Hey all.

Since an AHG track day it started with a light humming at 60-70kph.

Gradually got worse over the last 2 months.

Not a constant whine from start-up, but only around certain speeds NOT under load, and you can play with the noise by lightly pressing the accelarator at low speed

-More noticable when coasting or slowing down for corners.

-gradually has gotten higher pitched and more constant as the days go by.

-now, at a high speed it brakes into a unbearable high pitched whine.

W.A. Diff centre went for a lap in the car and in full confidence, assured me it will be the crown wheel and pinion in the rear diff.

Everyone else i speak to (without test driving) say that at 50,000kms this should not be the case and it should only be bearings. The GTR diff is very tough.

The crown and pinion is $1200 new ex japan but non refundable.

i dont want to go and do all the bearings and find out it was the crown;

i dont want to do the crown and find out it was just the bearings.

shed any light?

Wouldn't you have to trust a place that supposedly lives and breaths diffs?

First q - do you have oil in the diff?

You will know what is wrong when you strip the diff down to replace the bearings &/or CW&P. Or just go and get a changeover / SH unit.

i had the car major serviced 13,000km ago (who claimed to have done diff oil) with a new mob in welshpool.

it was around this time i noticed the noises.

since then i went to Xspeed who changed it again(8000kms ago), but mentioned it had the wrong colour oil in it, and it didnt looked changed in a long time as a lot of metal shards on the magnetic drain plug.

I think this might be the root of the prob.

I would hate to know of the price for a s/hand r34 gtr diff.

i think im going to just pull it apart with my bro this weekend and get some bearing numbers. try that first before getting crown wheel from japan.

start calling some wreckers/parts importers across Aus. also find someone with a trade account at nissan $1220 is crazy money for those bits. you could probably get someone in aus to make you one for less than that!

theres a place in malaga you should get to look at the diff, ring allfast torque converters and ask simon what his shop name is in malaga and go and talk to him. simon part owns allfast and this other workshop and knows his stuff, it might just be the bearings to tell if your c/w an pinion are noisy they will give a crap reading when you've put it back together then they should give you the choice of replacing it or not or if there is noticable damage to the unit they should also tell you
