Handbrake Issues

Ive recently purchased my 32 which has a few things needing doin to it which u can expect for a 15 or something year old car. Im having trouble with the handbrake, it works fine its just that i have trouble pulling it up and getting it to stick on if this makes sense? Ive got to yank it up a fair way and push the button in out and try to get it to stick. Ne one know what i need to do to fix this?

Probably needs a bit of WD40 sprayed around the ratchet teeth (near the pivot), and maybe up the inside of the handle (from the ratchet end).

They are Like elk said, spray some WD40 down the button or make sure the grip sleeve is as far down as possible because it sometimes catches on this, otherwise its been tightened way to tight i would say
