whats the diff between a s14 sr20det and a s13 sr20det?

blacktop and red top?

They shouldn't be referred to as black top and red top. They should be referred to as VTC and non-VTC SR20's, the reason for this is because 180sx's after 1994 came out with SR20 that has a black rocker cover but is identical to the "Red Top" SR20's fitted to the S13's.

The main difference between the S13's and S14's is that the S14's came equipped with VTC (Variable Timing Control) and came with a bigger T28 as opposed to the T25G that the S13 and 180sx SR's came with. The other differences are a different intake manifold and a different oil filter thread than the earlier SR's.

The reason why you have to be careful how you refer to them is because there are a lot of people who have a later model SR20 from a 180sx thing that because they have a black rocker cover they have a "Black Top" SR20.

This doesn't cause a problem until they do a service, they ask for an oil filter for a "Black Top" SR20 and they get what they ask for which has a bigger thread than what is fitted to their engine (M20x1.5 as opposed to 3/4x16). The difference is only very slight (19.05mm Vs' 20mm) and the filter will fit on and tighten up but when it has pressure put on it it will come off. So people finish their service and go for a strap, as they get high in the revs (where the oil pressure is higher) the filter pops off dropping all the and dropping the main oil gallery pressure to 0. By the time they notice and clutch it it's too late and they have spun their bottom end; All because they called their engine a "Black Top".

Anyone seen the front page of todays Sunday paper (and the 4 page spread)? Doesn't bode well for car enthusiasts thats for sure.........

Some info here http://www.news.com.au/adelaidenow/story/0...5006301,00.html

why is it always commo wankers or young ppl that think they have to hamer through traffic every where to show how fast there shit box can be that causes the whole car seen to be called hoons.. most people with fast/modified cars cruise them when there out so we dont atract the attention of the cops but were fighting a loosing battle with idiots.. the cops are just gonna have to get harder on these so called hoons just to stop the public outcry.. they cant have ppl saying there doin nothing about it....

lol its amazing! underground car racing gangs!! wow is like organised crime! its like red faction! we should all hide in our houses where its safe...

sorry but the start of that media was abit rediculous.... way to general and it makes good safe(when used correctly) performance mods sound like demon spawn.. diddnt know on a regular basis up to 200 cars would meet up for organised racing and burnouts... ITS FAST AND FURIOUS LOCAL STYLE!

althought there were some bits of truth and some well stated comments its amazing how words can make anyone with a nice car look like a hoon to the general public

isee officer niel said he is working with responsable car clubs and named some but i see we didnt get named with them . well i guess the name skyline wasent thrown around either.

haha true no skylines.. i did appreciate that part of the article stating that it wasnt all bad... but i wouldnt have expected sau to be stated as one of the better clubs

    • Nope, but they are definitely one of the default choices. Well established.

    • Haha actually I did join back then under a different email address,  I couldn't re-activate my account so made a new one! I didn't post much anyway so not missing out on much. Amazing to see how the value of the cars and parts has changed over the years, also ACT section appears to be dead now.
    • Thanks... It's in pretty good condition overall, probably due to not being drifted/tuned however being a daily driver has taken its toll. Had 100k on the clock when I got it, up to 180k now. Unfortunately it's not 100% dent free, it's got a small dent on FLH side and broken indicator from where I hit a small kangaroo at high speed. If you look at closely at pic #5 you might spot the dodgy trailer light repair my old man and I rigged up as temporary repair! - It's still there due to a combo of needing the car as daily driver and then too lazy/busy to fix properly. I've a couple of other minor accidents accidents as well but nothing major. One required a new front bar and unfortunately the smash repairer ordered the normal gtst one and not the aero bar. Needed the car back asap so just went with it, regretted ever since.
    • I can't believe that anyone is foolish enough to believe that the base maps are for any other purpose than to drive the car up onto the trailer/truck or gently creep it to the dyno. No matter how good they are, they can never be any better than the factory maps**, and only the foolish trust those on a significantly modified setup. **Yeah, yeah. I know there's also the difference between factory maps being fixed to certain injector sizes and MAP/AFM/VE relationships, and the likely aftermarket ECU base maps being better able to handle the sorts of changes that would render a stock ECU dangerous, like different sized injectors. But let's just ignore that for the moment, because the principle is still the same.
