Hey guys, i'd like to know what i need to get my car sounding a little better than what i currently have, i bought a new pioneer headunit (mosfet 50wx4), and 4 6" pioneer 2 way speakers (rated at 160w), i thought my car wouldve sounded much better now, how wrong could i be!.

The car is lacking bass big time, i only really want 4 speakers and no sub, and kind of like the sound from my old mans factory 2000 ford au fairmont, which is what i was hoping to acheive, but its lacking the bass big time.what do i need to make it sound good without a sub, i know of cars without sounds that have semi ok bass, which is good enough for me.

also, my aerial goes up even when im playing cd's in my r33(not with the tuner active), this never used to happen, what couldve caused this???

NO SUBS?! YOU'RE CRAZY! I WON'T LISTEN TO THIS!

Anyway, sounds like you need to tune it properly... This can take some time and requires a fine ear...

Or just turn the bass up on the headunit/amp crossover... upon re-reading, buy an amp...

Or try getting some 6x9s in the back if you really don't want a sub (you're still crazy)...

Re ariel: You wired it up wrong, you gave it a 12V+ ACC line, there should be a better on that only turns on when the radio is selected... Did you follow the diagrams in the manual and stuff? How good are you with this kind of stuff? Should be a blue wire, perhaps with a white stripe i think...

You can get small subs, like 10 inch taht fit just about anywhere, or all in ones that can fit under the passanger seat... But either way, it sounds like you're on a massive budget of about zero dollars... so i would fiddle with the settings on the head unit if it has any... after that, amp the speakers...

as above yeah get an amp to power the speakers and you probably would have wanted to buy better speakers like some higher end alpine 3 ways or focals or something to get some bass out of 6" speakers. but yeah cheapest option would be to get a 10" sub and an amp to power it. ive got a 12" sony with a boss amp in my boot. total cost $300 it puts out bloody good bass for a $300 setup. so you should be able to get a nice cheap 10" setup that wont take up much boot space at all.

Sorry to say but you are going to find it very difficult to get the same amount of bass out of these pioneer speaker as you would from a sub, or even the factory speakers in your old mans fairmont. Size is everything.

The people that get good bass with out a sub spend lots of money to achieve this.

If space is an option the cheapest option for you would be to buy a good 10 inch sub in a box.

Which of course you do want this ON because running 4" speakers you would want them crossed over no lower than 160hz because the little pissy cone will not be able to create the amount of excursion needed to reproduce anything lower than that.

I have 6.5" splits in the front, which have lots of bass (Rainbow 265Kicks). But then again I probably set aside $500 just for the installation of front splits, which included dynamat both inside and outside door skins and dynaxorbs behind the drivers too.

You might get more bass out of a set of 6x9's in your parcel shelf?

Might be silly, but unplug one speaker while playing bassy music. If the bass increases, you may need to swap a positive and negative around on one of the speakers. They *may* be running out of phase with each other, thus cancelling each other out.

A very long shot, but i've seen this happen before.

Also check your headunit doesn't have something like a sub frequency cutoff on (SW on Alpine head units). Every time I reset my unit, or disconnect the car battery it automatically turns on the SW filter (shown as SW on the screen) and NO bass comes out of anything (even speakers it seems). I have to turn this off to get the sub going.

Fixxxer

Reason why you have no mid-bass is lack of sound deadening and quality speakers..

R33 doors are hollow!! theres nothing in them

Currently have hertz hsk splits and these have plenty of mid-bass.. just need to amp the speakers and it will sound even better..

But i understand what you mean, by that factory model ford.. Same as very other new model car.. Stock speakers sound great in them, with plenty of bass..

:(

If that is the size of the cross-over comparative to the speaker, then it's pretty damn big!

But otherwise, a fgood choice for nice, clear sound :)

Don't try and push too much bass through them though...

Another quick question, how the hell can we replace the speaker wire in the fronts?, cause if was to run my new splits to an amp, id like to buy some decent wirring, right now, im jst using the stock wiring.I cant see a hole around the door panel area where i could route the wiring into to get back inside the car, and run it down the side.....theres one near the edge of the door panel with a gromet(all the wiring going through), but its tight as hell, cant see anything getting through it!.

Whats the best way to run these speakers?, ive decided to just get good front splits(which should arrive fairly soon), is it worth running these splits off an amp if theyve got a built in crossover???,my new pioneer headdeck is 50wx4.

Not trying to pull a stupid amount of bass out of them, which i think you are going to do anyway...

That hole + coat hanger

buy a sub or some 6x9s or something... the front will put out good clarity, but it sounds like you are trying to pull bass out of small speakers...

thanks for all the help dude, ive had heaps of thoughts going through my mind for ages now, but ive decided on some decent front splits, and see how we go for the time being, without any additional speakers.....Im not going to run ridiculous amounts of bass through the splits (im not much of a bass junkie). Will a 6.5" speaker fit in the factory pod?, and if it does, how can i modify the pod for a bit more mid bass, i heard of diffusers do a good job?, where can i buy these though?

Mine didn't fit in the original front pods, but i can't remember if it was cause cause it was too deep or something else...

New pods had to be cut, just made them out of MDF... twas simple :whistling:

If you want a bit more bass, sound deaden the doors... 33 doors are damn empty and can sound like a rubbish can if not done properly...

Glad to hear that the "phase" suggestion helped a bit.

To be honest, my front speakers sound great in the doors... but to the point where the bass was rattling the window and other things (I went round and padded things, cable-tied, tightened bolts.. etc etc) So in the end, running the door speakers on mid-neutral and using a sub in the boot seemed like the best solution. I'm quite happy with my setup this way (which is the same way i've done in previous cars... I started out not wanting a sub when I got the Skyline)

Tweeter, mid, sub. Each do a specific job ;o)

Maybe this might not work and maybe u have already tried it,

Have u used the loud function on the pioneer? try changin it to the highest level. It makes the sound bassy'ish.

Cheers

    • Hey lads, reviving an old thread.  As an update, since the last time replied to this thread, ive done mostly suspension. Havent touched the motor except for maintenance. Though upon changing spark plugs, found out i had splitfires pre-installed! Updates: - Got me some stock airbox top cover and snorkel to fit onto the original intake. Should be free of defects - Bought a set of R34 GT-T brakes (not installed yet, going to rebuild + respray in champion blue + white 'Nissan' text) - Bought the last set of bilsteins from @Sydneykid and had them installed. Has been making some sounds on the rear but hopefully should be sorted out after this New Year break. - Regreased front caster rod bushings (poly bushes..) - Rear upper camber arms - Whiteline sway bars (BNF27Z 22mm + BNR11XXZ 24mm).  The rear sway bars are a bit short (ive read 50mm else where) but was still able to get them in.  Anyhows, I reckon suspension is sorted now. Maybe replace bushes (do have a set of front upper control arms from SK not installed yet) but should be okay for now. From now, I'm wanting to start working on the motor, drivetrain etc etc. Still debating on the order to go on and what to buy etc but: - ECU ( Haltech or Link ( Link states that it dont support A/T or AWD functions... Can anyone attest to this? ) - Highflow turbo ( ATR43ss2 ) - Intercooler ( Not decided yet, but cant find many good afoordable ones. Toshi says to opt for crossflow Japanese. Bit difficult this one, unless I get a returnflow Blitz from JJ? ) - Injectors ( Any recommendations ? I do have a nismo FPR ( Thanks SK ) ) - Seats - Tune by either Toshi or DVS To be fair, I did consider just keeping the stock turbo and nistuning it. Sat in a mates stock N, that had something like 200kw, and I reckon that felt more than enough. Maybe I should just go this route ahhaha. Too many choices.... Planning a trip down south, so wanting to just clean things up and make sure it gets to and from in one piece. Anything else specifically I should do before ? Cheers lads
    • Must be for the car’s lucky charm 🤷🏽‍♂️ She runs fine, but it just seems to take about 1L less. Maybe I’ll have the oil sump dropped at some point to check if there is anything
    • Hmmm interesting. Mine is the exact same and clearly the right one.  The mystery of the engine oil being full after 3.5-4L continues
