Being a bookeeper, numbers come natural to me. So the designing of houses and crunching numbers is just a new form of calculating = nerd :P

I was lost at bearers and joists.

So was I :D

They drum it into you hard enough. Things like this you need to know. Otherwise buildings fall down and people die ... pretty much.

For instance, my floors for my extension are made of timber, suspended over natural ground level. Now I need minimum 100mm clearance from ground to any timber member of the floor. If I use the narrowest timber, I could get away with meeting my existing floor level of 300mm above ground. Well I lose 100mm already from the clearance rule, so that leaves 200mm. Due to the length of my floor bearers of some 7.8m in continuous span, I need 190x45mm timber for my bearers. On top of that goes the 190x35mm floor joists. Well 100+190+190=480, which will be 180mm above my existing floor level of the existing building (not including the 22mm floor boards!). However, I can run the floor joists in single span (not continuous span) between (not on top of) the floor bearers = 100+190=290 which means it meets my current floor level. However, the single spans at (still) such a long span means I need to run them every 450mm, not 600mm to keep the 190x35 profile. Or 600mm at 190x45 profile.

So economically:

7.8m / 0.6 (600mm) = (13+1) 14 rows of joists

therefore 190x45 = 8,500 unit x 14 = 119,700

7.8m / 0.45 (450mm) = (17+1) 18 rows of joists

therefore 190x35 = 6,650 units x 18 = 119,700

Economically they will be identical in cost. So I might as well order more 190x45, rather than a bit of 190x35 and a bit of 190x45.

Lost yet??? And thats only the floor!!! I have to do this shit every week! :laugh:

similar thing happened about 4 or so years ago dave on 31 club, someone was debating that twin 2.5" pipes from a 3" would make it smaller. joel mac comes out with some epic maths and proves otherwise, sorta in the same fashion

Ruby those previous pages hurt my head :S...my dad(X-civil engineer and now government project/property valuer) designed and built our house and it hasnt fallen yet lol...its been 18 years standing haha... paving and shit u can do yourself or pay some guy from on here that knows how to do it lol... is homestart organizing person to build the house aswell??? oooh and can you pm me on around how much deposit it would be to get a house loan somebody!?!...that first homebuyer thing leaves soon ay

nissan or ryco, and motul 300V chrono. expensive shit, but its made of win.

or as mitch said, a greddy filter if you wanna show off how mad jdm tyte you are.

so...Im lucky enough to have fluked picking up an xbox 360 WITH HDMI port....

am i better off grabbing a HDMI dvd player with 1080p upscaling, or use the 360 with HDMI cable?

either way, im grabbing a cable off luke friday.
