike/boat known to man kind.

the sound and speed is very impressive.

My brother-in-law flew into Melbourne this morning and has a private 1 on 1 with the 2 Super Hornets tomorrow at Avalon, the lucky bugger!

been buzzed the past few weeks with F18 coming down the beachfront at about 1500ft around 400mph,, he comes by once a week lately.trying to catch him on film but he is so low I need to be on the beach,, the house between me and the beachfront blocks him when i look off my 2nd fl patio.comes cranking down the coast,, takes him like 30sec to get from KI to me,, fast as hell a real challenge to get on film when you hear him you have to run for camera but he is gone already..lol

I seriously can't wait... been hanging for years to go to Avalon. I only just got my r32 for track use and I've not even been out in it once yet to save the pennies to go this year.

However, will definately get the 32 out to the motokanas straight after that.

The guy who took me for my pilots licence flights used to do the fighter jet displays when the Grand Prix was still here in adelaide, I recall him saying something about glass houses and residing as a tutor shortly after.

They don't have to and i'm not saying that you should, but you can't expect CAPA to make a kit for skylines because the market would be tiny as there is a better cheaper alternative.

The flip side to not going down the same path as everyone else is that it will cost you big time because everything that you do has to be custom made and you are talking big $$$; hey i know as I'm running a CA which has pretty much no off the shelf support any more but then i have the advantage of having a CNC machine centre at my disposal.

i was hoping someone would bring up Top Fuelers.

The original reason they ran supercharges would have been off the line response as the turbos back in the day were laggier than there present day cousins, also there wasn't the electronic trickery that exists today (antilag and such) to help get them off the line.

The reason they aren't used now is because top fuelers are making close on 10,000HP these days and how laggy do you think a turbo that would support 10,000hp would be when a T51R only supports around 1000HP. That's like a turbo 10 times as big as a T51R (this isn't the whole truth though as Nitro-Methane produces oxygen as it burns so not all the oxygen for 10,000hp has to come from the induction).

Here's another interesting fact; the supercharger on a top fueler takes between 600HP and 800HP to drive (depending on gearing).

Some interesting Top Fuel dragster facts:

* One dragster's 500-inch Hemi makes more horsepower then the first 8

rows at Daytona

* Under full throttle, a dragster engine consumes 1 1/2 gallons of

nitro per second, the same rate of fuel consumption as a fully loaded

747 but with 4 times the energy volume.

* The supercharger takes more power to drive then a stock hemi makes.

* Even with nearly 3000 CFM of air being rammed in by the

supercharger on overdrive, the fuel mixture is compressed into nearly-

solid form before ignition. Cylinders run on the verge of hydraulic

lock.

* Dual magnetos apply 44 amps to each spark plug. This is the output

of an arc welder in each cylinder.

* At stoichiometric (exact) 1.7:1 air/fuel mixture (for nitro), the

flame front of nitromethane measures 7050 degrees F.

* Nitromethane burns yellow. The spectacular white flame seen above

the stacks at night is raw burning hydrogen, dissociated from

atmospheric water vapor by the searing exhaust gases.

* Spark plug electrodes are totally consumed during a pass. After 1/2

way, the engine is dieseling from compression-plus the glow of

exhaust valves at 1400 degrees F. The engine can only be shut down by

cutting of it's fuel flow.

* If spark momentarily fails early in the run, unburned nitro builds

up in those cylinders and then explodes with a force that can blow

cylinder heads off the block in pieces or blow the block in half.

* Dragsters twist the crank (torsionally) so far (20 degrees in the

big end of the track) that sometimes cam lobes are ground offset from

front to rear to re-phase the valve timing somewhere closer to

synchronization with the pistons.

* To exceed 300mph in 4.5 seconds dragsters must accelerate at an

average of over 4G's. But in reaching 200 mph well before 1/2 track,

launch acceleration is closer to 8G's.

* If all the equipment is paid off, the crew worked for free, and for

once NOTHING BLOWS UP, each run costs $1000.00 per second.

* Dragsters reach over 300 miles per hour before you have read this

sentence.

* Top Fuel Engines ONLY turn 540 revolutions from light to light!

* The redline is actually quite high at 9500rpm

* To give you an idea of this acceleration, the current TF dragster

elapsed time record is 4.477 seconds for the quarter mile. This means

that you could be coming across the starting line in your average

Lingenfelter powered "twin-turbo" Corvette at 200 mph (on a FLYING

START) and the dragster would BEAT you to the finish line FROM A DEAD

STOP in a quarter mile distance!

cara just dont put the super charger on and then decide turbo after or ill kill you :D decide n live with it

sorry for those that have done it but i think its a bit lame buying a n/a car and putting a turbo on it when they have a turbo model, why modify it when you can go out and buy the same damn thing for prob cheaper & more often better. the only time i would accept a fake as being kinda cool is the shelby cobra kit car, because lets face it who the f can afford the real 1 and then have the balls to risk damaging it on the race track

^^ valid point and 1 i would reccomend aswell normally but i think cara more into being different than trying to shave seconds off lap times n bang for buck

When you have F15 Eagles, F16 Falcons. F18 Super hornets from the US. and other military jets from aus its really worth it.

Not really into the slower planes. I respect them. but they arent a spectical. slow and sound bad.

Pretty obsessed with jets actually. every yeah Ill head down and watch the jets at clipsal. Even if im not going in that year.

Avalon = $50 to get in each day. Think of the fuel costs tho.

being in the US Navy and working with Lockheed martin space program I have seen some interesting aircraft. etc

all I can say :D if you know what I mean..lol

nothing like a booster rocket test in the dark,, huge fireball glow and so loud its unreal

but isn't the beauty of being common is that there are alot of manufacturers who produce alot of different parts you can try? eg a turbo is a good example! there are so many out there you can choose from! just because we all have the same motor doesn't mean they're all set up the same

you going roots type or centrifugal? im assuming the latter, youre still going to experience lag, granted, not the same amount as a turbocharged application, but its still there.

im going to direct the moderators to this; the WA wasteland.

im glad the moderators are more active in keeping the garbage out of the SA section, but one of the rather charming things about our humble little forum was the occasional random/non-car related thread, which we had a few of. so im thinking a dedicated wasteland sub forum like in WA would be good for us, sure its more work, but im sure someone would be more than happy to put their hand up to moderate the 'wasteland' sub forum, hell, id even raise my hand.

sure, we're all crazy car loving lunatics, but we do occasionally enjoy things that are non car related and want to share these thoughts with other SA members, but with the crackdown in the main section, none feel 'safe' to do this anymore.

Good for you. Do it. Do it your way. Too many people are scared to fail and will never be adventurous.

When I built my supercharged SR20DE 200B, I had everyone in the "industry" telling me it could be done ... two fold: can't fit an SR20 in a 200B and can't supercharge it. I love proving people wrong. I drove that car around for 2 years before I sold it, as it was, registered and inspected with the SR20De superhcarged.

I got the same reaction when I built my CA18DET vg30BB powered 1600 wagon, 13B powered Bluebird, and T25 turboed CBR1000 drag bike. All 4 times, proven them wrong and been happy with doing it my way.

I came to the conclusion long ago that there are sheep out there with no idea ... they only want you to do things their way. f**k it ... do it your way.

    • Because that’s not what any of them are building these heads or blocks for. It’s to hold over over 1000hp at the wheels without breaking and none of that stuff is required to make power

    • It makes you wonder, all these people starting to make a billet replacement head, I wonder if any have thought about trying to adapt tech from newer engines into them. You're already at the full design stage to make a billet head... Why not really spice it up and had some more modern tech into the mix too...
    • Connect all the plumbing up properly. The actual worst part about having the turbo unable to actually build boost, is you can and likely would over soon the turbo if you drove the car (free rev while stationary isnt likely to manage it).   If you do have an air leak as Duncan suggested, you'll have a bad time as the AFM will be saying different to reality.   As you have had the engine out, I'd go over all electrical connections again. If you have a consult cable, plug it in, and see what the ECU thinks is going on. Did you touch the timing belt? If so, double check your timing on the gears is correct AND put a timing light on it while it's idling and see what ignition setting you have. Is the AFM you've installed the one that was in the car previously? You said you replaced seals, what seals exactly? What have you had apart?   From memory when I had my RB25DET with factory throttle, there was two plugs the TPS plug on the loom could go to. One would leave the car running like shit, the other made it work, I think one plug on the TPS area was for something else (an option). It's too many years since I saw that part of the loom to remember properly though.   Is the car idling smooth (as smooth as an RB can)? Does it smell fuelled up?   I have a feeling either timing in timing belt is off, or a sensor isn't right.
    • Theres still skid pan and motokhana days up in QLD at least that are $100 or less. The ones that are ran as "driver training" less so, they're expensive, but just normal skid pan days like SAU ran are still low cost. And thats one of the places I learned to be a lariken, purely by asking for passenger rides, and how people were doing crazy things. Reese gave me plenty of pointers back in the day for skid pan! And yes Duncan, I will never forget your pointers for track work. Especially after Neil got out saying "I am NEVER getting in the car with him again!" 😛
