my god there is a lot of rubbish in this thread... V8SC are much quicker round bathurst, end of story... but they should be, they are race cars dressed up to look like road cars...

but yes the parity makes it boring... nothing like the old days but then the GTR killed all that fun didn't it;)

What I want to see is JGTC/Super GT cars versus V8 Supercars!

completely unfair to compare the 2 catagories...Super GT are allowed so much more than the restricted V8 series like in board shocks, carbon mono tubs etc etc etc

Too right! All you GTR lovers need to get your heads out of your a*** and look at the facts.

GTR slower - V8 faster. End of story.

As many people have said the race record means nothing as the safety car slows the race time down.

PS I love the Group A GTRs as much as anyone else.

correct 7 seconds per lap quicker which is a lot

which over 161 laps is close on 19 mins at the end of the race

The Carrera Cup cars are quicker to...around the mid to high 2:10 at bathurst...not bad for a N/A 400hp 2wd car...kinda puts the GTR's 2:14's into perspective...slow

The Advan team a few years back ran one of their JGTC/GT 500 Supras at Qld Raceway and it ran around the 1:02 sec/lap

How sure are you of this?

I mean I expect the GT500 cars to be faster but nearly 10 seconds faster than V8SCs?

Very sure...I helped do some of the data telemetry over the 2 days..... the faster guys on a good track and good conditions have done 1:09:5 in a V8 at QR....so yeah the Gt 500 Supra was every bit of 7 seconds quicker....so they should be with what they are allowed to run...inboard shocks , carbon everything and sequentional gearboxes etc etc

This thread is making my head hurt.

We are comparing a race car from 16 yrs ago to the extremely restricted race cars of today. The GTR's of old were serious bits of kit for the day however time has moved on and there is way more technology in a V8 race car than the R32 GTR race cars.

Do people not know that the V8 supercars are run to a very strict formula. They aren't given a clean sheet of paper to work from. Their engines are rev limited and the cars cannot weigh less than 1,350 from memory, two very important areas that will affect a lap time.

In addition they use a control tyre and when a control tyre is used there is no incentive for the manufacturer to make the fastest tyre possible. They will most likely supply something that they know is reliable, consistent and easy and cheap to make.

Are some people talking about road cars and others race cars? Do some people think that the supercars closely resemble the cars Holden and Ford make for the road??? If we are going to start talking about the new GTR don't forget that HSV could bring out the 7.0 ltr beast that's used in the top of the line Corvette.

In relation to the bathurst lap time when did they change the set up at the end of Conrod Straight, if after the GTR's day then it makes their lap times look even worse.

I don't mean to come across as a GTR basher as I love the car, it's just that I can't believe how one eyed people are about a certain car.

I'll stop my disjointed ramblings now.

hehehe this is such a hot topic at the moment...

Guys here is wat i think, firstly u cannot compare a 16 year old car to a 2007 race spec V8SC. i mean thats plain old ridiculous. The r32 GTR back in 1991 pumped out a massive 625HP which is a fair bit of grunt for a car back then. I mean if you were to compare a track R34GTR with similar restrictions to a V8 supercar and say make it rear wheel drive then this wud be fair grounds to go on. I mean the only way to compare 2 cars like this is to implement the same restrictions on both cars. Theres no point comparing a motorbike to a car true?? well the GTR was turbo'd, 4WD this alone already seperates the 2 types of cars.

Its true the current V8's have big $$$ spent on them, and in my opinion they are pretty crap for that kind of money. But to be honest wen restrictions are in place and control tyres, suspension, engine specs are in place, then u can only do so much to a car to improve times. I mean if u were to throw the old 32gtr back on the mountain, with the exact trim it had back in the 90's then i can pretty much assure u that skaife and richards will run at least 1-2 seconds quicker then they did back then. The main reason wud be the surface on the track and pure driver experience. Not to mention fuel quality etc...

The reason so much is spent on the V8s is one, its ultra competitve and teams with the cash will spend it to gain the extra 10th of a second, and racing componentry is massively expensive. Road car mods are cheap as chips compared to what a race team spends. The brakes, gearbox, and shocks in one of our V8 supercars is worth more than my whole modded 32GTR owes me (and its a lot). Id luv to write out a price list here to give peeps an idea but i wont....most of you would sht yourselfs at the costs and it would change you whole perspective on the cost of your road cars mods.

A more relevant comparison would be to compare the new GTR to other expensive road/race cars...id luv to see a 07 GTR in the GT champoinship next year to compare it to the Lambo's and Ferrari's and Porsche's...but I dont think that will happen any time soon

i don't know about that. 2 seconds (about 80m at the average speed of 155kmh the GTR did on a lap) is a hell of a long time to gain over just over 6kms. and experience doesn't mean that much. just look at mark winterbottom. he hasn't been racing for anywhere near as long as skaife and he beat him in the top 10 shootout, and went on to set the race lap record.

and the reason they cost so much is (as has been said) they spend big money on research to make stuff last longer, perform better, while still being legal. that is why they bring in control items. to cut down the costs. otherwise the team with the biggest budget will win.

and to the people saying that there are GTR's out there lapping within a few seconds ot the V8 supercars, ask them to do over 6 hours in it and see how it holds up. that is the thing. at bathurst the cars spend about 4 hours at 100% throttle (60% of a lap is spent at 100% which is rather low compared to some tracks)

v8sc = big dollars

just think about those quick change rotors the top teams had at bathurst

the R&D in that would be massive

They wernt as expensive as other components , just some very clever in house engineering from a few teams. But it depends what u call expensive... when teams are happy to pay 110k per engine its all relative hey. I dont think many peeps on this forum would even dream of spending 500K on a BF or VE plus factoring in 80-100K on top per round

i understand what u mean. My cousin used to race in the TOCA touring cars (forget the name in aus, it changed a few times) back in 1999 (when jim richards used to race the volvo), i was apart of his team, and man the parts were expensive, i can only imagine wat the V8SC teams pay for a weekend. I mean they eat up so many tyres and the tyres alone arent cheap.

i don't know about that. 2 seconds (about 80m at the average speed of 155kmh the GTR did on a lap) is a hell of a long time to gain over just over 6kms. and experience doesn't mean that much. just look at mark winterbottom. he hasn't been racing for anywhere near as long as skaife and he beat him in the top 10 shootout, and went on to set the race lap record.

to be honest i really think if u put it on the track again today it will beat its old time maybe not by much but i think it will by at least 1/2 a second.

If winterbottom is good throw him in the gtr see wat time he punches out lol

that is so very true and so hard to achieve!!
