Camshafts And Cam Gears? Yes Or No?

Hey Everyone,

I’m after a spot of advice. I have a R34 GTT & I have been collecting a few bits and pieces for the next upgrade. I have recently bought the following to add onto the car:

-HKS GTRS Turbo

- 040 Bosch Fuel Pump

-Nismo 480cc Injectors

-Power Fc

As I have been collecting all these items I have figured....why not hold off a bit longer and get some camshafts and cam gears & get it installed all at once so I don’t have to pay for another tune if I decide to go ahead with the camshafts and cam gears later.

So I rung around and was told to get 260 degree with 9.15 lift for my car.

I’m after response more than power and I want the response to be there in the high rpms as well.

My questions are:

1.) Is it worth getting camshafts and adjustable cam gears? What are the advantages and disadvantages?

2.) Will I reach 250rwkws with these parts?

(My car is making 210 with a standard turbo, standard injectors etc. at the moment)

Any feedback will be much appreciated!

Flea

You should be able to reach 280kw + with cams and all supporting mods. Im aiming on theese cams too im not going to worry about cam gears as most of the time there set to 0 with pon cams if thats what your going to get but its up to you if you have cash to spend and want to try to get a few more kw you could always get some cam gears.

mate i was using a 2835pro s and getting 280 with cams jesus 280 + thats a big call! i had to change a lot more to get over 280 ... hmm hard to speculate depends on the tune....below 280

Cams: YES definately

Cam gears: absolutely you'd be nutz not to. Cam gears netted me another 15kw with proper adjusting on our dyno plus brought in the boost 500rpm earlier with no loss in the top end (gained 15kw)

Sure you get a gain with just cams but the cam gears will get you even more.

i had tomei poncams and HKS cam gears on my rb20

i posted in a thread with dyno graphs a while back but i've since sold the car and given the dyno graphs with it

i put them in purely for response. the car was auto and an rb20 and they don't go well together at low rpm. even though i was making 155rwkw-ish i put them in just to bring boost on earlier.

i made only about 5-10rwkw more at peak power but in the midrange i picked up >20rwkw in some areas. it basically shifted the whole power curve left. boost came on significantly earlier

expensive, but worth it i think for response

can't comment on peak power because it wasn;'t really affected

neo RB25?

i have seen numerous threads on neo's and no one seems to have definitively made more power with cam gears. it has moved the curve around a little but that's about it.

we tried and got more bottom end but significantly compromised the top end.

my R33 showed gains in the order you are describing.

Thanks to all of you for your replies.

Most people seem to be saying yes to the 260 degree camshafts & no to the cam gears.

If anyone else has got any advice or has 260 cams in their r34 gtt I'd love to hear from them!

260deg cams is correct choice for your car, with the GTRS and all the parts you've got its looking good to make 270rwkw! and you should be a happy chap! just do it.

Well after reading all of these posts looks like I'll be ordering some cams from Japan!

I've still got a few more parts to get, but once its all in and I get my dyno sheet I shall post it up

:thanks:
