not quite, if the remote dies and you cannot get it working again you are screwed..

that is why I prefer full alarms.

Silly question perhaps - I thought most (if not all?) alarms have overrides on them? As long as you have the key and can remember the generally obscure combination of buttons and actions (and recite an ancient latin text when the moon is blue etc etc... :) ) then you can at least get the car going until the remote is sorted out?

full alarm is easier to 'fix' when you destroy a remote key. the other way involves a trip to a dealer or in this case a email to japan to get a new key.

if you have two OE keys then upgrade is fine.

upgrades RELY on the OE remote key working. with out it no go.

Can anyone summarise for me, I am still a bit perplexed.

Can you have the car opening/disarming and starting using the original key fob only, or can you use an aftermarket system instead?

I would prefer to keep the original stuff locked away and use something that can easily be replaced... can you make them both work?

As for only one key, that is a killer, I need a spare ready to go, just in case!!

in summary:

OE key can be used to control an upgrade alarm

if the alarm used has a fob then the OE key must still be used to start the car.

the OE key has a transponder inside it that controls the NATS system. no OE key = no go. had a call on that today - fellow lost his keys and wanted to start his car with a blank copy - nup!

make more sense now?

Controller Area Network- ln laymans terms - take concept of the internet and squash it into your car. everything talks to everything else via a computer command. break the link and it all comes to a grinding halt..

I've got an Autowatch 446Prem (with integrated turbo timer) on my Z33 and, coming off the Brant, its a great piece of kit. Since I don't have my OEM fobs anymore I got Autowatch ones. I'm pretty sure the installer says they can integrate with the factory items (he also fits alarms onto V35s for compliancing).

Cheers Chris, so the OE Key has the door lock buttons on it, or are they seperate?

The OE Key is just a Key with a 'chip' in it that makes sures all the binary codes line up for the Starter to earth at the right time...

Simplistic of course, just like me...

no they are on it. exception is the red valet key.

So to completely clarify, the simplistic approach

  1. Is there an Aussie Key (Presume Nissan) that can be made to do all of the Standard Jap key functions, including open doors, engine start, open boot etc?
  2. What brand and model of Alarm can replace the Standard 'remote' functions listed above, along with the usual Alarm/Immobiliser functions?
  3. Do I have to have 2 black boxes on my Keyring (1 built in to the Key and 1 for the Alarm Remote of your choice)?
  4. Can I just have a basic key (Aussie Nissan with inbuilt transponder) and an alarm remote with boot release (depending on actuator installed on car)?

The reason I ask is, as a 'simple' man the only items on my Vehicles Key ring are a black box (alarm disable & central locking), Ignition Key (copied) to start car and a Siren silence key for hidden siren. Car will still not start tho.

I can't cope with heaps of stuff dangling from ignition or filling the pocket.
